NESN Sports Desk: Red Sox A-Rod's 1st Choice

Tonight NESN reported that A-Rod is saying the Red Sox are his 1st choice of the teams he would like to sign with. He said they have the best chance of winning multiple championships. Epstein said he hasn't spoken with Boras and that their priority is to resign Mike Lowell.

 

Even though a line-up of Ellsbury, Pedroia, A-Rod, Ortiz, Ramirez, Drew, Youk, Tek, & Lugo looks pretty powerful, I prefer Mike Lowell. Signing A-Rod could create a lot of problems on a team that has great chemistry. Big Papi, Manny Ramirez and V-Tek have all been vocal about resigning Lowell. I bet they really wouldn't be happy with A-Rod on their team. Although, these guys are obviously all professionals and pros play to their ability regardless of soap opera stuff.

 

I felt that the V-Tek, A-Rod scuffle in 2004 was one of the coolest things ever. The Sox really got going from that point forward. I'd hate to see any sting go out of V-Tek's jab to A-Rod's chops. I can just see V-Tek and A-Rod kissing and making-up on opening day...makes me want to puke!

 

Let's resign Lowell!

I would be bothered by the fact that ek seems to have a genuine dislike for ARod. But for that, I would love to have ARod on the team in a lineup with Ortiz and Manny (for one year). I would prefer signing Lowell if the ARod cost would compromise the quality of the team pitching.

Yeah, of course the production in the regular season is fantastic but, what would happen to the guys not getting the money they want? I thought it was already bad with Drew getting his $14-Million or so. Papi's been Mr. Clutch. What kind of money will satisfy him? He's only a $12.5-Million man. Manny's going to be getting $20-Million. I don't know, but if you pay A-Rod between $25 and $30-Million it's going to be hard saying you're out of money when it's time to renegotiate with the rest of the team. A-Rod deserves the upper limits of the salary range for sure, but I just think I'd rather him set the standard somewhere else. I could be wrong...that's a tough bat to pass-up.

chemistry (IMO) is overrated.

 

That having been said, I'd prefer the Sox DON'T sign A-Rod just because $30 million for 12 years (the rumored asking price of Boras) is bound to come back to haunt you. Crap, 30 million for 6 is bound to burn you at some point.

 

Even at an inflated 3 years, $50 million Lowell's a better bargain.

 

But holy crap, can you imagine a lineup with A-Rod, Manny, and Ortiz with Pedroia and Youkilis getting on base at the top?

It sounds to me that this might be one of those rumors to jack up the price. Or it could be a ploy to get the Yanks back in the race, maybe Boras and AROD think that if it seems like the Sox are in the top spot to get him the Yanks will jump back in with a big time offer to keep him out of Boston.

 

 

Either way I don't care, if he really wants to play here then Theo needs to use that to his advantage and make AROD take less money then he would somewhere else. Said along time ago when the whole opt out thing came about that the funniest thing would be for him to opt out of NY and Sign with Boston for less money.

 

As far as having AROD on the team I don't think it will be an issue. With all the s*** that went on in NY the FO and Veteran players might lay down the law as soon as he gets into town. Yes its true him and Tek arent best friends, but if AROD walked up to TEK and said all BS aside I want to win, I think Tek would give him a short leash.

 

Its also been said that Manny, Papi and AROD are all good friends and drove to the AS game together this yr and also had dinner together( read it somewhere, cant remember where but its no BS, it was in an article).

 

Whether AROD comes to Boston or not doesn't concern me as much as it might have at one time. I'll take him if he wants to play in Boston and win, I'll take Lowell if its not for 5 yrs, and Id take MC if it doesn't cost Ellsbury or Buccholz. I was reading random articles and in a few of them it was said the Sox could offer 5 yrs at 150M. And maybe a couple option yrs.

 

The tempting thing for AROD here in this deal is he would become a FA again around the time he could be chasing the HR record. I bet he takes that into serious consideration. And 5 yrs 150M of AROD is not a bad deal at all.

I personally hope the Red Sox sign Arod. Yes, you'll have the best team in baseball next year. Doesn't guarantee a thing, we both have seen it.
