http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/logos/38x45/bos_38x45.gif #19 Josh Beckett, RHP (2-1, 5.12)

Scouting Report:

Angels: Weaver was his own worst enemy against the Royals, his fielding error on a throw at first base costing him an unearned run after he'd yielded two runs on five hits in the first inning. He settled down to hang up four zeros, but the damage had been done. Weaver has only four strikeouts in his past 11 2/3 innings, two subpar efforts following two good ones. He's 0-1 in two career starts at Fenway Park with a 7.36 ERA, and is 0-2 overall against the Red Sox in four outings with a 4.70 ERA.

Red Sox: The ace is settling in nicely after starting the season on the disabled list. Beckett has defeated the Yankees in his last two starts. Most recently, he pitched the Sox to a 7-5 win in New York by allowing three runs over eight innings. Beckett has six walks and 16 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings and is holding opponents to a .200 average. The Angels remember Beckett well from the postseason, when he fired a complete-game, four-hit gem against them in Game 1 of the Division Series.

Stiff neck? Jesus, I thought he just had the flu. Lame. The one game i get to watch this week and its going to be david pauley. If this stiff neck is serious, we're in trouble.

Eh, 1.17 ERA at pawtucket. He knows how to do something right. We'll win anyways, we're hot as hell and we have the angels number.

Leave David Pauley alone. He had that one sweet start in the stadium and... just leave him alone! He's a human being!! *cue crying*

Beckett pulled (updated)

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff April 22, 2008 04:18 PM

Josh Beckett has been pulled from tonight's start because of a stiff neck. Beckett had been fighting the same illness that has taken Jason Varitek out of the lineup for the past couple of days.

So the Red Sox, anticipating that there might be a problem, had pulled David Pauley from his start on Monday. He was told to come to Boston last night, where he spent the evening in a hotel. At about 2 p.m. Pauley was told that he wouldn't be needed tonight, then that was reversed around 4 p.m., when Pauley was told that he would be making the emergency start.

The neck issue popped up out of nowhere this afternoon. Manager Terry Francona was actually out watching Mike Lowell take batting practice for the first since since injuring his thumb when the situation with Beckett came up.

The team is not yet sure if Beckett will be skipped in his start or whether he might just be pushed back a few days. We're hoping to get more information later, possibly after tonight's game.

To make room for Pauley on the roster, Joe Thurston was designated for assignment.

The other problem that the Red Sox have right now is that they are short a second catcher. Varitek is still under the weather and, though he did come to the ballpark this afternoon, he was supposed to be heading home before gametime. Had Beckett not come down with the stiff neck, the roster move would have been made for a catcher, which still might happen tomorrow (with the Sox sending Pauley back down to Triple A). So with the two players who have offered to be the emergency catcher both on the disabled list (Alex Cora and Lowell), Francona was in a bind.

Guess who offered?

That's right. Dustin Pedroia.

So, in a pinch, the second baseman will be heading behind the plate.

I absolutely love Dustin, the Ultimate Dirt Dog!

f***' date=' Pauley.[/quote']

Relative to a healthy Josh Beckett? Yeah, but I don't want Beckett starting injured. I'd rather that he miss one turn than try to pitch while his mechanics were messed up.

Relative to our other pitchers? Probably, but Boston has a good staff.

Relative to the rest of MLB? Nah.

Look, Pauley got screwed by his defense when he started three games for Boston in 2006. You expect 70% of the balls in play to be fielded. Pauley had 27% line drives, which might alter that estimate to the 65% range, not the 70% range. But Boston only fielded 52.4% of the balls in play for Pauley in his 2006 cup of coffee. This was the 2006 defense, so it's almost understandable--but that won't happen over three starts with the 2008 defense.

In 2006, Pauley had a 4.14 FIP and a 4.77 xFIP. His 2007 AAA ERA was a 4.33. This year he's been doing great in Pawtucket. It's reasonable that he might do well--he pitched well against the Yankees in his 2006 work, so we can expect him not to wilt under pressure.

I counsel guarded optimism. I'm looking forward to the game!

Player to watch: if Pauley's on his game, he induces ground balls, so Julio Lugo's got to come through for Boston to prevail.

He also played three good offense... 2 of them being in the top 6 in the League -- the Yankees and Rangers. Besides, 2 ER in 6.2 innings in Yankee stadium isn't such a bad performance. He'll be fine tonight.

To the contrary: I typed what Boston needs.

Even in 2008, Lugo gets it right 91.4% of the time on ground balls. Asking for a half-dozen consecutive accurate throws doesn't seem like so much in that respect. :D

The Blue Jays were 7th-best, too, with above-average hitters at every position except SS (and, maybe, 2B).

My question is' date=' where's Bartolo Colon? I really haven't heard anything on him since spring training.[/quote']

Colon had some very good starts in Pawtucket but had an oblique injury (I believe) so they shut him down for a while. He's just recently started playing catch. They are being pretty careful with him. He could possibly help down the road and may be a great bargin (fingers crossed) :)

Damn flu!!!!

Delcarmen sick

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff April 22, 2008 06:11 PM

Manny Delcarmen has left the building. He's suffering from the same flu-like symptoms as Jason Varitek, who is out of today's lineup.

I had read that Beckett had the flu, too. Perhaps the neck thing is from tossing his cookies all day. Or, perhaps, it's just cooler to miss a start with a stiff neck than saying you have the trots? Can you imagine s***ing your home whites while on the mound? :o
