Who do you think is going to have that "breakout" season this year? It can be a Red Sox player, or from another team if you like.

Mine is Jon Lester. I know he has had two solid seasons already. But I believe he assumes the Sox "Ace" role and runs with it. With Beckett and Lackey pushing him, I think he will be a top contender for the AL Cy Young award at the end of the season. And establish himself amongst the elite SP in baseball.

2010 line: (prediction)

35 starts, 20-5 W-L Record, 2.95 ERA 220K's 65 BB 215 IP

I'll take a hack at the obvious pick.

We can all hope right?

The sox biggest breakout candidate, IMO, is Daniel Bard. I think he enters the eschelon of elite setup men by season's end, spurring a controversy with Paps and the Boston brass at season's end and sending him packing to another club.

For the Yankees, I think the biggest breakout player will be ARod, if a multi-MVP can really break out. I expect him to put up gaudy numbers in the Bronx for 2010 and take home the MVP award.

For the rest of baseball, my choice is David Price. I think he becomes a CY candidate this season, taking over the spot previously owned by Kazmir at the top of the Rays rotation.

Bard's my pick for a regression actually. Not because his stuff is everything other than huge , but because he's still a bit young and unfinished and the league will be seeing him a second time. He's got to prove he can stay ahead of the hitters. I'm not counting on him to be the fulltime 8th inning man just yet.

Ya I think Arod is eligable to have a "breakout" year. I mean if he put up a season that stood out from the rest of his previous seasons, I guess you could consider that a breakout year.

Bard is an interesting pick. I was going back and forth between him and Lester for my pick.

Price is a nice candidate. He definitely has the tools to get him into that elite group.

To me Lester has already broken out and established himself as a great pitcher in the AL. For the Red Sox, I guess by default I'm gonna have pick between Buchholz and Bard. I think with more exposure Bard will have a rough time this year, not for the whole time but for stretches. This will be his first full year in the big leagues. So I'll go with Clay Buchholz. A spot in the rotation is finally his and after a great end to the 2009 season, I expect him to build off of it and strive toward that potential we have all been raving about for the past couple of years.

I agree that Buchholz is going to break out. In the rest of MLB' date=' I'd say Carlos Santana has a really good rookie season.[/quote']

I doubt he'll come up until late in the season.

I think Carlos Santana will get a lot of play this season' date=' especially with Cleveland likely to be sucking pond water by June[/quote']

Cleveland got Wyatt and then they got another catcher in FA, I think lou marson?

Marson came in the Lee deal last year. Toregas is not very good. I doubt either stand in the way of Santana.

Prediction: Carlos Santana will continue to shred the guitar

Is this not a guitar thread?

Red Sox: Ellsbury. I think he'll regain the patience he displayed in the minors and when he first came up to the majors and become an elite leadoff hitter.

MLB: Kyle Banks. He had an .869 OPS as a 22 year old for the Padres last year in his first 54 major league games. Over his minor league career he's been a .304/.392/.505 hitter.

I also believe Buchholz will have his breakout season. This offseason, I keep pointing to the span of three consecutive games where he pitched against Verlander, Sabathia, and Halladay and kept the Sox in all of them. He can pitch against the best of them.

I would love for Buchholz to be a breakout candidate next year. If either him or Daisuke pitch like top of the rotation starters, we'll probably be the best team in baseball. But I'm troubled by Buch's poor peripherals last year.

His 1.38 WHIP (.289 BABIP) and 4.69 FIP don't exactly scream dominance. Hopefully he can kick it up a notch next year.

On the Sox, Bard or Buchholz.

MLB: I like a lot of guys. Wade Davis, Matt Wieters, Ian Stewart, Max Scherzer, Brett Anderson, Kevin Slowey, Scott Sizemore, Gordon Beckham, Colby Rasmus, Jay Bruce, Madison Bumgarner.

I'd give B.J. a pass last year because of the shoulder injury, but if he doesn't rebound this season...

I'd say Justin has emerged as the better player.
