At this point, why would they cut Posada? Rosters expand on September 1st, so they can phantom DL him until then, and sit him on the bench for the rest of the season, with a few farewell ABs. Sure he won't be happy about it, but that's the best way for him to save face.

Its a lose-lose no matter how you look at it. The alternative is to cut the guy, show a continued lack of loyalty to franchise players, Posada gives negative comments to the press, his teammates get pissed, and Montero's big day gets ruined by Posada commentary.

A continued lack of loyalty to franchise players? Are you projecting here? The Yankees baby the ever living s*** out of their franchise players and always keep them longer than they are useful. See Posada, Jeter, Williams, et al.

That is the national perception of the situation. Even though they've been given contracts well past their points of usefulness, between the Posada incident this year, and the Jeter contract dispute, the general opinion is becoming that the Yankees organization has not treated these guys all that well.

This move has to happen. Posada has been relegated to backup DH duty. Nunez is more explosive offensively, and he's a middle infielder. We have Jones and Chavez on the bench as well. Posada serves as our emergency catcher, well, when Montero comes up, Jorge will be our 4th catcher. He's been a great Yankee during a dynasty run and an integral part of 2009 as well. But he's almost 40 and the tools of ignorance have worn his body down to dust. He cannot run, he doesnt walk like he did, he isnt hitting for power, and his average has been wallowing of late in the .220 range. He cannot play a good 1b, he cannot catch, he cannot do anything. He's now been on the roster for 4 full months, and in 3 of those months, his OPS was at or below .641. There is no way around this, he doesnt deserve to be on the 25 man, especially when a guy like Montero is pushing from below.

Montero has had a really strange season thus far. His April was solid (.833OPS), but the power wasnt there (1HR) and he didnt walk in the entire month. He walked 19 times in May and June and hit 5HR, but his K rate was astronomical (25%), leading to OPS's of .747 and .667. Since July 1, though, the power and patience have returned. His line since July 1 is .296/.373/.527 for an OPS of an even .900. The kid is ready, Posada is dying, and we need a jolt for the stretch run. Montero's bat has been compared to Miguel Cabrera and he could have a similar impact a la 2003 when Cabrera came up and really bolstered the lineup. It's a win-win, IMO. You cut Posada and get it out of the way outright. He may bitch and moan and cry, but he'll be off the team and out of the way. In the meantime, the kid comes up as the emergency catcher but primary DH and you ease him in at the bottom of the order where Posada was hitting. If he hits, great. If he doesnt, you have Jones, Nunez and Chavez who could take his place for the post season. But this kid is a superior talent who, after 3 months of weird month to month transitions has put together a solid 40 day run akin to his career norms and it's time for him to get the chance. If he flops, you can option him without any trouble and you have big leaguers around him who can get the job done. If he doesnt, then you have a young, impact bat in your lineup

That's BS and you know it. It might be your general opinion, but I sense a significant amount of projection here. Significant amount. Cashman plays hardball with these guys as much as he can to try and limit cost, but we always seem to resign the players. The Posada incident was on him, not on the Yanks. How can you even try to spin it like that? Wow

How can I try to spin that? Cashmam held a press conference MID-GAME to throw Posada under the bus. The national perception is very clear on how it views these situations, read some articles from non-NY sources if you want clarification.

Once again, how can you justify such an opinion when the Yanks go out of their way to pay these guys long past their utility. And a Boston fan talking about loyalty, really? Theo has been the benchmark for smear campaigns and letting guys walk with good years left. I happen to like his way of business, but the Yanks should never be considered insulting to their former stars. Hell, Cashman went on record to let the public know that Posada's s*** wont be tolerated. How is that insulting when a guy begs out of the lineup because his PMS is flaring

I actually agreed with Jackson on this one up until he claimed that Theo smears players. I think the Yankees have been more than generous with Posada and Jeter's recent contracts. I think the only reason Jeter was displeased with the contract talks is because he's arrogant and live in a separate universe where he thought someone was willing to pay $20 million a year to sign him.

I am sorry, it isnt Theo, it's the machine. Before a player leaves the sox, there is always a smear campaign out there to pacify the fan base. It's been going on for a long time. Pedro's shoulder is hanging by a thread, Damon didnt give us a chance to negotiate, Lowe is a drunkard, etc. These all may be true, but the smear always comes out prior to the sox parting with a beloved player
Posted
I don't know where you're getting that from. The Red Sox front office never claimed that Lowe was a drunkard, even though it was common knowledge among fans who saw him making the rounds after every game. You can't have it both ways Jackson. You can't refer to the Yankees as respectful of their veteran players even though they've taken issues with Williams, Jeter and Posada public and then claim that the Red Sox are poster children for smear campgains run by "the machine" (whatever that is) because they've done the same thing to some of their parting veterans.

If there ever was a more perfect time for the Red Sox to run a smear campaign, it would be with Victor Martinez, who was being replaced by a player who-- at the time-- seemed like he was going to be a significantly big dropoff in production. And yet, he seems like one of the more loved guys to have moved on to other clubs.

Exactly. There were a lot of fans that were quite upset when he signed with Detroit but there wasn't a hit of a smear campgain or "the machine" :D

The Yankees have more class than the Sox. [/nutshell]

Shocking, I know. I mean, this point never gets made by Yankee fans.

Zzzzz.

I wonder if the Mets would consider a deal of Burnett for Santana with the Mets splitting the difference in salary. Both are under contract through 2013, but Burnett is owed only $37 mil and Santana is owed $49.5 mil. Santana has the shoulder injury to worry about and Burnett cannot seem to stay even keel enough to pitch in NY.

The Yankees just won't go away... This series is big for the Angels. They can make up some serious ground on the Yanks in the WC race.

Yankees are making the playoffs whether they get sweeped or not.

I'm not saying they won't, I'm saying the Angels can make it interesting. Besides we all know the Yankees will lose 3 out of 4 to the Rangers in the ALDS because of their pitching issues.
