After seeing what Smoltz has done leaving Boston. Can you blame the guy for not wanting to go to the pen and maybe catch on with a NL contender? He might very well end up back in LA.

overall, he gave the team about what I expected. He didn't stink all season long. Up until recently, he gave the team a chance to win with most of his outings which is all you can expect from your fifth starter.

Probably not considering the comments Larry Bowa made about his last ST.

Agreed. He wasn't a bad 5th. he was a horrible 3rd. Which he was never intended to be.

There in a pennant race and they already signed Vincent Padilla.... But the Bowa thing could make it less probable.

Maybe Colorado, SF, MIL, or ATL?

Florida ought to make a move for Penny. Remember, he was part of their 2003 team, and Florida's in the wild card race.

Florida is a good call. There might be a chance there. One thing is for sure. I think he will be in the NL. I don't see any AL team picking him up.

Flyball pitcher. He's not really up to his career average level of performance this year. He leaves it up, as hard as he throws, in that thin atmosphere, hitters are going to dial long distance on him.

Humidor.

He'll get smashed, no doubt, but not as many a longball as you predict.

I thought the didn't allow the Rockies to use the Humidor?

Where'd ya read that?

Man it's been awhile. I thought they hadn't been using it for a couple years now. I could very well be wrong though. For some reason I think I read something in 2007 when they were making their big push.

I'll try and find something

Seems I was mistaken. I retract my earlier statement:D

The Yankees claimed Brad Penny earlier in August, only to see the Red Sox pull him back, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney

It would be a ballsy move if Cashman were to pick him up, and it could cost them their season. Maybe he'll view it as a low risk high reward move. I think we've all learned that is just a clever phrase for a broken down player picked from the dollar store bin. It's high risk if you need them to play an important role on your team.

I don't think that low risk high reward is accurate either, but I don't think it means it is "high risk" either.

It is simply "bad news" if one of these guys ends up playing an important role on your team. Penny wasn't supposed to be toeing the rubber as this team's #3 starter at any point. He was maybe supposed to be a #5, if he could beat out Smoltz.

Otherwise he should be thought of as nothing more than another option, the same as Bowden or Tazawa or last year's Paul Byrd or whoever else other teams have as #6 options. Nobody has a really quality pitcher as a #6. This year's version for the Sox was Brad Penny. It hurt the team not because Penny sucked, but because Dice-K and Wake disappeared halfway through the season.

I would rather that Theo try to get guys who have a history of success at the MLB level than not trying to get those guys. Who would we rather have as a #5 or #6 starter? Sergio Mitre is the Yankees answer. Who is the #6 starter for Baltimore? Tampa? The answer is never stellar and it is never free of risk.

He would have been in the rotation whether or not those guys got hurt. What made the hurt worse was having to put Smoltz (the other low risk option) in the rotation at the same time.

This is false.

he had a rotation spot out of Spring Training. He didn't crack the rotation because of injuries.

He was going to hold a spot for Smoltz.

That was the original plan.

Then Smoltz sucked and injuries happened.

Penny and Smoltz -- combined Salary $10.5 million 9 cheap wins and 13 losses. The combined ERA, WHIP and other stats are even more laughable. What a bargain!

Lol did you really expect Smoltz to suck?

I really didn't have big expectations, considering his age and arm surgery, but I didn't expect the level of suck that he gave us. He took Penny-suck to a new level. I wouldn't have been surprised if he had been a .500 picher with a low 5 ERA.

You mean a #5 starter?

I rest my case.

I didn't say that's what i expected. What I really expected, was for him to have a few setbacks and not make it back until September if at all. That's what i expected, and the Sox would have been better off if his rehab had got derailed.
