Who's on Third?

  1. 1. Who's on Third?

    • Mike Lowell - Overpay the WS MVP, even at the risk of decreased performance.
      17
    • Alex Rodriguez - Yeah, it's a lot of money, but it's only money. He's the best player in baseball.
      16
    • Trade stud prospects for Miguel Cabrera. He's a once in a generation talent offensively.
      1
    • Kevin Youkilis. Solve the problem internally and put Chris Carter at 1B.
      0
    • Kevin Youkilis. Trade for an outside 1B.
      3
    • Eric Chavez/Miguel Tejada. Take a flier on a veteran.
      1
    • There's another option we haven't thought of.

Rolen- Pass

Johnson- Pass

D. Johnson and Blanton isn't a bad package to consider, all really depends on what it will cost us in prospects. Have any guess as to what that might be?

I would like to think both could be had without dealing Buchholz or Ellsbury.

Lowrie/Bowden/Masterson for Johnson and Blanton?

I take that deal. Blanton has stud qualties, and be a nice 2,3 on this team. And Johnson provides a decent bat and glove.

Throw Blanton into the rotation, what would they do with Lester for the yr? I guess Lester could be the spot starter of 1st choice of someone is injured.

Honestly, he'd probably be gone in that deal too. I dunno if Lowrie/Bowden/Masterson is enough to get that done.

Maybe substitute Anderson for Masterson, throw in Lester, and make a big run at Dan Haren?

I guess it is fun to throw around all kind of trade ideas like playing a MLB 2K game. In reality - GM's rarely do a blockbuster trade unless there is a definite need that they have to fulfil. That's the missing part between a fantasy and realistic trade. For example - why would anyone get rid of their stud players just because we need a third baseman? They will expect to squeeze as much as possible because they have us by our balls.

That's why trade is not a good option if you have a weakness.

What? They have Daric Barton who can play 1B for them, and Chavez isn't going anywhere because of the contract.

Why doesn't this deal make sense, o wise one?

It makes sense on paper - does that mean it can happen?

We can try to talk about solving global warming and war in Iraq - etc. And that's what discussion forum is for. Not that anyone would act on them.

Just setting expectations. I would love to do some trades you guys are speculating. I doubt any of them will actually happen.

If it makes sense on paper, doesn't that sort of imply that it can work in real life?

MC if it doesn't cost Buccholz/Ellsbury. That being said and not likely to happen.

So heres my option, wait for one of the LA teams to unload prospects for MC. Then the team getting MC will be set at 3B. If its LAD then try and trade for Laroche, if its LAA then maye Wood. After that I like Kilo's idea of going to Oak and trying to get D. Johnson and Haren/Blanton. Move Youk to 3B and play Johnson at 1B while getting another SP.

Ok, so now it looks like we might have missed both...

So now what?

I do not think Lowell is worth 4 years. Anyone thinks it is wise to get into the A-Rod bidding wars with the Yankees. I am sure we have the money - but should that be spent somewhere else more prudently?

For once - I would like to get back to the Yankees by out-bidding them. OK - we have done that with Dice-K but even then. This may be the second time we lost out on the best individual player in baseball.

Ya but every time we get out bid, it doesn't usually work out well for the Yanks(Pavano,Damon,Contrares,Clemens, ect).

I think one of the big decisions we have to make is that do we want to win this year or we want to win multiple championship in future years. If we go the Yankee way( try to buy championships) - we may have to outbid them(tall task) or sacrifice prospects. I would personally rather not do that. I am willing to let our prospects sort out the 1st base position - even though that may cost us the play-offs this year.

I like the way there doing it now.

Rumor is if the Yanks sign Arod they will still go after Lowell to play 1B and obviously take him away form oston a la Damon. If this happens tho we get the Yanks 28th overall pick.

We gave the starting 2B job to Dustin Pedroia. How'd that work out?

We gave Pedroia .285/.345/.361 boots to fill. We'd be giving Lowrie .324/.378/.501 boots to fill. If Pedroia faltered, it was ok, because Loretta was nothing special either...but if Lowrie were to faulter, it'd be a huge blow to the offense.

What was Lowell's offensive line in 2006?

What was his second half BABIP?

The White Sox just threw a lot of money at Juan Uribe, Mark Buehrle, and Jermaine Dye.

Why do people think they'll move Konerko for anything less than top tier prospects?

They hardly threw a lot of money at Uribe...one year at 4.5 mil?

Dye and Beuhrle were shopped around at the deadline and not traded because no one wanted to give up the prospects to get them. They were re-signed, because, why let them go for nothing but a draft pick or two? I'm sure they would deal them, too, if teams were willing to give up worthy prospects.

As for Konerko, he's due 36 mil until his contract runs out and he's 32 so I really don't see why they wouldn't listen to offers for him. And considering the Sox could have probably had Dye at the deadline for a deal centered around Bowden, I'm confident that a similar deal would at least spark up some interest for Konerko.

He seems to be an even medium between A-Rod and Cabrera...would probably hit 35 HR and OPS .850 with the Monster, but at about 2/5 of A-Rod's price and not nearly the prospects required to land Cabrera.

Good point regarding the FO intentions over the next year or two.

Contrary to a post I saw in this forum recently which stated the Sox goal was to contend every year, I recall (sorry, don't have a link) Theo saying the Sox could NOT contend every year, not if they were to reach/operate within organizational goals/constraints...which clearly includes the long-term financial consequences of any personnel moves. He indicated they've looked at the organization and its goals, top to bottom, and determined they could go for it approx. 7 out of every 10 years...which means re-tooling every once in a while.

The question would be does 2008 loom as a re-tooling year? I would say no, this team as presently constituted, the 3b situation notwithstanding, is poised for another run and its quite possible that the pitching staff can be even better than last year.

They go for it again in 2008.

He had an OPS+ 24 points higher than Loretta.

The second half BABIP is irrelevant, the final production is the final production.

Actually, Lowell's high BABIP is very relevant, strongly suggesting a regression to his age-adjusted career norms next year.

Take that away...take away, possibly, his Fenway Park home field advantage...Lowell isn't going to look as good next year. In the wrong ballpark, he could become an epic tale of collapse.

It's relevant to Lowell's future production yes, but I was saying that it isn't relevant in terms of replacing Lowell because his final numbers are what they are regardless of how they were achieved.

We cannot go into the season with Jed Lowrie as our starting third baseman. He isn't ready (See the .163 AVG in 98 AB's in the AFL and I know that he is working on fielding, but still, .163?). I really like him, but we simply cannot start him at 3B to open the season.
