Who's on Third?

  1. 1. Who's on Third?

    • Mike Lowell - Overpay the WS MVP, even at the risk of decreased performance.
      17
    • Alex Rodriguez - Yeah, it's a lot of money, but it's only money. He's the best player in baseball.
      16
    • Trade stud prospects for Miguel Cabrera. He's a once in a generation talent offensively.
      1
    • Kevin Youkilis. Solve the problem internally and put Chris Carter at 1B.
      0
    • Kevin Youkilis. Trade for an outside 1B.
      3
    • Eric Chavez/Miguel Tejada. Take a flier on a veteran.
      1
    • There's another option we haven't thought of.

This is kind of an out of my ass idea, but what about Brad Wilkerson?

I understand that he's been injury plagued the past few years, that he's 30 and seemingly on the downward portion of his career production curve, but he could come cheaply and be a potential veteran re-enforcement for Carter at first. He could also be a corner outfield guy and he's played a bunch of games in center, too (in a pinch).

At the very least he's a better option than Hinske for lefty power bat and he could be a bargain.

Just for fun, I looked up Miguel Tejada's career splits for his numbers at Fenway Park:

.305 / .364 / .520

Not terrible, and you'd have to imagine his wrist injury sapped his power a bit. I'd be shocked if the seemingly OBP heavy Red Sox front office made a move for "Mr. Swing at everything." (as dubbed by Billy Beane) but they may smell a value here too. He'll turn 32 early in 2008 so he's clearly in the decline phase but he's hardly old. On another note he'll make $13 million in '08 and $13 million in '09 (about what the Sox were willing to pay for Lowell) so if the Orioles kick in a little salary relief he may be worth some prospects. He also has stated he wants out of Baltimore on several occasions so I'd imagine he'd agree to play third for the defending World Champs.

That having been said, would the Orioles agree to sending their best hitter to a division rival?

What about Tony Clark? Had a decent year with pop as a "backup" to Conor Jackson this season, could serve as a platoon partner to Chris Carter.... on that note-- what about Conor Jackson himself? I heard the Diamondbacks had soured on him a bit and the Red Sox know their GM pretty well....

Any idea whether or not the Mets would part with Fernando Tatis? ;)

tony clark??

we already waived his ancient ass....6 years ago? i think

fernando tatis?

chris carter??

evidently carter cant catch throw or run

if he could arizona wouldve used him with his impressive hitting stats

the other 2 men arent worthy of discussion

The reconciliation with Rodriguez has not lessened the Yankees' interest in Mike Lowell, who was the World Series MVP for Boston.

The Yankees initially contacted Lowell as a possible replacement at third base, but now their interest in him is at first base.

"The Yankees have engaged us," said Lowell's agent, Seth Levinson.

Lowell has a three-year offer for $45 million from the Red Sox, but he is seeking four years.

MC, Atkins, Blaylock, Laroche, Tejada, Beltre, Crede or Fields... Just some names that have een put out there as possibly available.

Rotoworld says Red Sox are interested in Crede - not too excited about that.

He's in his contract year though and if he stays healthy, i think he'd be a good fit in the lineup. He's cheaper than anyone else to get. Unless Mike Lamb's an option.

Joe Crede, with the career .305 OBP. Good fit?

I can't imagine the Sox getting anyone for a power position with an OBP that astoundingly low. There would be no excuse, as it would go against their entire philosophy. At least the players they have had who have not been stacked with power numbers have the ability to get on base. Crede--who has some power--really can not get on base consistently. Next.

I understand Lowells second half slump was masked by a high second half BABIP and he still generated very little power and was almost a singles hitter in the second half, but I'd still like him back. Despite whatever the numbers say, Lowell is an outstanding defensive 3rd baseman, and if he can come back for 3 years 15 mil, great. I like him at 2, but I'd be O.K. with the third year because as long as he is on the field his defense will help us out and hey, maybe he pulls a dwight evans and even ages well?

If he doesn't come back, I like Jed Lowrie at either corner position. Hes tall enough and the only knock in his defense is his range, but being at a corner position shouldn't be too demanding range wise and hes got decent hands so I like him to make that transition.

