UPDATE: Heard EEI is reporting it as finalized.

Congrats on the deal, I expect the Sox to be good for at least 2 more championships till the end of the decade.

EDIT: With this thing finally over with. I'd rather the Yanks just stay pat and go with what we got. I think Haren is a real good pitcher but while I can somewhat uncomfortably resign myself to trading Hughes for Johan, there's no way I can accept trading hughes for Haren.

EDIT 2: Can this be compared to the KG trade? wow

If it really is Lester, Coco, Lowrie, Bowden/Masterson I will be happy with the deal.

The $ it will cost however will be up there, but o well not my money. Hopefully Beckett dosn't get contract envy.

Ya i don't see anything on the big sites yet, and I am listning to espnradio and haven't heard anything new... Hopefully something solid comes out soon...

I just heard WEEI report that the Red Sox and Twins are CLOSE to completing a deal for Santana. They haven't finalized it yet. They also reported that according to Edes at the Globe, the Twins were satisfied with the medical reports for Jon Lester. If the deal includes Lester the Sox would also trade Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson. If they don't take that deal they would probably take Jacoby Ellsbury, Lowrie and Masterson.

I can't wait until this things is completed. I don't want to see the Red Sox lose Ellsbury, but I'd love to see Santana in the pitching rotation. If Epstein can pull-off the trade to get Santana and keep Ellsbury, I call him a genius! This is going to be a lot of fun!

To get the best LH pitcher in baseball, and not give up your 2 biggest prospects is big.

But it was said earlier before all the meetings that the Twins had a history of getting lower level prospects instead of the main guys.

"If the Red Sox get Santana," one NL executive told ESPN's Jason Stark, "they might be the best team in the history of the frigging universe."

We all know how good teams look on paper, they still have to play the game, I would say our chances increase.

yeah,

here's to hoping for a major letdown year from Beckett and an injury to Johan if he goes to your team :D Could also go for a Ortiz stomach virus for 6 months.

Beckett should be the first person they call and let him know he's the team's #1 and the door is open to discuss a contract extension.

You don't talk contract with him yet. Johan still only makes 13.5M this seaon. You extend Beckett next season or 2009 if he continues to pitch the way he has.

Basically says same thing as before. Except it adds that Minny asked the Red Sox for there final best deal that included Lester. Said something should get done by today.

NASHVILLE -- The Red Sox [team stats] and Twins will resume “serious negotiations” later this morning on a blockbuster deal that would bring ace Johan Santana to the Red Sox, according to a baseball source involved in the negotiations.

The package of players the Twins would receive is still in flux and there are two packages under discussion, with still varying mixes of players in each. The first deal would include left-hander Jon Lester [stats] and center fielder Coco Crisp [stats], the other one is headed by center field prospect Jacoby Ellsbury. The Twins are still deciding which one they prefer. The Red Sox have successfully held the line on not including Ellsbury in a package with either Lester or Clay Buccholz, their other top starter.

This deal won't really be done until Santana has his contract with the Sox extended, at which time you can then immediately start thinking about a Beckett extention as well. Beckett was locked up by the June after his trade, certainly the same will be done with Santana. I think Beckett makes 10 next year followed by 12 then an option in 2010. I don't think it's too early or he's too old to be thinking about keeping him around longer or keeping him happy.

Letting him know the door is open isn't the same as throwing out his current contract.

I still say let him pitch this yr, then extend him next yr. Schill and others will be off the books and the extension wouldn't be such a hit towards the payroll. But whatever, ifit brings more Championships then so be it...

You are kidding - right? You want Santana for one year - loose all our best prospects and watch the Yankees scoop him up for a huge multi-year deal?

12:50 p.m., from Peter Gammons

• The Twins and Red Sox are supposed to meet this afternoon to continue discussions on the Johan Santana deal. Sources indicate the Twins are still trying to decide between a 3-for-1 trade for center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, infielder Jed Lowrie, pitching prospect Justin Masterson and a 4-for-1 swap that substitutes lefty starter Jon Lester and center fielder Coco Crisp for Ellsbury.

So its true. The twins value both Lester and Ellsbury higher than Hughes. What idiots.
