Now....

Call me crazy. Call me insane. However...

After being behind by 14 1/2 games on May 29th....8 games back before the start of play on August 28th....we have closed the gap to 5 games. Can we do it? Yes. Will we do it? I doubt it. However, optimism and love of my team will outweigh reason here.

The Red Sox may be in first place, but they're chasing the Yankees now.

As it stands now....

August 30th:

Yanks trail Red Sox by 5 games.

It's doable but we've already had this conversation so many times. The Yankees aren't consistent and the Red Sox, at their worst, have been a .500 team. If the Red Sox keep on being a .500 team from here on out, the Yankees still have to get hot. Possible but not likely. The other team is winning the wildcard, though... whichever it is. The Yankees got up for this series, the Red Sox did not. The Red Sox seem complacent at this point, even.

I just want the Yankees to get into the playoffs, although it would be nice to win the AL East. Lets be honest, the Red Sox have been a better team than the Yankees this year (records aside), and, in the end, they'll win the division because the Yankees have been too inconsistent.

Do the Yankees present a very difficult matchup for the Red Sox, of course, but the Red Sox have had a better season. The Yankees inconsistent road play will probably cost them the division in the end, but as long as they get into the playoffs, I'll be happy. You just have to get there, then anything can happen.

I don't care. This is the thread for winning the East. I started the Wild Card thread, and I'm a superstitious freak. Plus, what's this board if not for fun? I don't think they'll do it, but why the hell not? If we put some distance between us and the Mariners, why not this thread.

Ya gotta believe.

To be honest, I think I'm more worried about Detroit than Seattle.

Red Sox gave life to the Yanks just like the Yanks gave life to the Tiggers last week.

Don't be shocked if Detroit makes a bit of a run...

Good day for the Red Sox. Even though we both lost, every game off the schedule in which we don't cut the lead simply decreases our chances.

With the Yankees gaining a measure of revenge against the Devil Rays, the Yankees have trimmed the AL East gap to 4.5 games. A loss by the putrid Sox puts the Yankees within serious striking distance at four games.

Accuscore puts the Sox as 70% favorites to win the game.

Predictions hold water. How did that one go of last week the Sox losing 2 of 3 or even being swept by the D-Rays turn out?

Those are my predictions. The prediction I wrote was by Accuscore.

As long as the Orioles and Devil Rays aren't in the playoffs, I like our chances.

Even though we'll get matched up with f***ing Anaheim again to piss me off for a week.

This race is just about over.

.500 ball from here on out for the Red Sox would require the Yankees to go 19-5 from here on out just to tie.

At the start of play today, 9/11, the Red Sox lead in the loss column is four games. Unlikely...but still possible.

This thread...dusted off, and brought back to life.....

The Red Sox simply DO NOT WANT TO WIN THE DIVISION.

Thank you Toronto..thank you Eric Gagne...

But with the Red Sox losing tonight...and the Yankees up 12-0 on the Orioles...the lead is down to two games in the loss column. A tie gives us the division and the extra home game.

Can it be? Could it be? 14.5 games out...and caught in September? We shall see. Assuming the Yankee win [and Okajima and Papelbon aint pitching, so we have a good chance of winning]...the standing look like this at the end of 9/18:

Boston 90-62

Yankees 87-64 2.5 GB

Only two in the loss.

Posted

Yankees next three games:

Brian Burres vs. Andy Pettitte

Roy Halladay vs. C.M. Wang

Shaun Marcum vs. Ian Kennedy

It's much more important for the Yankees to prepare themselves for the playoffs, so it's on the coaching staff to find a medium in terms of how hard you go after the division. If the wild card race is basically settled heading into the final week, and the division is in the balance, the Yanks need to find a way to go for the division without ruining any postseason preparation.

True. Have to give you that. I think our celebration in 2003 was better though. It's one thing to celebrate after a blow out. But to dance around after being 5 outs from losing, and in extra innings...now that was a boogie down from the Bronx. I remember they did the same thing in Flushing in 1986. What was that...one strike away with no one on?

We can dance if we want to......

lol, what a complete troll comment.

We were three outs from elimination. Won in 12, brought Fenway down.

Then we won in 14, and brought it down again.

Then a dude who can barely f***ing walk beat your ass, and a guy who got booed off them team hit the game winning homerun.

And then we wiped the floor with your sorry asses in game 7.

So yeah, your celebration was great. Especially since you won the WS and everything.

1.5 away from normalcy. What a crazy season.

Look, if it happens, the one thing I beg of you is this: Please don't go crazy on our faces. We'll be hurting, and we're also going to need to deal with a bunch of idiots that decide to join the board just to boast about it. It's going to be annoying as hell.

f*** that. They reserve the right to be as obnoxious as they want.

Like Steinbrenner said after game 7 in '04, "Keep the lights on and let them celebrate. They deserve it."

If it came to it, would Yezsir ever consider putting a temporary ban on registration?

EDIT: I understand you can't just stop registration if the Sox are doing poorly, but exactly what you said will happen.
