Because it might not just be a few weeks. Rib problems have a way of lingering. Also because you can't count on McDonald or Reddick to sustain their production.

I say McDonald will be no worse than what we have seen to date. He may tail off at the plate but so what?

Reddick has not produce at the plate and needs to make better, more regular contact and drive the ball into the gaps. In Pawtucket.

And that's why we need another OF.

Bill Hall has played the OF too much recently. He's supposed to be our utility infielder and 5th OF, not the platoon LF with a bit of infield utility. We need a backup OF so we can play Hall in the infield and rest people when we need to.

Peter Gammons commented that the Sox tried to ask the Rangers about old buddy David Murphy... but were turned away. They have also been scouting Cubs' outfielder Sam Fuld who has an OBP this year above .400 in Triple A. He's a New Hampshire boy and grew up a die hard Sox fan

I played againt Fuld in AAU. He was pretty fricking good

call up a minor leaguer, i dont think we need to dish out dough for someone whos going to play a handful of games.

if Nava clicks' date=' that could be the answer.[/quote']I was at the game yesterday, and it was a big thrill. However, I don't think the Sox can keep putting their eggs in AAA baskets.

I like Fuld a lot. Got a chance to see him play last year with the Cubs. Excellent outfielder. But his OBP is nowhere near .400 this year; he's struggled quite a bit.

With McDonand and Hall both able to back up CF, we don't need Fuld per se as long as one of McDonald and Nava are producing.

The way Nava's looked in the last couple games I'm in *no* hurry to rush Hermida back, that's for dang sure.

I don't know if they will have a better option than Nava, when trade-cost is taken into account. He's a switch hitter with good OPB skills and a better than avg arm. I think he can probably go .800+ OPS, which would be sufficient as a replacement.

I don't see many better options out there, though someone like DeJesus would be okay if he didn't cost too much.

This is logical and pragmatic.

There is no need to panic as far as the outfield is concerned. It's the bull pen that needs attention.

800+ OPS seems a bit unrealistic, especially considering that's better than we'd see from Ellsbury. But if he can stay around 700, that's perfectly fine, and maybe he'll be pick up some trade value once the rest of the outfield gets healthy.

Why is this guy not in Boston with Cameron on the DL again? This is becoming a joke at this point...it's clear Ellsbury has let Boras get in his head, which is fine when you're an elite talent like Manny Ramirez and all but not when you're an average at best center fielder.

No one who defends this guy can bash JD Drew any longer.

Unless you're holding Ellsbury's medical reports in your hand as you say that you're in no position to judge whether or not he should be back.

This is a lost year, I have *no* problem letting Ellsbury get back to 100% before putting him back out there. Anything that reduces the likelihood that his ineffectiveness will carry over to next season is all to the good right now.

Posted
He's 3 for 3 for Pawtucket today (through 5 inning) with an RBI double and 7 for 12 in three games for the PawSox

Based on that, I don't need medical reports to tell me he should get ass back to Boston. When you're hitting near .700 and making spectacular plays in the outfield, there is zero reason for Patterson to be starting centerfield, zero. Play for your damn team, or say hello to San Diego.

It's not about how he performs, he could hit 10 for 10 and if there's a chance that he could reinjure himself in Boston, don't call him up yet.

I think we'll see him with the big club in a couple days, but there's a reason they call it a "rehab" assignment, he's not down there for performance reasons so him tearing up Pawtucket is not news to me.

Posted
How is he more likely to injure himself in Boston than Pawtucket? He's still playing 9 innings, same position, same number of at bats... its not like he's DHing.
Posted

Because in Pawtucket, if he is in pain you can pull him from the game.

Look, I'm sure Ellsbury is as antsy as you are to get back, but railing at Ellsbury or the Sox won't get him here any quicker. They're going to make sure he's ready before he comes back this time. It's as simple as that.

I feel like I'm talking to a little kid who keeps asking are we there yet. If he was ready to come to Boston, HE'D BE HERE.

you can do the same in MLB

Well, he already said he is going to be able to "feel it" for the rest of the season, so what's the point in even keeping him in Pawtucket if it is not going to get better?
Posted

He is going to "feel it," but I have seen no indication of there being risk of further injury. He would simply be playing with pain or discomfort, which several players do for their teams EVERYDAY.

Pedroia's injury could potentially leave him on the shelf until next year, if not through it. He is busting his ass to get back, and was quoted as saying "I think the Red Sox need me more that the Paw Sox." That is the attitude we want.

This team is a better team with Ellsbury at the top of the lineup. He is hitting and fielding better than his replacements, all while we slip down in the standings heading into August....

I know it is a little apples and oranges, but Ty Cobb got slashed with a knife and played the next day. Ellsbury needs to get up to the big club and start contributing. We aren't out of this thing, yet.

Nice post Space Man. Ask Victor MartinEz if he feels his broken thumb when he catches 90+ mph fastballs. And oh yeah, he's doing it in a contract year.

The sox are 6.5 out with 56 to play. They're not out of this thing by a long shot but Ellsbury seems content with wasting games in Pawtucket as the big club continues to falter.

It's a selfish decision on Jacoby's part and it's said that we watch him go 7 for 12 in AAA while the Sox could use it in Boston

I may have missed something, but where is it being reported that he's in Pawtuckett via his own decision? Rehab assignment decisions are usually made by the team. He's playing ball now, which means he's healthy enough to play. Where he plays is up to management, I believe.

There's room to question how long it took him to get back, but I'd caution further criticism directed at him about where he's playing.

Posted
Call him up when the team feels he's ready and not a second sooner. They know a heck of a lot more about the real situation than we do. They already made the mistake of trying to rush him back once and it cost Ellsbury another month on the DL. Take your time.

From how the FO talked about Ellsbury, it sounded like he would already be back but they wanted one more rehab game to make sure.
