Maybe he can pull of a Moose '08.

I thought the same thing today when I saw his pitching line. There's something to be said about a player leaving it all out on the field in the last year of their career. But to be honest, the chances of Petttite holding up over a full season at his age, throwing 110+ pitches his entire career aren't very good.

With the improved OF defense. A sub-4 ERA wouldn't surprise me.

The defense this year from the Yankees really doesn't look that much better. Gardner's a huge upgrade over Damon, but Jeter looks like his old self out there so far this year. He's really struggled to make plays to his left.

He was talking strictly about OF defense though.

Granderson + Gardner>>>>>>>> Melky + Damon.

Pettitte's a ground ball pitcher, I don't see why the outfield defense would be more relevant than the infield defense.

Because in recent years, that trend has adjusted significantly.

In 2009 he had a career high 37.8 FB%, and he's sitting on an extremely high (by his standards) 33.9% this season. That 0.0 HR/FB% will catch up to him in a bad way though.

2009 is the only year of his career in which he didn't get more ground outs than air outs and even then, it was by a few percentage points. 2003-2008 he got about 1.5 ground outs for every air out he got and this year he's gotten 1.44 ground outs for every air out he's gotten.

But that's the point. He's no longer the guy who got ground balls by the boatloads. Guys are lifting the ball a lot more against him, so OF defense is that much more important.

Sure the new OF Defense helps but Pettitte said his elbow feels great this year which I'm sure is the main reason he's pitching so well. Its has bothered him over the course of his career, I remember he had a start scratched back in 2008 because it was inflamed

I think there needs to be more than one year to demonstrate any kind of trend. He's right back to his ground ball ratios this year.

FB% is the second highest of his career at the time of this post.

I'm sure it felt good at the beginning of last year when he was great as well. He had a 2.96 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in April and a 4.35 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP the rest of the year.

Hasn't he had higher fastball percentages in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006 than he has this year so far?

Perhaps his ERA will stay around 1.35 this April and drop to around 2.96 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP the rest of the year, not walking a single batter in 8 innings and shutting down a potent offense like the Angels shows the potential is there. I have a feeling this will be the last year we see him pitching, it would be nice to see him go out with a bang like Mussina did in '08, racking 20 wins

And perhaps Josh Beckett will have a 2.96 ERA, 1.10 WHIP the rest of the year. That's a much more likely scenario than the one you just presented. Let's not get carried away with April sample sizes. The Orioles and Blue Jays have had some of the best records in April the past few years.

Say what you want, but if Pettitte has the stuff that he has flashed in the early going, he is gonna have a hell of a yr. Last season, his curveball was flatter and his velo was down. This yr, for some reason, he has his curve from 10 yrs ago back. Yesterday, it was ridiculous. If his curve stays that filthy and his FB stays in the 88-90mph range, he is gonna have a sub 4 ERA. It's that simple. This April is the best stuff I have seen from Pettitte since he came back from Houston

Granderson and Gardner >>>>>>>>>> Melky and Damon.

Runners can't score from 2nd with line drives to LF :D.

How many plays Jeter hasn't made to his left so far, Mr. "April Sample Size" guy?

Also, Robby Cano hasnt made a boneheaded play yet. Only 1 error, being an errant throw on a DP when he was being taken out. ARod has looked nimble at 3b and Tex has been Tex. The Yankee defense is vastly underrated

I've been very impressed with A-Rod defensively so far. Last year he was awful, coming back from the hip surgery, but he appears to be fully healthy.

Something is wrong with Vazquez. Put him on the DL or something. Anyone is better than him right now

I don't think is that serious. Unlike Wang last year.

Dave Eiland said he is the kind of pitcher who needs to be reminded about his mechanics constantly. He does have a bit more complicated a delivery than your standard drop and drive guy. I dont think it is injury related. He just cannot locate anything right now and his FB is slow.
