Some here may be interested in a newly-released book 'Babe Ruth at the Red Sox: A Scrapbook' now available on Amazon.co.uk which features newspaper coverage of Ruth's rise to stardom at the Red Sox, and also the rifts that led to his leaving the club.

I believe that they sold him, because he was such an outrageously out of control degenerate drunk that the owners felt that he would be dead by age 25. I don't think he had a residence when he played for the Sox. He went from the ball park to the bar and the cops had to wake him up from the gutter or at a brothel to remind him that he had a game that day.

I'm going to purchase all my books about American sports from UK websites now.

I just ordered some Twilight books from Amazon.fr too.

well... he did have a residence while with the Sox. he owned a house in Sudbury, Mass. that he loved.

Ruth indeed owned a home in Sudbury.

Sudbury is about 25-30 northwest of Boston. Currently, there is no easy or quick way to get to and from Fenway. It takes about 45 minutes with little traffic.

I wonder how difficult the commute must have been for Ruth. Especially if he was impaired.

He probably stayed there in the offseason. he ocassionally had to go home to his wife.

After his playing days, the Yankees had nothing to do with him. The owner of the Yankees when asked about the possibility of Ruth managing the Yankees said he couldn't be trusted to manage the ball team when he couldn't manage himself. He was a disgrace in his personal life.

That he may have been' date=' but he was also very charitable, especially when it came to the kids.[/quote']But not his own daughter as noted by Gehrig's mother causing a rift between Gehrig and Ruth.

Okay, fine. but before this turns into a full-blown argument I'm just gonna bow out and say whatever, you're right. Although his daughter Julia never had anything but great things to say about him as a father and all of his charitable actions have been well-documented you would rather just go back and forth about the character of a guy who's been dead for 61 years. I'm not disputing that the man had a drinking problem, as well as the countless other demons he battles with, as most of us do. But just keep in mind that before you go judging other people; especially those who have had a much greater impact on the world than yourself and who have been adored by generations of Americans, make sure you look in the mirror. For somebody so judgmental of everybody else you MUST be perfect, huh?

Idc, it's not that important to me, so I'm done. Go on and post a rage induced insult-laden response in your best effort to get me to partake in your never-ending back and forth battles of bitterness, but I'm in too good a mood right now to give a f***. Have a nice night.

Read some biagraphies on Gehrig. There you will find documented Gehrig's and his mother's opinions about Ruth's neglect of his daughter.

He was a great player-- a titan, who helped save the game, but he was low-life scum in his personal life.

On another note' date=' I wonder how Ruth would perform against today's players.[/quote']The fat slob would last a couple years before he ate himself out of the game. He'd have a career like Mo Vaughn.

Ruth's grandaughter (?) is a Red Sox fan. Babe was cool with kids, maybe not his own though.

He sounds like a modern ballplayer. Arod doesn't seem like a great dad, but these Babe stories do kinda sound like a lot of modern athletes. Except modern athletes usually have some common sense to stay in decent physical shape .

Oh no! The Yankees realized he was a degenerate drunk as well?

Considering his moral code (or rather a lack thereof) he probably would have used steroids. And considering his attitudes towards moderation (or rather a lack thereof) he probably would have ruined his body by age 35. So even if he ever had the will power and moral determination to get into shape, he probably wouldn't have ever been more influential a player than Mark McGwire.

Doubt it, unless steroids came in red meat form. And 35 is a little young, he waited all the way until the age of 38/39 before his body was junk.

I think he meant in todays baseball with all the roids, Growth Hormones, and other PEDS that Ruth would have destoryed his body at 35 as opposed to when he destoryed it in his late 30's when he actually played.

I count probably 10 personal insults a day made by regular Sox fans on the site, you included from time to time. I don't disagree with you, but lets not preach about following the rules here, come on now.

For someone who hates the yankees so much what are you doing reading biographies about Gehrig?

He would probably be average at best, but what makes him so great is how much better he was than everyone else when HE played. Imagine today if we saw somebody out-homering every other team in the league.

I never start any name calling... ever. If i do it, it is always in retaliation. I have zero tolerance for Yankee band wagoners coming here and acting like this with a couple of dozen posts. He should be banned as I was not the only one he spewed insults at yesterday. Some how you equate my opinion of Babe Ruth with a personal insult. It is not. You need to know the difference.

I call out my Red Sox brethren when they step over the line on the rule, so Yankee trash should expect the same.

You're the least indicated person in the site to make this comment.

It's trolling attempts like the one you made in the Holliday thread that initiate name calling, you f***ing hypocrite.

At this point after seeing more of TD I wouldn't care if you called him names or not

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black lol.

OK I didn't mean to revive this thread, I just came here to share an interesting pic of the Babe that I found that obviously doesn't warrant a new thread.

Here's a shot of Ruth from 1923 posing with John McGraw wearing a Giants uniform. Apparently he suited up for the Giants for an charity benefit exhibition game against the minor league Baltimore Orioles on October 3rd 1923. I thought that it was a pretty cool shot. Not a surprise that neither of them are smiling, as McGraw DESPISED Ruth and how he was "ruining" the game with his extraordinary power hitting. I'm sure the feelings were reciprocated by Ruth.

You know what i'm gonna say: T. R. O. L. L.

I will admit though, you've been a lot more involved and a lot less trolle-y lately.

Oh well gee thanks, that means so much. Your opinions and approval mean the world to me

Babe Ruth would probably swat 1,000 HR's if he played today. He is the greatest player of all time. In 1920, only the Phillies as a team managed to hit more HR's than Ruth did all by himself.

I would have loved to see him play. Accounting for the changes in the mound, the ball, the ball parks, and the rules, he'd be an unstoppable force.
