excellent touch by ESPN to show the bleacher creatures' roll call on split screen. the creatures chanting on one, the individual players responding on another and the game on another

They're going to take down the Stadium piece by piece. By spring 2010, they're going to have a ballfield with the exact dimensions in the exact spot the field is now. Pretty cool that kids will be able to play there.

Yankees are doing this day up right. Letting the fans on the field before the game was a nice touch.

Nice touch with Jeter and the team giving the speech and saluting the fans around the field. Even though I hate them most of the time I'm kind of glad I stayed up to see this.

I think that there were some people that should have been acknowledged on the diamond vision during the pre-game ceremonies, especially considering some of those who were honored and their lack of significance. Nothing against all of the players mentioned as they went position by position, but how does Soriano get a nod and Mickey Rivers gets ignored? I dont get it. And again, that's nothing against Sori.

Same here.

Yeah. Like how Curt Schilling is getting paid $8 million to be a spokesman.

He's hurt, what's your point?

My point is that the entire ceremony was ridiculous.

I thought they did a pretty nice job with it. I liked seeing Paul O'Neill and Bernie come back and get really nice ovations...they're two of the real good guys/hard nosed players that I respected back despite their pinstripes.

What was up with introducing dead players and having someone come out in an old uniform pretending to be that player? That I found a bit odd.

I am in complete agreement. It is not the original stadium. That lasted 50 years. The new stadium lasted 32 years. BFD. They are moving across the street and the new place is going to be called Yankee Stadium. If it was such hallowed ground, they should have continued to play there. To me the night should have been called "Relics and Rubble." Trotting out relics like Moose Skowron...who cares? BTW Was Tony Kubek there? I didn't notice him. I guess the Steinbrenners are still mad at him because he refused to be a Yankee shill. If so, it wasn't very classy to continue a grudge against on of your past champions.

Never went to Yankee Stadium, but to sum it up from what I've heard, lots of history, smells of flat beer and urine. Looking forward to seeing the new stadium tho.

I heard there was no mention of Torre during the video montage.... Real classy Hank. Seriously, if he is that immature and petty, the Yanks are in alot of trouble. I say it's more likely he runs them into the ground before they win another Championship LOL

No one asked the question last night - if the current YS is such a great place, and such hallowed ground, and meets the needs of the Yankees, why are they moving into a new ballpark to which NYC taxpayers are footing the bill, which has come under federal investigation?

The question has been answered plenty of times. Do we really need to go over it again?

I didn't like that at all. I loved that they got the original 1922 AL Champions pennant and laid it out in the black seats, but the "ghosts" were a little unnecessary.

Wow...even now, when one of the greatest stadiums in sports history, if not the greatest, is shutting down, you Red Sox fans are petty.

I've never been to Fenway, but I'd love to see it. I would have nothing for respect for the park if I was there for the last game.

What I had hoped is what I suggested earlier before the season started. The Yankees and Red Sox should have switched the series in August with the last series, so the last game of the year would have been at Yankee Stadium.

Let's face it. The Red Sox are a big part of what makes Yankee Stadium so great. The reverse is true for Fenway. It should have been the Red Sox and Yankees that closed out the new stadium.

Stop being petty and give the Stadium some credit.

Your own manager has a sense of baseball history. I wish more of you would take your que from hm.

It's a building. It has no meaning to me at all. The new ballpark will be called Yankee Stadium and will be across the street. The field dimensions will be identical and the new stadium will be better in every way. This self-indulgent nostalgia was a brilliant move by the Yankee organization to make tons of money on events like last evening and memorabilia like seats etc. Management has no emotional attachment to the stadium, but they played the nostalgia card on their sucker fans. I have no emotional attachment to Fenway. If a new improved ballpark with identical field dimensions could be built across the street and it would be called Fenway Park, I'd be first on the line to swing the wrecking ball. It's just a building.

Sorry, but I think that any fan of baseball in general has to have some level of appreciation for Yankee Stadium and the events that went on there last night as well as the last 85 years. Sure, it is just a building, and sure, the new stadium will be wonderful. But it won't be the same. Last night, the last chapter of that book was written and the book closed. I don't care who you are or what team you are a fan of but last night was a special night for all baseball fans, no matter what team you root for. And I am going out on a limb here, but I can't see how any fan of baseball couldn't appreciate what happened last night. Just try to put the shoe on the other foot for a sec....the responses ,no doubt ,would be different if we were talking about Fenway.

As Mr. Crunchy would say, Fenway seats were built for 1918 sized asses.

I love Fenway, but it's a pit. I'd love to push the button on it's implosion.

Where I differ from most Sox fans is that I don't care if they build a new stadium with different dimensions, so long as they build a field and form a team that work together, similar to the how Yankee Stadium has the short RF porch and the Yanks seek players that can capitalize on it.

The current stadium is nothing like the old stadium. Even the dimensions are not the same. That's why I don't understand the big nostalgia angle.

look, there are many people who will always cherish Yankee Stadium and see it as much more than a building. They see it as hollowed ground where great moments happened for 85 years and want to either mourn its closing or celebrate its existence. its their right to deal with it as they see fit

for those that feel otherwise, there was the Packers and Cowboys on last night too
