Two plays cost us the game-- the blown DP call at first base and Scutaro's error.

There was good defense involved in the first play.:D

No one mentioned this, but I would've PH Lowell for Ortiz in the 8th when they brought in Marte. I know Tito isn't trying to kill Ortiz's confidence this early, but that would've been a better matchup.

I think they should exploit the only two good things left in Varitek's offense: He can hit at home and he can hit lefties, but that's just me.

The classic off the plate Rivera call

This was my initial reaction as well, and the only reason I'm responding to this now is because I looked it up at the time.

The home plate umpire was bad tonight, but not in this case.

I thought it was a strike, no question about it. Then again, the guy sucks, he's been getting strike calls his entire career...blah blah blah...

By the way, MSU, I got a kick out of reading the game thread, because while everyone continued to argue, you just kept talking about the game haha.

As for this post, at the time, he definitely should have, although I'm not at all surprised that he didn't. Thing is, once Youkilis moved up to second, you would probably prefer the lefty up there. Marte benefitted from a really bad strike call, and Ortiz just missed the 2-1 pitch.

Errors are meaningless.

Don't you know?

The way they're handed out (based on some random goon's opinion) is really stupid and they should never be taken seriously. Doesn't change the fact that it was still a horrible play by Scutaro.

In my opinion, scorekeepers tend to award a batter a hit when it really should have been an error much more often than the other way around. I agree, if player doesn't have a lot of errors, that doesn't necessarily make him a good defender. However, if a player has a lot of errors, that's pretty telling in my opinion.
