It is in another Penny thread lol

But probably does deserve it's own thread.

I thought early last off season that bringing in Penny would be a nice depth move for the #5 spot. Which it was. Penny gave some really quality outings. But was never gonna cut it as a #3. The guy has been bad in the 2nd half of his career. It was one of the reasons I would hope they traded him by now. But with injuries to Dice-K and Wake, it was just not feasible. Overall I think the move is a push. He helped for awhile, he was horrible for awhile. Not the worst out of the #5 spot any how.

He probably had almost no trade value, and until they signed Byrd, there were several weeks that they din't even have a warm body to take his spot in the rotation.

The combination of Wake's return and Tazawa putting a couple adequate outings together made this pretty much inevitable.

I'm just pissed that we don't save any money on his salary. If he was asking for his release then he should cough up some of the salary and go somewhere else. Penny deserves a kick in the nuts.

Well, we couldn't trade him at the deadline because Wake was out and our depth wasn't proving itself at that point. It's not a conincidence that we waited until Wake gave us a strong outing and Tazawa started looking decent before cutting ties with Penny. We needed warm bodies.

What about the same minors guys like Bowden and Tazawa that are up now? I mean, after seeing Penny's stuff, what would gambling have hurt?

Penny wasn't that far removed from a decent stretch of pitching. Personally I wouldn't have minded gambling but I understand why you don't deal a starting pitcher when you are as shallow as we were at the deadline with Wake and Daisuke down.

Frankly I'm not surprised, he was useful while Wakefield was rehabbing and before Buchholz came around in the majors, with DiceK closer and closer to a return it was a likely scenario. Wagner > Penny, Wakefield, Daisuke, Buchholz > Penny. I wish we were in the position to trade him back when he did have some trade value but with the amount on injuries to the rotation we couldn't afford to trade him.

The Rockies have some interest in Brad Penny, who was just released by the Red Sox, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Renck sees indications that the Rockies have a decent shot at signing Penny, who should clear waivers Monday. At that point, Penny would cost the team less than $100k.

Wow' date=' i really didn't think this would happen so soon. Best of luck Penny.[/quote']

Have you not been paying attention?:D;)

Yes i have, but i just had a feeling they were going to keep him around for LR in the BP. Trust me, I'm really glad he is gone. That opened a spot for someone who is worth it.

Wouldn't have been a bad option tonight.

It's not like Hunter Jones is a complete stiff. I would argue that Jones is a viable 2-3 inning MLB RP.

Just a thought.

Nah, I liked watching Nick Green more. Cant believe he hit 91 on the gun!!!!!! Should think about a career changing move since he cant hit his weight or field a ground ball. Dude does have a cannon.

I'm sure you could round up a bunch of SS, 3B, and RF who can hit 90. But with any accuracy?

Whatever else Nick Green does in his career, he now has bragging rights to 2 shutout innings against some pretty good hitters.
