How is there no spot for Abreu? I get the money, but in terms of space on the field I don't get it. You said the same thing about Manny. Granted, we have enough outfielders, but most are bench material. If nady is gone and we don't add another outfielder our OF is Damon, Gardner/Melky, and Swisher. Give me Manny, Abreu, or even Nady and we're straight.

As for Pettitte, I'm tired of this already. This should not still be being dragged out. If he's gonna stay get a f***ing deal done already, if not then move one. I say we go out and sign Sheets (or Lowe if Cashman so wishes, I would prefer Sheets however) TOMORROW and then see how Pettitte reacts. I bet you he comes crying and willing to accept a reduced offer. If he doesn't, fine we still have a solid rotation. If he does, then we can move Joba to the pen and I think that maximizes our staff potential.

s*** just needs to be resolved already!!!

Joba is a waste in the pen. The only way he should end up in the pen is if he cant stay healthy as a starter. He showed he can be an ace as a starter. He throws mid 90s as a starter. He has a plus plus slider and a plus curveball. That kind of repertoire is best used for 200IP than 70IP

Andy Pettitte is a year older than Derek Lowe and both have been inning eaters the past 4 seasons. Derek Lowe just rejected a 3 year 36 million offer and you guys feel Andy Pettitte rejecting 10 million for one season is unwarrented?

Randy Johnson is 45 years old and he just got 8 million. Jamie Moyer is even older and he makes 6.5 million.

How would we feel if Andy Pettitte had been playing for the Dodgers the past 4 seasons and put up Derek Lowe type ERAs because chances are he would have. Meanwhile I guarantee Derek Lowe in NY would have had a ERA above 4. Still think Andy Pettitte isn't worth say....14 million for season? Whats the difference between 10 million and 14 million anyways for the Yankees? They toss out 420+ million for 3 players and can't increase a one year offer for one of there most loyal players by say 6 million....

On that note I hope Pettitte does go to the Dodgers...he would put up great numbers on the West Coast with Joe Torre

I could see them dealing Nady for prospects to save 5.5M or whatever he makes, upping Andys offer to 12M to get him to sign, and pocketing the rest. It's a win-win.

oh cmon, you dont think Petttitte would still be able to take a lead into the 8th with the offense the Yanks have?

The biggest reason the Sox won in 2007 was Okajima and Papelbon shutting it down in the 8th and 9th, you can never underestimate the back-end of a bullpen

And besides, I think Joba is the perfect candidate to take over for Mo in the closers role after he departs in 3 years when his contract is up. I'll be the first to admit, I was always an advocate of Joba becoming a starter, even when he was a dominant setup man, but there are other factors to consider at this point. I'm not saying I would have a problem with him being a starter, but i think we're a better TEAM with him setting up Mariano and eventually taking over for him.

6 IPs five years ago?

And you're the one with more baseball knowledge than anyone on this site? :dunno:

It was an unnecessary jab at his fandom more than anything of substance. I don't think Derek Lowe is that bad, but on the Yankees, I don't think he would fair that well given their incredibly subpar middle infield, and the fact that he's a sinkerball pitcher.

I'm not arguing either side of this, but isn't Wang a sinkerball pitcher and doesn't he do well? And to DipreG's comment, wouldn't the errors not be factored into Lowe's ERA, so if anything the Yankee defense won't affect his ERA.

Tex improves a lot our infield defense. Our infielders don't have to worry much about making a perfect throw to 1B.

You guys talk as if our D in the IF is ridiculously bad. Cano is actually pretty good. As are ARod and Tex. Jeter is the only weak link in our IF

Yeah, anyone who watched Cano a lot last year knows that he's improved tremendously in the field, and I only expect that to continue. Tex=GGer. A-Rod is a solid defensive 3B, and if not for Eric Chavez he should have 2 GGs at the position. I will never understand though how in 2006 (or was it 2005?) A-Rod was so poor in the field after being so good his first few years there. That one still baffles me. He was horrendous that one season in particular.

Beltre is better and also Lowell, but A-Rod is an OK 3B.

Where did I say he was the best, or better than Lowell or even Beltre? He did come in second behind Chavez those 2 years in the voting for Gold Glove though.

Lowe had an ERA of 5 and a half his last season in the American League East. He suddenly shaved 2 runs off his ERA in the NL West for 4 years. He'll put those pounds back on and then some. He sucks. I'm glad we didn't get him.

You know i'm not talking about first base, but the rest of the infield.

Jeter is awful.

Cano and A-Fraud are "ok."

But again, Lowe's DECLINE + AL East OFFENSES + Yanks IF defense= 6.00 ERA.

And to ital, errors are the single worst way to evaluate team defense, so don't rely on errors for anything, we're talking about range and ability, because if his IF can't get to groundballs they should get to, then no error will be charged, but the ERA will jump.