Just say no to both Rolen and Johnson. Rolen's shoulder is shredded and Johnson is coming off a major injury and is made of glass anyways.

Besides, isn't Johnson not going to be ready for next season?

What about Dan Johnson in Oakland, and package him with Joe Blanton?

Thats a great idea. I don't know if we need a Blanton though, and Beane LOVES his durability, but that would certainly be a good move. I'd think though, if we acquired Blanton, it would put a Lester or Buchholz on the block.

I'm dreading them putting Youkilis at 3rd and Chris Carter at 1st which means that's probably what they'll do

You keep saying what you don't want them to do. What should they do?

Posted
Nick Johnson anyone? He's very very good when healthy.

The good:

Johnson is a decent fielder if I recall and a very solid OBP guy. In 2006 he was second in the NL in pitches seen per AB.

The Bad:

Still hasn't recovered from a broken femur suffered in Sept. 2006. Assuming he recovers from the serious injury he suffered there still will be questions of his ability to stay healthy...I think he's been on the DL 5 times already.

Not a current solution.

I don't know what they should do. Ideally, I'd still see Mike Lowell at third but I don't really want to see him at third in 2011. But I do know I want to see something better than moving the best defensive first baseman in baseball to third and Washington's future considerations at first

As bosoxnation said... Miguel Tejada, Garrett Atkins (reports have been out there that Rockies might shop him around), Adam Dunn (Though he has no trade clause until June 15), Eric Chavez, Dan Johnson, Hank Blalock, Joe Crede, Conor Jackson, Nick Johnson, Scott Rolen

miggy tejada from the o's at ss

Your first post was really much funnier. ;)

Don Orsillo: "And the pitch...it's a routine grounder to shortstop, and Cabrera has it...no! He drops it! He picks it up and throws...it's in the seats! His throw his in the seats!"

Jerry Remy: "Well, yes, it's a run-scoring throwing error, but I just think that Miggy's been getting to more balls recently."

Don Orsillo: "Well, Jerry, you could say that...he only had 12 throwing errors in April, but he's already up to 15 in May with almost a week left in the month. I think that he's regaining some of that range that he had when he was coming up through the minor leagues with the Marlins before he was old enough to vote. Tina, you were talking with Miggy before the game. What did he have to say about the challenges of playing shortstop again?"

Tina Cervasio: "Don, I asked Miguel Cabrera that before the game today, and here's what he had to say:"

Miguel Cabrera: "Ummm...this is...umm...harder than I thought that I'd be...I mean..."

ive seen some hot shot kids with bad raps before

but nothing like the label on that kid who has a s*** load of accomplishments at 24 yet seems destined to be doing donut commercials with carlo baerga and snacks garces

Where ever he goes Cabrera needs to skip quite a few meals, he's heading into to Sidney Ponson Land. Tejada could afford to shed a few lbs. as well.

Apparently noone is posting to Red Sox forum - tired of seeing the thread about Youk's beard or whatever.

Lowell close to signing 3 years with Sox per Buster Olney.

Lowell close to rejoining Red Soxposted: Monday, November 19, 2007 | Feedback | Print Entry

Heard early this morning: Mike Lowell is close to re-signing with the Red Sox, for three years. Assuming that the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed without a final hangup, the heavy lifting of three major players in the AL East -- Boston, New York and Toronto -- is all but over.

The Red Sox will look around for a deal involving center fielder Coco Crisp in all likelihood, look to add some bullpen depth, and they would probably explore any serious market involving Johan Santana.

The Yankees would jump into a Santana bidding war, but short of that, the most pressing matter for them is Andy Pettitte's pending decision on whether to retire; if he does, the Yankees' rotation will have a huge hole that will need to be filled. So they, too, will look seriously at adding a veteran pitcher like Santana -- the only scenario in which they would part with Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy, in all likelihood. The Yankees also need to re-sign Luis Vizcaino, and they are among the teams talking about signing Ron Mahay.

Yankees tried pretty hard to drive up his price - Theo did not blink.

I saw somewhere that the offer is 3 years 33 mill. Thats as reasonable as it gets - I will be happy if we get 2 good offensive years out of this and another defensive late innings replacement year.
