The Red Sox called up Junichi Tazawa, acquired Chris Woodward from the Mariners and designated Billy Traber for assignment this afternoon, according to D.J. Bean of WEEI.com. Tazawa pitched well in the minors, striking out 88 in 98 AA innings before pitching twice in Triple A.

The Red Sox have designated John Smoltz for assignment. Smoltz was 2-5 with an 8.32 ERA in eight starts for the Sox after signing a one-year, $5.5 million contract. More to come.

Sucks that the Smoltz deal didn't work out in Boston.

Does the Woodward acquisition mean Lowrie is heading to the DL?

The Woodward acquisition means Woodward will be sitting in Pawtucket.

Tazawa has definitely earned a look this year. Let's hope he makes the most of it.

Also I kind of wonder how Michael Bowden feels about this.

I'm glad Smoltz is gone, hopefully he catches on somewhere else and I wish him the best of luck. Traber sucks, I'm glad he's gone as well.

I'm really excited to see how Tazawa does.

You wonder where Smoltz would be if they had started him off in the bullpen. He seemed OK in the first couple of innings of most of his starts. Maybe he needed time to regain durability.

I wonder the same thing about Buchholz--though a completely different situation. Mentally, he might have been better off starting in the bullpen, developing some confidence. Remember Johnny van deMeer? Threw two no-hitters in his first two ML starts. That's the last anyone heard of him.

You wonder how the new kid, Tazawa, is going to react to being thrown directly on the fire. Not everyone is built the same mentally.

Sad to see Smoltz being DFA'd. The Red Sox need the roster spot, but a little more respect was in order IMO. Announce retirement, then release him.

Or he still think he can pitch? lol.

I am glad to see Tazawa up with the Sox. He has pitched 110 innings this year. I wonder how many he will be allowed to pitch if he proves to be effective. Also, do the Sox have another translator traveling with the team for Oki, Saito, and now Tazawa?

Ugh that sucks. I had high hopes for Smoltz; even put him into my MVP Baseball 2005 line up (of course he was a different pitcher then). Best of luck to him

I don't remember Johnny mostly because he last played in 1951, and I wasn't around at that time :D... But he had very good moments after that 2 no hitters, being an All Star 4 times and playing 13 years (losing 2 because of WWII)... So poor Johnny, he was not that bad...

They can't all use the same one...?

The DFA is a little harsh for someone of Smoltz's stature, but it had to be done. On top of Traber being terrible, he was also terribly boring to watch. Glad he's gone.

The Sox owe him nothing. Big deal that he got DFA'd. It has happened to better players than him. The Yankees released Babe Ruth.

If Smoltz stays in Atlanta the rest of the season and retires, do we get any of the money back? Not like it's a concern for Boston, but it does help a bit, and is certainly nothing to ignore.

Smoltz is a great competitor and has has an illustrious career. That said he didn't pan out in Boston. Thanks for the effort in trying to make it back and help the club. Glad to see him going though. Wouldn't have minded if he was sent to the BP.

I'm psyched to see Tazawa.

Theo came to NY to personally give the news to Smoltz. How do you think that conversation went? He just should've said Smoltzie you are not having bad luck. You suck. Pack your s*** and the rest of your $5million and leave.

I think Smoltz probably understood... He knew as well as anyone he was sucking it up. He must have seent he writing on the wall.

John Smoltz has always been a class act. I agree, it's a shame his short time in Boston was an expensive bust. But you gotta do what ya gotta do to win.
