Head in sand

Stop pretending like you know exactly how this whole thing went down, who has what leverage, etc. because you really don't know. No one does.

Equating Werth with Gonzalez seems like a stretch. On one hand you have a 31 year old OF who's good but more of a #5/6 hitter than #3/#4 hitter. On the other hand you have a 28 year old superstar/franchise player. I have no doubt that it's possible Theo wanted both, but to say Werth signing forced the Red Sox hand doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

I think most were reacting to an erroneous report by Heyman, who said the deal was dead. That was his own opinion based on his source in the MLB office--that no deal or extension had been reported by 2 pm.

He jumped to conclusions. Rosenthal, with the same sources, retorted that the deal was not dead yet.

What ultimately transpired is a scenario predicted by Speier of WEEI, where the extension would wait until April 5th for luxury tax reasons.

You sure about that? Speier posted his article at 7:05 AM, Heyman questioning wasn't until about noon.

It's pretty obvious what happened based on the reports and the timeline of events. I'll go with Gammon's version of the events.

Except that your version is different than Gammons...

Not really.

Gammons never said that they were going to walk away and settle for signing Werth. You're reading into it too much.

:D So naive. You don't understand who you are trying to have a conversation with. You will learn with time ;)

Gonzalez had surgery on his non-throwing shoulder in October. He had his labrum cleaned out. This shouldnt be much of an issue as he doesnt throw with his right arm. The only thing he might have some difficulty doing initially is generating a lot of lift with his front shoulder, but after sufficient rehab, which he should get prior to ST, that should go away. So from a shoulder perspective, this should be a non issue

Can't really blame anyone for getting on Theo yesterday. There were a lot of reports saying the deal fell through. Being disappointed and upset is a natural reaction. No one should eat crow.

Everyone that threw him under the bus should have their fair share of crow. They took Heyman and a few others "reporters" word over The FO who remained quiet and didn't make any comments about the situation. And that is just ridiculous. Plain and simple.

I'd like to point out that (for once) I was on the optimistic side and I was one of the few that wasn't flipping out. I was laughing because I thought it was funny if the deal fell through and I defended the FO for not trading for Gonzalez if a long term deal wasn't reachable.

I figured I'd say it because I don't know if I'll ever get a chance to say it again. ;)

Heyman is usually accurate. We had no reason to think he was wrong. If the deal had fallen through, throwing Theo under the bus would have been justified.

No connection between the two. Heyman just reached the wrong conclusion.

Yes, but instead of being reasonable and waiting for things to get confirmed, everyone went and jumped off the nearest bridge.

How can anyone say that the FO was supposed to be taken seriously here. They didnt make a public announcement until today. All you had to go by was that the deal fell through. Then, all of a sudden, it didnt

Which, again, I say is a natural reaction when things look down. Besides, Werth had also just signed with the Nationals. Not only was he off the table, but his albatross of a contract would make it that much harder to sign Crawford. Things were really bleak for awhile yesterday.

Big talk from someone who will not back up his opinion.

WEEI's Rob Bradford is reporting that a source has confirmed that the Red Sox and their new All-Star first baseman have agreed to terms on a seven-year, $154 million contract extension

Beckham is overrated. And they have a very weak farm system, so it's not like the two other prospects were blue-chippers.

I can talk big, I wasn't one of the Chicken little's running around here yesterday like yourself. Seriously get off this whole bet deal, the odds where changed to overly express my opinion that signing Crawford would not happen and had become ridiculous to think of if he will take 8+/180M+ to sign him. Now I got you trying to get me into some loser has to retire WWE death match...

Tyler Flowers is still a good prospect. Beckham isnt overrated, he had one hell of a rookie season, the was hurt for most of last season. He is still a hell of a player and will probably blossom into a top notch IF in the near future. Not biting on that deal should make Padres fans a bit uneasy, especially since the guys the Pads got will likely be residing in AA or lower for the first half of 2011

And only a mere 24 hours after the mass suicide on this board all is well

And Jacko I told you it be less the Tex's deal.

$22 million per yr for 7 years. About standard for a player of his caliber. Now' date=' here is to hoping his surgically repaired shoulder gets infected and he needs an amputation :)[/quote']

I was counting down the seconds :lol:

Come on now a700. Personal attacks never bring anything good to the board, specially if they are directed against of a regular instead of a troll.

Padres wanted players that will be ready when the team is ready to compete, in about 2 years or so. They don't want players who are on the edge of leaving in 2-3 years (like Ellsbury). And Jed Hoyer knows the Sox system much better, so I think he knew (or thought he knew) what he was getting, and got what he was aiming for.

Here are my posts from slightly before 2 yesterday until about 4:45 when I broke for dinner. I made a lot of effort to stay positive at the beginning. I wasn't jumping off any bridges. When it was declared dead by numerous outlets, I vented a bit, but out of my 30 or so posts I only took about half a dozen vicious shots at the FO. Most of those came after the 4 o'clock hour when my blood sugar was crashing. I took a few good shots at the fanboys. Those were funny too. At the end I gathered myself and signed off with optimism. So, I don't know wtf you are talking about.

Practice what you preach.

Not attacking anyone. Just trying to make someone put their money where their mouth is. He told me he was a deadbeat by saying that he wouldn't pay up on the bet. That is the definition of a deadbeat. I take back the no balls comment. I was just trying to goad him into the bet. I like betting action. Can't help myself. I understand that most people don't have the spine to put themselves on the line with those things.
