Reports say Dice-K should be back in about two weeks and upon his return, it would seem the Sox have somewhat of a difficult decision to make. What roster move do you make to clear a spot for Dice-K? The guys who would seem to be potentially affected are Penny, Masterson, Jones and Lopez. Lopez could very well lose his job to Jones. Penny could lose his rotation spot to Masterson. They could keep Lopez and send Jones back to Pawtucket. They could DFA Lopez and make Penny a long reliever. What would you do?

I'll go the unpopular route and say Jones gets sent back to Pawtucket, and not just because that's exactly what is going to happen.

Lopez will get the chance to redeem himself much past the middle of May. If he gets cut, he probably won't get cut until the middle of July at the earliest.

add me to the team, DFA lopez, his command of his pitches has dropped significantly. Hunter jones has been a pleasant surprise and is capable of throwing 2 innings if needed. Lopez just puts too many hitters on base. And oh yeah, hunter can get you a strikeout more readily than lopez. Lopez must really hit his spots to be successful. I can also see the sox sticking with lopez, but i hope not.

Jones goes to AAA. There are no options on Lopeza' date=' so he stays put.[/quote']

Despite the positive stuff Jones has shown (and assuming he continues doing well), he goes back to Pawtucket. That's the way things go. Maybe something else happens to impact the roster situation in the mean time. Who knows? I think Jones brings some good things to the pen. I'd like to see him stick.

Yea, unfortunately I dont think Jones will have enough appearances to force Francona to keep him on the roster

Jones will go to AAA. I would rather see Lopez get DFA'd, but I'm not sold they go that route.

I think Lopez probably has some trade value if they send him to the NL. He's only 31

Only if the NL strike zone is bigger...

Actually Bosox21 has a point. Lopez could at least fetch back a PTBNL on the basis of being an LHP and putting up decent ERA's each of the last 2 years. I mean, look at JC Romero, Lopez is basically the same guy.

Exactly the guy I had in mind.

Lopez has a 2.74 ERA over the previous three seasons. His WHIP sucks but the ERA, his age and the fact that he's a lefty (even though he's worse against lefties) should be enough to fool at least a few GMs.

Typical Lopez outing:

5 pitch walk

single

HBP

1-2-5 double-play

4 pitch walk

pitching change

K by relieving pitcher

Line: 0.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 4.5 WHIP, 2000 doses of pepto, 2500 hershey squirts induced, 7000 thrown remotes, 3 kicked televisions

Bye, Javy.

I would send Lopez down and keep Jones he has been better than Lopez it's as simple as that

Anything would be better than Lopez.

I can only wonder why the hell can't he throw a strike.

It's not as simple as that cause you can't send Lopez down without him clearing waivers first.

Anyone care if he clears waivers? IE, anyone care if we lose him for nothing?

Addition by subtraction. Case closed.

I'd only care cause I feel the Sox could actually get something for him.

Doubtful. He's pretty bad, and I don't think anyone who relies on either statistical analysis or scouting will miss this. Meanwhile, he has a chance to pitch meaningful innings, something that is bad for the team, as they wait for some team get interested. Again, they are better without him on the 25 man roster, so addition by subtraction should apply here.
