I think Gom would really have to go off the deep end to get banned. But if the Yanks come out and sputter like my 1st car's engine, he might take the plunge

I haven't read all of the prior posts, and don't care to, but here's a thought from the hip...while one of the metrics being discussed here may be more accepted in the stat community, I suppose that so long as ALL players are being evaluated based upon the same criteria, either one would result in a fair comparison of how often some selected players 'K'. Had the discussion gone to this line of thinking, rather than having our much maligned NY poster argue over the inarguable, we'd all have been better off...tremendously less entertained...but better off.

side comment, didnt feel like making a thread for it. Yankees/Sox rivalry, its really just the fans who do the trash talking. Now the Phillies/Mets rivalry, you keep hearing comments from either team's players. Carlos Beltran said that theyll be keeping tabs on Mr. Cole Hamels
Posted
I can't see how anyone on the Mets team can talk any sort of trash. Especially after the last 2 seasons. Mets players should be silent and concentrated on the task at hand. Not worrying about what Cole Hamels is doing.

Agreed. They may be the team to beat this year in the NL East, but don't talk the talk unless you can walk the walk. Something they haven't been able to do the last 2 seasons.

Speaking of Spring Training and the Red Sox, anyone else looking forward to this Friday on the MLB Network?

The Mets/Phillies thing is a joke. When Hamels made his now infamous comment, it was really kind of baited by the reporter...he lead Hamels down that line then kind of said "would you say they choked" and Hamels hesitated and said "well yeah until they beat us I guess they're chokers."

The media has portrayed it differently in order to sell papers and the players are stupid enough to buy into it and make comments back.

When Curt and Pedro moved on all the heat went out of the Boston-NY rivalry, at least as far as the players go. Now all we have left is Chamberlain throwing at Youkilis' head every chance he gets and A-Rod and Pedroia cheerfully hating each other.. And Varitek of course.

In this era, rivalries are for the fans much more than the players.

I don't think you can say that Curt moved on...he'd still b**** about his Philly days if someone cared enough to ask him...he'll be ripping on New York hoping that people will listen to him well into his retirement...

Know what looked really good on Loretta?

An Astros uniform. It meant he was done with the Sox.

He wasn't really a bad 2B but given the choice of the two I'd rather have had Graffanino.

Posted
I can respect your opinion but I think you're in the minority. Anyone else think the Sox should've kept Graffanino over signing Loretta?
Posted

Graffanino's 2006 OPS for KCR/MIL: .751. Not great, but for a 2B you can live with that.

Loretta's 2006 OPS for BOS: .706. Yuck.

Add to that Loretta's complete lack of anything resembling range and... yeah. Gimme Graf. At least for that one year.

Posted
Fine, but does Graff play in Boston the way he played in KC/Milwaukee after that fairly significant error he committed against Chicago in the prior post-season?
Posted

He's a professional ballplayer -- I see no reason why not.

Graf wasn't moved because we were going to get Loretta, or because of an eggface error. He was moved because we thought our infield at the time of the trade would be Hanley at SS, and Renteria at 2B. Both superior offensive options on paper to Graf. Loretta was a desperation move brought on by the changes caused by the Beckett trade.

And you read about this somewhere? Or did you make it up? Let's check the timeline...

Nov 24, 2005 - Trade Hanley for Beckett - Link

Dec 7, 2005 - Trade Belli for Loretta - Link

Jan 11, 2006 - Graffanino signs with Sox after accepting arb - Link

Graffanino had to accept arb because he was a type A free-agent, and nobody wanted to give up draft picks to sign him. The Beckett trade did not force them to pick up Loretta. At the time, Loretta looked like an upgrade and Graffanino became expendable.

Please just stick to the facts.

Cla Meredith doesnt go bye-bye if the Loretta deal didnt take place

Wait... wait... Loretta has significant utility experience at both SS and 2B and would have slotted well enough into that role.

So you honestly mean to tell me...

..that we traded Graffanino in order to keep ALEX CORA?

Posted
Loretta is dece and can play every day. Graffanino is a role player. There's really no comparison.

Huh? "Dece"...does that mean decent?

Not breaking your balls, I am just curious.

See I'm not down wit dat lingo, yo, although I do know that Pedroia is fukkin dank.

Part of the Q&A centered on Dustin Pedroia and Francona provided the light-hearted moment of the day while relaying a story from last season.

"Last year, I introduced (Ken) Macha to him and Macha was just making conversation with him and said, 'Hey, you remind me of Chad Curtis,'" Francona said."Macha meant it like a real compliment, but Pedey was like, 'Are you (expletive) me?' Maybe he's right? It went from just trying to introduce him to I had to hold Pedey back... Good to not introduce him to anybody."

Absolutely. At the time, Alex Cora could still play a proficient SS, something Loretta (a statue at 2B in your own words) and Graffanino were not capable of.

And if I'm to wait, well I still am, because what you posted in no way reconciles your fabricated reason with the timeline.
