OK, serious question: Do we have any players left in our roster who:

1: Played regularly in the WBC

2: is not currently out of action with some kind of injury?

It's not like any of us didn't see it coming either. Youkilis and Pedroia got hurt DURING the Classic, and if anyone hasn't figured out yet that Daisuke was hiding a shoulder injury since at least mid 2008 they're blind. (Seriously, Dice, you've gone from throwing 94 to throing 84. GET THE SURGERY!!!!!)

I know, I know, national pride, MLB directives, yadda yadda, but when it has this much of an impact on your star players I can't imagine that the owners are happy right now. I doubt the MLBPA is exactly thrilled either. If they can't fix this soon they're going to have to go somewhere else for players.

Granted that but at this point with every Boston regular who played a starting role in the WBC on the DL a month and a half into the season there's space for one last rant.

The best thing to do IMO is to take a page out of the NHL's book during an Olympic year when a large contingent of players go play for their countries. Take away the ASG that year (I don't care if THIS TIME IT COUNTS!!!!!!!1111shift+1!!!), cut the season to 154 games and have the tournament during a two-week span in the middle of July.

All the players are already in the swing of things and don't have to ramp it up too early in ST to be ready in time for the March tourney. They'd probably get more players to participate too.

Wow, that's actually a really good idea.

The MLBPA would throw a fit. Contracts may look like annual deals but they're actually a certain amount per game, totalling that much. That would basically be an instant pay cut for every player in the league unless the league stepped in and said otherwise by official commissioner fiat.

Great idea.... A lot of players would be up for it, as they could get a break mid season and the guys that do play wouldn't have as much risk for injury either.

Win-win all around if you ask me.... which means it will never happen

Pedroia was put on the DL when?

It's dishonest to blame the WBC for Youk and Pedroia. They were fine' date=' and hitting the s*** out of the ball. No ill effects from the tournament.[/quote']

You're right. They were very productive until very recently. Especially Youk. Those plunks he sustained are the reason he is sidelined. As for Dice-K, that may be another matter. Did he damage his shoulder last year and aggravate it in the WBC and early 2009 season? Or did he just throw too much in the WBC?

Didn't Lopez play for Puerto (SP) Rico in the WBC? How much was he used and could it have had an impact on his effectiveness this season? He seemed reasonably effective last season.

I like the idea of playing the wbc in the middle of the season. Players are not rushing to get in shape. I don't have any figures to spit out but i wonder if the nhl is FORCED to shorten the regular season because of the sheer numbers of players wanting to play for their countries? Anyone seen any figures on that?

how bout we get rid of the WBC?

cause that's just not gonna happen, at least not as long as Selig is the commissioner.

How about we just get rid of Selig?

The problem with that is that Selig is usually only a passive evil. Look at the other leagues of professional sports and it's easy to see how we could do a lot worse.
