I just heard a report that Martin is expected to sign with Yankees' date=' so yeah, Salty is likely going to be our starting catcher.[/quote']

I have only seen that on rotoworld. no where else. All other people say that it is still up in the air where he goes.

Completely fine by me.

I am going to just throw it out there, but by the trade deadline, I expect Varitek to be your starting catcher and the sox to be looking for some catching help. (Obviously, only if Martin signs elsewhere)

Does Salty get killed or something?

Well he was once one the the top prospects in baseball and more than held his own in his 22/23 year old seasons when it generally takes catchers a while to develop offensively. He has run into trouble since then but he's only 25 (Varitek for example never even had a plate appearance in the majors till Salty's age now) and has been sought after by the Red Sox for a number of years now. All that leads me to believe that the Red Sox do in fact see him as a starting catcher, and possibly an above-average one.

Or at the minor league level.

.823 career OPS in the minors while exhibiting around average D for a catcher.

I'm sorry, but should i bring a shovel? Because that's a lot of crap you're spewing.

Literally nothing in that post added any clarifying evidence to your statement...

I'm not going to waste my time proving that Jarrod Saltalamacchia is a below average catcher defensively, oh please.

The Yankee thing is speculation. Heard it on MLB.com. It's possible the Red Sox are backing off, since their priority is defense at catching, not hitting--at this point. Martin is iffy as a catcher, coming off a hip injury. Besides he probably wants too much money--in the $5-6 mil range, maybe why the Dodgers non-tendered him.

The Yankees' Montero looks very good and deserves a shot. He's a big kid like Salty, and a better hitter at this point--though RHd, which the Yankees don't like. Martin is a switch hitter, and could benefit hitting LHd in NY. They probably like that. But you don't know what you're getting with Martin as a catcher.

So is he penciled in as our starting catcher?

Epstein likes this guy. You know he will get every opportunity to succeed. He's still young and has upside if he can stay healthy.

He also had a mancrush on Lugo for a long time until Lugo actually started playing here.

With Martin, the grass isn't greener. Stay away.

Think he was referring to Salty.

Salty, of course. The Yankees are really throwing dice on Martin. The Red Sox wised up and backed off. Salty is enough of a gamble. The Yankees figure they can use him as a LHd DH.

It's after the fact now, but Martin wouldn't be getting $9 f***ing million a year for 4 years.

I thought the move from our standpoint wasnt bad since we have a few contingency plans. If he comes out blazing, then he gives us a very solid catcher. If he doesnt, then he's keeping the seat warm for Montero.

Russell Martin is a right-handed hitter.

Blazing? Not likely. He's in a 2 year slump and has a bad hip. He's a terrible contingency plan.

Me no read good...

In that case, I really hope Salty gets a real chance. Learning from Tek is a great opportunity for him and with this lineup, there'll be little to no pressure on him to produce right away. I just hope Beckett can learn to eventually pitch without his binkey.

Yeah, he will be the starting catcher for about a month.

His .181 Batting Average, Sub .300 OB%, lack of power, throwing balls into CF, boxing balls, inability to call a game, Passed balls will do him in.

We will be CLAMORING for Varitek to start and give us that .232 Batting average with a .293 OB%, limited power production and an arm which couldnt catch Cecil Fielder trying to steal second.

We need another option.

(I only used batting average in the post because they will be so horrible, its comedic to point out)

George Kottaras would look pretty good in a Sox uniform right now instead of, say, released for nothing on waivers to make room for the Jerry Hermida debacle.
