Meh, you have that in common with Boston actually. A lot of shipbulilding money from New England was made on the hulls of slaver vessels. Isn't our proudest moment of course, but it's there, it's foolish to pretend it isn't.

On the other hand, Massachusetts (and by extension my home state of Maine which was at the time part of Massachusetts) was the first state in the Union to expressly outlaw black slavery so at least we have that going in our favor.

Not worth your comments on this mate.

(Unless this is some scouse far left humor?)

What? Savery is a major part of this city's past and shouldn't be brushed under the carpet like you're trying to do. None of us did it so we're not ashamed, it was the monied men that did all that they just used Liverpool as a port to route them through to trade for other goods. There is no black mark on Liverpool or it's people because of what the money men of the British Empire did.

And they used Boston as their shipyard, and a lot of their money went there as well. It's a fact, it happened. I don't think it belongs here though. History is what it is, fans are more interested in what's here right now.

So go start another thread on a non-sport forum mate.

This thread is about the Henry and NESV acquisition of Liverpool FC not the history of Boston or the USA or for that matter the British Empire.

Well, it is about a partial American recolonization of Britain through its sports teams, but yeah generally, point is taken.

Look, I don't know why you feel the need to get involved. It's this guys forum and he asked about Liverpool. I informed him truthfully about a bit he was not being told. Its more interesting than The Beatles.

Re: John Henry bids for Liverpool FC

6 October 2010

Liverpool’s potential new owners, New England Sports Ventures, have proposed buying Liverpool in a ?300m deal that will involve a cash injection of ?240m to clear most of the club’s debt, sportingintelligence can reveal. This should alleviate some concerns among fans that the club is heading for another leveraged buyout as NESV have confirmed they will sell their interest's in Baseball to start a soccer revolution in America tied up with The Premier Leagues 39th game idea mooted around previously. It is thought that the Premier League will sanction the sale on condition the Boston Red Sox are sold prior to NESV taking control at Liverpool Football Club.

As the sales process remains fluid – but complicated by legal action by Tom Hicks and George Gillett (more from earlier / plus some legal opinion) – we can also reveal:

•New England Sports Ventures (NESV), owners of the Boston Red Sox, were the preferred bidders of RBS bank, which was owed a large chunk of ?237m by Hicks / Gillett / Liverpool. The other “credible” bidder’s identity remains unconfirmed.

•The former Arsenal managing director, Keith Edelman, has been working on the deal as an advisor to RBS, but solely for his knowledge of football finance, and will have no role at Liverpool.

•NESV has promised ?240m in cash to wipe out the majority of the monies owed to RBS and Wachovia. This is cash, not borrowed money, and therefore not to be leveraged against any Liverpool assets, sources say.

•Some ?60m of debt will remain in the club (guaranteed by NESV), with approximately ?40m of that earmarked for stadium redevelopment, and ?20m for cashflow.

•The ?240m debt clearance plus assuming responsibility for the other ?60m gives the ?300m valuation for the deal.

•NESV has “an open mind” on whether it will build a new stadium. The Red Sox’s Fenway Park was redeveloped rather than the Sox being relocated, for example.

•Executives from NESV have already had at least one “clearance” meeting with the Premier League to discuss meeting “fit and proper” owners requirements, say sources Stateside. The Premier League is expected to release a statement later today to make the general point it is undertaking its own checks.

•Sportingintelligence understands NESV has already provided the Premier League with proof of funds and a sustainable business plan and the League should be able to “green light” the sale from its own point of view by Friday. 2pm update, UK time, statement from Premier League just dropped: “The Board of the Premier League has been kept fully informed of developments regarding the potential sale of Liverpool FC by the Chairman and senior Executives of the Club and has, accordingly, been made aware of a number of potential prospective owners in recent weeks. We can confirm that Liverpool FC has formally notified the Premier League of an intended change of control and that the Board has undertaken to complete all the necessary processes by Friday 8 October so that the sale of the Club can proceed.” Update ends

What is the source of this pal. Interesting if true

This is quite interesting. I'll do some research with a mate who is fairly tuned in. I vaguely recall something like this being mentioned quite recently but I didn't pay much attention at the time..

Actually I like the Beatles. And yeah, I'm a history buff so I was pretty much aware already about how much British shipping was involved in the slave trade but the occasional reminder doesn't hurt anything.

On the other hand it has rather little to do with the Red Sox or Liverpool FC so it is a digression, even if I did enjoy it.

Sporting Intelligence is a reputable site, they did well showing up Huang for being the con merchant he was. Broughton said at the time that bidders who were serious wouldn't be doing their talking in the press and that's how it came to pass. And to think, The Times ran that idiotic front page headline 'China Buys Liverpool'. Quite.

Hello, I am a football fan from Europe and I would like to remember the americans on this board who are unaware of Liverpool, that Liverpool is a big cancer.

They are the scum of football in Europe. They murdered 39 italian fans in Heysel. They also robbed corposes of their own fans during the Hillsborough tragedy.

And their fans and players are mostly knowns as the "deluded ones". They believe they are the best, when they lose its everyone and everything elses fault then theirs. Hell, they even blame all the referees to be corrupt.

Also I would like to mention that the sale has not gone through yet, so you could still protest against this and Henry might change his plans. We football fans would appreciate it. Do not bail out Liverpool, they are sinking at the moment and in 18th place which means they will be relegated at the end of the season.

Loads of history in Liverpool. During WW2 the longest battle 1939-45 was controlled from the underground bunker in Derby Square, Liverpool. Also the most heavily bombed area in terms of square mile was the Pier Head and buildings surrounding, even including London & other cities. When I was a kid there were wrecks all over the Mersey estuary, all the beaches were fortifide with gun emplacements, tank traps, pill boxes & barbed wire. The city got hammered and has never really been re-built. We paid a terrible price for freedom.

During WW2 we had the largest merchant navy, many registered in Liverpool. Anyone remember the famous shipping lines?

It's a horrible wet morning here in Cambridge, and the misery is compounded by the news that the RedSox are about to hop in to bed with 'the shite'. Ask fans of any other football (soccer) club, and to a man, they will tell you that liverpool fans are the most arrogant and deluded going. The kind of arrogance and delusion only equaled by yankees fans. The anti American vitriol is not limited to a few fringe nuts either.

This is bad news for the Sox. Henry would have been better served prying the Revs from the clutches of Kraft.

A very dark day!

With such brilliant English and cogent grasp of current events, how can we possibly fail to respect such an argument?

There are fandiots in every base. There are Red Sox fans who set cars on fire and tipped them over after the celebration in 2004. There were even a couple of people who professed to be fans who capped a Yankee fan because he wore the gear in the wrong part of town, the idiots. Hooliganry is less established in baseball than it is in soccer but it happens, and when it does, fans on both sides quickly recognize that it was the act of a small lunatic element and that their side is painted nearly as black by equivalent counterparts and move on.

OK I can understand why we're suddenly inundated with Liverpool fans since they might need information we have about Henry, and can share a perspective about their own team, but the only reason rival Britball fans would come here would be to troll the Liverpool fans, so I'm going to have to respectfully request that the rival fans keep their noise down. And please, both sides, Liverpool and non, quit poisoning the waters on each other in a neutral site, or we'll just get the impression that the lot of you are too far gone to be worth our time.

Thanks in advance.
