Joe Nelson and Atchison aren't going to close or setup, the Red Sox have 4 solid relievers in Bard, Paps, Ramirez and Okajima and possibly 5 depending how Delcarmen performs. Not many teams have at least 4 different relievers they'd feel comfortable having out there in the 8th inning.

Im not seeing how the bullpen is facing "hard times'. Sure it wont be as good as last year, but it still a top 5 bullpen at worst and I would be confident calling it the best.

I think it's probably going to be Atchison and Schoeneweis. Nothing scary there, but then again it's our 6 and 7 guys in the pen so they're not going to be asked to work miracles. Plus, there's always the option that we may trade for somebody as well.

Exactly, whoever the 6th and 7th bullpen guys are, it shouldn't be a concern. Unless there is an injury, its not like these guys will be pitching in 1 run games or anything. The bullpen is far from facing "hard times". Im sure there is numerous teams who would like to have 4 guys they feel comfortable with in the 8th/9th innings in 1 run games.

Paps, Okajima, Ramirez, Bard, Atchison, Nelson, Delcarmen

or

Rivera, Chamberlain, Marte, Robertson, Aceves, Park, Mitre.

Sorry BS21, I just dont see it

Aceves is hurt... Red Sox bullpen is better, you are a biased yankee idiot. Please stop using bias as a form of argument, it doesn't work. Yankees have 1 sure thing in there bullpen in Rivera. Red Sox have 3 in RR, Paps and Okajima. Give me Red Sox bullpen every time.

Joba hasn't pitched in bullpen in a few season how will he do this year? Nobody knows. But let me guess? He will dominate right?

Marte? Seriously, this guy 50% of the time is awful, 50% is good. Another huge question mark.

Aceves is hurt.

Mitre?

Park?

Robertson. Alright ill give you him so make it 2.

Another thing what the f*** does it matter if Yankees have a better 7th reliever then red sox? oh yeah it doesn't, they basically just pitch in blowouts.

Silly Kitten, red sox forums are for smart people unlike you jacksonbitchfacewhateveryournameis

Schoenweis stinks-- a disaster. When Dice K returns, Schoenweis should get DFA'd. Who will go to the pen when Dice K returns. Although it pains me to say it, Wakefield has looked really good. He has earned the spot in the rotation.

Since when is Scott Schoeneweis on this team? He is awful. If he ever pitches a meaningful inning we lost that game.

Not off to a good start, Kreskin.

Red Sox wrap up their rotation

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff April 5, 2010 12:45 PM

The Josh Beckett extension gives the Red Sox rotation security through 2014. Here is where the starters stand in terms of what they have left on their deals counting this season:

John Lackey: Signed through 2014 for $82.5 million.

Josh Beckett: Signed through 2014 for $80 million.

Jon Lester: Signed through 2013 for $28.75 million with a $13 million option for 2014.

Daisuke Matsuzaka: Signed through 2012 for $28 million

Tim Wakefield: Signed through 2011 for $5 million

Meanwhile, Clay Buchholz hasn't reached arbitration yet and they have Casey Kelly, Michael Bowden, Felix Doubront, Stolmy Pimental, Drake Britton, etc. on the way.

What the Beckett deal does is give the Red Sox the flexibility to use Buchholz or other young starters as trade chips if needed.

Now while this roster of starters is deep, depth can be fleeting. Nobody has any idea for sure what Matsuzaka is any more, Buchholz is still somewhat unproven, Wakefield is 43 and an injury can strike at any time.

But the smartest move in baseball is to get as many good starters as you can under control and the Red Sox have done that. It's a major investment and probably a good one.

We aren't going to trade Buchholz. Between Wakefield and Daisuke, and incidental injuries by other pitchers, 6 starters is an absolute necessity.

I'd really prefer to have Wakes in the swing role. Kid needs reps.
