Just curious' date=' do you actually think that Lowell's a better overall player than Beltre, or are you nitpicking in an attempt to criticize the Sox for a move that actually makes them better?[/quote']

I love you in a non-gay way.

I appreciate it. I feel as if a lot of us find flaws in Jacko's arguments, but we're just so overwhelmed with his hatred for the Sox and his multiple lapses in logic per post, that we don't know where to start. I took a step back, identified what I thought was his largest logical inconsistency of the post and kept it short but sweet. I'm going to try to ignore all his smoke and mirrors from now on and just get right to the heart of his faulty arguments so he can't distract us from the facts with his wide ranging claims.

That arm is a thing of beauty.

That was my reaction as well. I thought Lowell was a great defensive 3B before last year, but Beltre takes it to a whole new level.

Beltre will impress a lot of us with his defense and hopefully with his offense. A lot of those plays came off of players who are really fast. Upton, Granderson, Castillo, and a few others. Then the one of Varitek. :(

Beltre and his recent ability to post .325 obp's will be in McClain hospital using Rogelio Morets old room before May 31st...In the drive to eliminate Lowell from this teams roster they really dont give a f*** who replaces him so long as we get to sponsor some other teams payroll this year, who wants to start a poll as to where Beltre will be come August 1st...Ya gotta give the inside track to St Louis who have made Theo a usefull idiot in the Piniero,Smoltz and Lugo moves but San Fran gets a maybe since they harnessed Brad Penny from the heap of scatine that Theo has brought aboard in recent years.

WTF, this guy goes against every element of their offensive philosophy and since hitting 49 in 04 hes slid down the line to where he is today, a 1 yr gamble by a desperate team with money to burn.

Beltre looks like a GREAT defensive 3rd baseman-- maybe the best I've seen since Brooks Robinson. Like Brooks, he can charge a bunt or slowly hit ball, grab it barehanded and side-arm his throw to 1B with great speed and accuracy. His arm looks stronger than Brooks'. And he has great lateral range and athleticism at 3B. One of the Boston papers used the word "dazzling" this morning. That's the right word, from what I've seen. He is an ESPN highlights type of defensive player.

Boras was right when he said he deserved a premium for his defense. The guy looks close to amazing on those YouTube highlights.

And people say that my posts are negative. I also am not very confident in how Beltre will perform, but I am happy that it is a 1 year deal. Maybe he'll juice up again and hit 40 HRs.

Beltre is what Lowell was five years ago, but with better defense. If you're gonna whine about his low OBP then you gotta whine about Lowell's too. The team's "philosophy" is to win ballgames, and Beltre will help them do just that, this is a guy that literally busted a nut last year, but had three 25-HR years in a row at Safeco Field.

What are you talking about?

It's tough to make any judgement about Lowell right now. The thumb obscures the hitting picture, and it's hard to say if the hip will improve enough this year for him to play 3B or even 1B. He probably has some value as a RHd DH--even in Boston. I don't think anything will happen until they see him in ST.

There's a judgment you can make on Lowell right now. He can't play defense.

I'd like to see Beltre cut down on his errors this season. Youk at 1B will definitely help.

Yeah, he never had a really good defensive 1B during his tenure in Seattle. But remember, sometimes errors come from getting to balls other players can't get to and rushing instead of keeping the ball.

There is much truth in this statement.
