A .686 is pretty close to what the team has averaged out of the position since 2006. Wilson is a career +4.5 UZR/150 fielder, which is what Lugo did for us in 2007. Only, Lugo's offensive contribution that year was a .643.

I can live with Jack's good D and steady hands. Not sure what I'd give up to get him, but he's an upgrade, IMO.

Honestly I'll take a Green/Lugo platoon for the rest of the first half, then Lowrie in the second half. Besides, do you really want this face on the jumbotron:

So Lugo is a 9M bench player now.. I say we try out young players there like we're doing with Nick Green and Lowrie and take whoever has a better defense.

Are you serious?

Young could have been very helpful to us. He's not as good as he's hyped to be, not by a long way, but he's competent and wouldn't cost much talent.

His contract?

Diminishing range at short?

Already having Lugo under contract?

Anyone?

Agreed.

young

2006 .815 ops .981 field pct

2007 .784 ops .972 field pct

2008 .741 ops .984 field pct

lugo

2006 .762 ops .980 field pct

2007 .643 ops .968 field pct (won the WS with him)

2008 .685 ops .945 field pct

He is hot right now however but I am not so sure he has SS range at this point. Kind of like Jeter.

No one is going to pretend the guy is Hanley. But he does represent an upgrade over Lugo or Green and would only cost money. He doesn't come out this hot out of the game and we might have even been able to just get him in a salary swap with Lugo's not-nearly-as-bad deal.

Lugo is a sunk cost. We'll pay that money whether we get someone else playing or not. That should not be a factor in how we shape our roster.

About the only way I don't touch Young is if for some reason I don't think he'll hit for us.

At present Lugo stays as the utility infielder(altough he is not healthy) and when Lowrie gets back, trade him for a bucket of balls or hopefully something a little better. The Sox will have to eat some of his money....that is a given.

He is hitting pretty well, maybe he can be the new DH. j/k

Not Michael Young, but Texas does has another guy who is more appealing, who I wish the Sox took a stab at. Omar Vizquel.

Look, when all things are said and done....Green, Lugo and Vizquel are all poor offensive players (at this point for Vizquel, who was pretty solid offensive SS years back), so you look at perhaps the most important aspect of the position, defense.....and even 42 years old, Omar is heads and feet above the rest. Plus, you play him in a platoon with one of the other guys so you are not relying on a 42 year old to play SS everyday.

Yeah youre right what was I thinking....Nick Green and Julio Lugo make so much more sense.....2 s***** players starting at SS for one of the best baseball teams in the league. One of which has never done anything and now hes 30 and overperforming b/c as history shows, hes a terrible terrible major league baseball player. Lugo, booting balls all over the field, throwing balls into the stands and his vicious infield grass power make so much more sense.

If all three cant hit, why not take the best one in the field?
