There goes Holier-than-thou Curt Schilling, flapping his lips about Clemens. If Schilling was in The Sopranos, he would have been whacked along time ago, and buried next to Eric Mangini. Curt, you don't know all the facts, just shut the hell up. You talk too much.

So far I would say Curt is holier than Clemens, you know, given that Clemens is named and Schilling is not.

I agree that he should just shut up, mostly because I think he makes himself and--to a lesser degree--the Red Sox, look bad at times. However, I appreciate his candor.

What I would love to see is the Red Sox coming out and saying "We have a no HGH, no steroid, no stimulant policy on this club. Each contract comes with an automatic cancellation clause for PED use. Yes, we are going to spend a shitload of money, and we are going to win, but we will have independent testers and will be a quality product you can expose your kids to".

Because the player's union and owners wouldn't tolerate it, it won't happen. Statements like Schiling's, while brash, are exactly the type of swift justice and public shaming that players should get for using and should become a regular part of the game. If Peter Gammons says it, or Rob Neyer says it, who cares? For what its worth, even though nobody would care, neither of them are bold enough to go hard after PED users.

Racism and homophobia largely disappear if people make bold proclaimations about it being morally unacceptable when they see it. Similarly, by publically making an example out of the guys who have benefited most from steroids--and thus screwed everyone from the fans to his 'clean' opponents--it may serve to deter others.

The problem needs to be approached on multiple fronts if PEDs are ever going to be out of the game.

That said, is everyone convinced that Schill never used? Why, exactly, did he testify before that Congressional panel a few years ago? I remember he wasn't suspected at the time, but he was the only person whose role wasn't clear to me.

I'd bet my shirt he'll link to 38pitches.com, and if you read Curt's blog, it's not what I'd call spouting off. Getting an insider's perspective, even from a sanctimonious source, is more interesting than the thought's of the taint.

This is one reason I hated the guy for a while. I hate his mouth and ego.

It's not his ego, it's just his mouth. I like Schilling, and I agree with most of the things he talks about, but he's not in any position to really do anything, other than give an opinion, which for the most part just makes him look like a loud mouthed ass, in which sometimes he is. If he were in some sort of position of power, as in MLB brass it would be different, but his bitching isn't going to help anything. Sure he's getting his point across but at the end of the day can anyone point out what good it does?

  What a comedian!

Behind the Bag is a sardonic reference to Vin Scully's play call when Buckner made that infamous error.

Do you know who those guys are?

Or are you a Pink Hat?

WTF is a play call? Sardonic? If you substituted the sard for moro we'd be on the same page. Nothing like a MFY thinking he's being clever. And, yet kinda sad at the same time. Ya might want to test the waters sport before you swim in naked. Please explain in detail your obviously vast knowledge of the game in question. You've heard of Vin Scully? Wow. You must really be special.

WTF do you think Vin Scully's play call was? Think about it for a minute.......If you don't understand the word sardonic, look it up. "Test the waters" lol

Oooooh, the talksox.com message board! So grown-up and overwhelming!

Knuckleheads.

Are you Red Sox fans or just a bunch of keyboard warriors?

Do I gain more credibility if I post more?

You guys are so cool....:D

Hey, let's do a little word association. I'll say a word, you then say the first word that comes to mind...

Ready?

TOMMY LASORDA.

Yes, I remember that call, and the use of sardonic by Timmy the Taint is funny. Cynically mocking? Not quite. Try ebullient. Now, sardonic would be an apt description of the feedback in this thread.

So Taint, tell me, why did you choose as your forum name a reference to Bill Buckner? Are you one of the following:

- one of those fringe Sox who think HE lost that game in 1986?

- a Yankee fan?

I'd be interested in what led you to choose that name.

I went with a third option, Dodgers fan.

I think he's more of a Red Sox fan in the vein as that THEO APOLOGIST guy. Self-hating, confrontational, and holier-than-thou.

Back to the topic at hand....

Curt has every right to voice his opinion on the Mitchell Report.....the problem is his transparency. He continues to deny having any first hand knowledge of anyone using PEDs in MLB. I find that very hard to accept. His posting on 38pitches was also somewhat slanted to fit the Sox/Yankees rivalry. He states "Now I, like every other Yankee, Clemens fan am faced with a dilemma." If memory serves me right, Clemens also pitched for the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Astros and still has a following in those cities. Clemens is not under contract with the Yankees, so why the mention of the Yankees?

If Curt wishes to post his opinion in his blog, on his website, more power to him, however, if he wishes to find some type of positive outcome for the game and its purging of PEDs, maybe he shouldn't be so biased in his opinion and leave out the pro-Sox slant.

It's probably hard to see what others are doing when he has a hot dog in one hand, a bag of chips in the other and a feedbag strapped to his fat face.

I know it doesn't show, but I kinda like the guy.

Is this even a question? He pitched for the Yankees last season.

In many Boston fans' opinions, he f***ed them over. Ditto Toronto.

The Yankees really have no basis of complaining because he came back to them last season, albeit for millions of dollars. The mention of the Yankees is contingent on the fact that he pitched for them last season.

Well, if Curt Schilling is the one that is going to bring about those changes, it speaks to the lack of confidence that everyone should have in the people in charge of baseball.

Schilling has the right to say what he wants. It may not be reasonable, but it's his opinion.

Kudos to Schilling for speaking out. Many others in baseball are probably thinking the same thing, but don't have the balls to say it publicly, because Clemens is a large intimidating man. Curt is bigger and he doesn't intimidate. He puts himself out there in a genuine way and takes plenty of knocks for being honest. Clemens has never been hon est or genuine.

Schilling has a lifetime pass from me for pitching with in his sutured ankle in 2004.

When Dan Duq let Roger go he said that Roger was done, or so I've been told by a older fan than I. So he went up to Toronto and started throwing 99, 98 again. So I would guess that he started using them up there.

EDIT: I think this is it.

Notoriously, Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette said Clemens was in the "twilight of his career" following four consecutive seasons, 1993-96, in which the pitcher was a mediocre 40-39 with few of the eye-popping statistics that had become his norm. The Red Sox opted not to re-sign him following the 1996 season. However, the full quote from which "twilight" is excerpted was not entirely negative, and also referred to Red Sox management's stated hope that Clemens would spend his entire career with Boston. .

I don't care if an athlete is a bit of jerk, as long as he's honest. I'm sick and tired of canned, moronic responses from athletes when the topic of steroids is concerned. Hearing one guy say what some many of us are thinking and what so many athletes are AFRAID to say is great.

I agree with Schilling.

Oh, yeah... Clemens is a dickhead, too!

Schilling has a lifetime pass from me for giving up pitching with in his sutured ankle in 2004

well luca

i couldnt have said it better but i too have started threads bashing this guy for his opinions

in my world of team sports guys like schill come in 2 flavors

they got the big mouth and they dont back it up

or

they got the big mouth and back it up

the latter are few and far between and schill has been the best money pitcher since babe ruth here in boston..when he came here he did that ford commerial announcing he was coming to boston to end an 86 yr old curse.

he put the pressure on himself and delivered

he wins 20 during the year and game 6 in the bronx under the most amazing conditions

he made dreams come true at the possible expense of his career and thats commitment my friends.

but the mouth and the personal s*** he says about other ballplayers is nauseating me and i suspect his manager as well as a few teamates..

hey

i can deal with the ******** providing hes still pitching well but there are going to be a lot of happy people when he finally does lose it or packs it in.
