Cahill 148.2 ip, 2.54 era, .99 whip.

Hernandez 197.0 ip, 2.51 era, 1.13 whip

These guys are pretty much in the race too.

if king felix wasn't playing on the m's he'd be the frontrunner but i don't think anyone's ever won the cy young with a losing record

The problem is... he's pitched far and beyond better than anyone else. 1st in IP, 2nd in ERA, 2nd in strikeouts, 4th in whip. No one else really is even close right now. And sure, he only has 9 wins... but he has a ridiculous 89% quality start percentage, and leads the league with 24. Normally I defend the win statistic, but Felix has been violated by his team this year.

if i had a vote, i would vote for felix at this point in the season. my point was that i don't see him having a realistic shot with the real voters because they don't vote for people with losing records

another shutout for clay. he's probably moved ahead of price in the voting

buchholz - 139.1 ip, 15-5, 2.26 era, 1.20 whip

price - 157.2, 15-5, 2.97 era, 1.26 whip

Exactly. Wins and winning teams have been the two prevailing themes here. King Felix is pitching out of his mind, but he isnt far and away better than anyone like Greinke was last yr. His lack of wins and his playing on a horrible team is going to hurt him massively

Greinke had a winning record last season despite playing for a horrible team. Buchholtz performance today could go a long way in the Cy young voting. He only went six innings. However he had to warm up twice due to the hour rain delay and still yielded zero runs. This should be an interesting year for the Cy Young voting. There is no clear cut winner right now.

Buchholz won't get the Cy Young. He just hasn't thrown enough innings and his numbers suggest effectiveness, not dominance. He has been dominant for long stretches this year and seems to have learned how to pitch to contact; however, it will take at least another year for "voters" to buy that he is getting by on stuff rather than good fortune.

Until that happens, the bigger names with more innings will get more votes.

Pretty hard to win the Cy Young if you're not a strikeout pitcher. King Felix is doing exactly what he did last year. If his win-loss record were the same as last year, he would probably be the frontrunner.

But as it stands right now, it's wide open. I'm leaning towards Cliff Lee myself. Not the best record (won't hold that against him), but his 13.73 K/BB is just ridiculous. For a reliever, it would be insane. For a starter, it's unheard of.

Yeah, if the award was intended to identify which pitcher had a more valuable, or meaningful, performance during the season. It is intended to identify the best pitcher. Does that mean I think the voters will get it right? No, but if I'm following the intent, that's not all that really matters.

Like others have said here, the winner, assuming things play out over the last month and a half like they have over the first 4.5, "should" be Felix Hernandez. However, it won't be.

Sadly this is what might happen...:(

This has been my point from the beginning. The voters seem to make the Cy Young all about the most valuable pitcher. Felix is the most deserving candidate

Still think Hughes is better than Clay you f***ing imbecile? You have no credibility at all moron.. You are a dimwitted, simpleton..like every other Yankee fan I have ever met. Clay is an ELITE ACE and one of the best pitchers in the game.. I predicted as much at the BEGINNING of the year... You are a frontrunning ninny who has no apptitude to look at any player on the Yankees in an objective manner. Clay has been better than Lee, CC, and Felix so far and if he keeps this up..he will deservedly win the award.

there's no factual basis to your argument that it's difficult to win the cy young if you don't pitch for a playoff team. the last 2 years, 0 of the 4 cy young award winners pitched for a playoff team

Buchholz is pitching up to his ceiling, Hughes isnt. Buch is the better pitcher right now. Though I must say, your acting up now is hilarious. Buchholz' great season is about to be wasted as you're gonna be home in October

I am pretty sure you guys care. I know I would if I were a sox fan

you clearly don't understand what it's like to be a red sox fan if you think we're going to cry over missing the playoffs one year. i grew up on teams that would finish 20 games back of a playoff spot, i'm happy every year they're in contention

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ********. Like Yaz said you've been doubting this team since July.

Doubting, yes. Hence why I said "outside chance" dumbass. That means, not likely but possible
