Joba is a very good pitcher, but he's not without weaknesses. Watch Joba in the second, fifth, and (if he makes it that far) seventh innings tonight. For whatever reason, that's where he's been having trouble. Pitches 26-50 are Boston's best window of opportunity.

In nine starts Joba has earned only a 1-1 record. He's started only three road games, and only one AL road game. He pitched in Toronto, losing 5-0, allowing 3 ER in 6.2 IP.

In 57 fly balls allowed, Joba has only yielded 3 HR. That's low, and that's luck: he should've yielded six-odd, and that would've substantially jacked up his ERA.

Boston is 36-11 at home this season. Josh Beckett is pitching. Boston is 8-2 in Beckett's last 10 home starts.

From the BDD:

"I've known myself as Joba since I was born. My niece was unable to pronounce Justin, so she'd call me that. Nobody knew my real name until I graduated from high school, when my dad put it in the yearbook. Now there's nothing that could make me switch back. It'll never happen. No, sir." -- Justin "Joba" Chamberlain, ESPN The Magazine, 7.28.08

Manny scratched

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff July 25, 2008 04:30 PM

After being penciled into his regular cleanup spot earlier in the afternoon, Manny Ramirez has now been scratched from tonight’s lineup.

In his meeting with the media, Red Sox manager Terry Francona, who had Manny in his original lineup for tonight’s series opener against the Yankees, said Manny’s knee was still bothering him from time to time (Ramirez also missed Wednesday’s game with a sore knee) and that the he had told Manny to tell him if he couldn’t play tonight

I'm not so sure, with Coco's glove and Beckett pitching. Let's track the fly balls. Let's track Coco at the plate.

I remain upbeat.
