An unknown team claimed Brad Penny earlier in the month, only to see the Red Sox pull him back, sources tell WEEI.com's Rob Bradford. The window for the Red Sox to deal Penny to the claiming team has passed, so they won't be able to trade him at all.

Penny, who lost his rotation spot, makes just $5MM plus incentives, so he's a more affordable option than Doug Davis or Jon Garland, but the Red Sox wanted more than salary relief or they would have handed Penny over. He isn't likely to net the Red Sox any compensation picks, since he doesn't project to be a Type B free agent.

If he lost his rotation spot' date=' what good is he? Should've just dumped him and made him someone else's problem.[/quote']

cause earlier this month, they desperately needed starters (see: call up of Tazawa)

I would say he would be an OK long option out of the pen but now that we have Wagner we really have no room for him and I don't wan t to see Bard lose his spot to f***ing Penny

He won't. At worst, Bard will get sent down until Sept. 1st and then come back up when the rosters expand to 40.

Yes they did. Penny was one of the reasons why they were scrambling for starters. For f***'s sake, he threw 121 pitches in 5.2 innings.

It could have been Texas who claimed him.

Maybe it was the Cardinals. They seem to be having good luck with our castoffs, and I'm sure they don't mind since it's the Red Sox who are paying them.

If Texas wanted Penny, I think I would have just let them have him, the way he's been pitching lately.

I would have done that deal for anything then.. A team that is chasing you in the wild card gets a pitcher that has been horrendous why not give him too Texas? It would hurt them and help us.

The Sox should place him on waivers again' date=' whoever claims him make a trade or let him go.[/quote']

I said put him on waivers again. Which they did earlier this month. If someone claims him, try and get something for him, and if they can't just let him go to whomever claimed him.

Am I wrong in some way?

Someone who was on waivers and taken off them cannot be put back on.

Oh ok. See I thought they could be placed on again but couldn't be pulled back.

I cant believe believe Penny is only 31 as he resembles Brendan Gleason in the face and body.

His tools are still there, the man was consistantly hitting the 95-96 range on Friday and his curve ball was dropping off the table, why cant he get anyone out? The begining of the year he was able to go 6 innings even if he got rocked but now you see him laboring by the 2nd inning of each start.

You hate to give up on a guy this young who still throws hard but if he isnt interested in getting in shape what are we to do other than can his ass...He too will go to a national league team and be dominant as all the AL cast offs seem to do these days.

Starter needs 3 pitches at least.

Penny has the potential to be a dominant reliever with the heater and hook. His problem is that he insists he's a starter..

Actually BSN07 is right. They can be put on but then they cannot be taken back off unless they clear.

TY I was pretty sure I was right about that.

Based on his age he still has time to salvage his career but his work ethic is putrid.

MLB ball players shouldnt have slabs of backfat and huge jowels.

Only if you just wanna give him away, which is silly seeing how rosters will expand in 5 days.

Something tells me that isn't the problem.

There are exceptions to just about every rule, for every CC Sabathia there are 10 Rich Garces.

"I asked for my release and got it."

Don't let the door hit you on the ass. Next time you go hunting, bring Dick Cheney with you.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't said in the tone that you took it as. He seemed rather pleasant and grateful for the opportunity throughout the entire article.

f*** Penny. Too much pride to go to the pen when he's stunk all season long? What a selfish, vainglorious piece of s***.

I'm so glad they released him. Like other teams were saying "He keeps trying to blow people by with his fastball and we're just sitting on it. He's got good speed on it, but no movement."

At least we won't have to worry about suffering a heart attack every 5 days.
