Gonzalez looks like he could be a sensation at fenway, he sounds up for the battle too

Where does that leave us with crawford?? Looks like it will be too expensive, hoping he'll not end up in NY

Jayson werth? What a deal he got himself, crawford in even better position now

I like Crawford's speed but with Ellsbury on staff we don't need it quite as badly. More speed is always better of course but I have no problem if Boston misses Crawford, especially if he winds up out West where he can't do us any harm. I actually look to SFG and LAA to dominate the latter half of the bidding as long as their GM's haven't already decided he's too rich for their blood. Besides, I think Kalish is ready to take the reins in a starting position and he's 5-tool potential where Crawford really isn't quite.

Cliff Lee and Strasburg... This team could be serious.

They where my Dark Horse team to sign him. Them throwing money at Werth signals they are willing to spend to become a contender. It might be enough to persuade Lee. Lee going to the Nats is best case scenario IMO.

I think if the Yankees don't get Lee, they will get Greinke, without question-- especially with reports of Pettite's retirement.

Won't Strasburg miss the entire 2011 season with Tommy John surgery?

This is the Nationals we're talking about.Bryce won't play in the majors next year either. They won't contend next year, no matter what they do, but that doesn't mean they're not serious, and starting to get people to the stadium will definitely help.

Yes, but mot teams plan for more then just one season. Lee and Straburg(if both are healthy) could be the 1-2 punch for 5 of the ext 6 seasons. It would also help take some pressure off of Strasburg.

The Nats have plenty of money and it looks like they want to spend it(they have wanted to spend for the last couple seasons, just couldn't get anyone to bite). They have the richest owner in sports from what I recall. They might be one teams that can possibly match or come close to a Yankees offer IMO. This could get interesting :D

The Nationals could be a NL spending force if they can attract the right FA's. Once the establish a good core, more FA's will be willing to play there. And they have deep deep pockets. NL East watch out if they get Lee :D

THe Nationals plainly would mean to be contenders in Y2 or Y3 of Lee's deal, not necessarily Y1.

Interesting to see them ramp up like this. Washington is not a small market, they might be able to sustain a decent sized payroll over the longish term.

Don't forget about a sleeper in Jordan Zimmermann, and they have a lot of high draft picks (including this draft) which if chosen wisely, can turn them into what the Rays have become. It might be even worse because the Nationals are proving that they are spending money in ways that the Rays aren't.

The Nationals saw something very interesting last season with Strasburg last season. Whenever he was pitching, the attendence records would shoot up by the thousands. Strasburg's ceiling is what Cliff Lee is-- an elite cy young pitcher. He'll bring fans in.

11:11am: Miller will be at the Winter Meetings in person this afternoon to meet with teams, including the Red Sox, tweets ESPN's Gordon Edes.
Why did we trade to get this guy?

I know who we traded' date=' but why did we make the trade? He was non-tendered. So what do the Sox get out of that trade?[/quote']

Taylor Buholz was non tendered as well. Not exactly sure why they made the trade. But there is most certainly a reason. Whether we learn about it or not is unknown.

Also, I don't do this often, this is probably the 3rd time since I have been part of the board. But I sent an e-mail to my friend that works in the Nats FO(He's no one of note, fairly low on the ladder, but in the FO operations non the less) and his response to my question about Lee was " believe the hype, they are really trying to land Lee". This doesn't mean they will sign him by any means, but their interest is real and not just kicking the tires IMO. Take it how you want :D

And he wouldn't respond to my Willingham to Boston theory

If the Sox don't sign him, I can't see any possible reason for the trade.

Ya I know me neither :dunno: I guess maybe something to do with the 40 man roster and/or rule 5 draft. Maybe it was less expensive to cut him instead of the guy they traded for him. It is odd.

Lee has at least one seven-year offer for $20-25MM - not from the Nationals - tweets Heyman.

Wow, that's got to be the Yankees right?

I believe they are trying to sign both Miller and Buchholz to minor league deals, or for less money.

Yankees would go 7 years, not 8. I think I read that the Rangers were going to offer 4 years, then realized there was NWIH they could get him for 4; and also that Cliff Lee would return to the Rangers if they offered him 6 years.

I don't think so. According to the MLB trade rumors site, it wasn't the Yankees that offered Lee the 7th year. It also says that the Nats didn't make the offer either.:dunno:

Although Lee is a hell of a pitcher, you'd have to be on crack to give Lee a 7th year when he's in his 30s already. And as much as I hate Cashman and the Yanks, they can't be that stupid or desperate. Quite the predicament....

If the Nats asking price for Willingham doesn't come down, and a few other things don't align, would Matt Diaz be a decent option for LF next season? I mean he's at least average right? And really they could get by with average. He probably won't cost much and if he doesn't pan out thy could add someone at the deadline for an offensive boost. There is always a few good OF's that can be had at the TDL.

Heyman also says that's not the Yankees.

Ok so, not the Yanks, Nats and the Rangers started at 4. There appears to be a dark horse candidate in the running.
