Theo also announced that Brendan Donnely will undergo Tommy John surgery. He applauded him for keeping it quiet so the rangers couldn't drive the price of Gagne up.

Wow, thats huge......what a professional he was. I was wondering what was up with him and was about to add the fact that he will make the team even stronger when the rosters expand to 40, but it looks like his days in Boston are just about finished since they will probably non-tender him after the season and only gave up Seibel.

He won't see a mound again until the 09 season....wish him all the best though. I wish he was alright, becuase when healthy he had some sick stuff.

The best bullpen in baseball has just gotten better. Something Id like to call the 3-headed monster (name in Greek mythology?)... Okajima for the 7th, Gagne for the 8th, Papelbon for the 9th. This also gives added insurance that Okajima wont be overused by the time September comes around

Cerberus.

It was a dog.

congrats on the trade. gagne and Okajima give you guys the best setup combo in the business. If your starting pitching ever decides to stop throwing batting practice' date=' you'll be odds-on favorites to rep the AL.[/quote']

Thanks for the kind considerations

Im surprised the yankees didnt have a loud trading deadline

EDIT... I didnt notice your bash on the Sox rotation... Im sorry what? Last I checked they have one of the best starting staffs in baseball

Beckett-- potential 20 game winner, sub 4 ERA

Matsuzaka-- 16-20 wins by season's end, sub 4 ERA, 200+ Ks easily

Schilling-- true he's not what he once was, but a 4ish era the rest of the season i would take gladly

Wakefield-- typical Wake fashion, around 15 wins and an innings eater

Lester-- should deliver decent 5th starter #s, not many teams can say they have a good 5th starter

Like the deal if Gagne stays healthy the remainder of the season, and Beltre doesn't become the monster he could be. For now I'll just look forward to seeing guys flail at the change.

This is a deal you like if the Sox win the WS, and are indifferent about/impressed with if they don't.

Beltre's future is too far away, and the Sox have their hands on a whole lot of very young international talent. Michael Almanzar, Che-Hsuan Lin, Oscar Tejada, they are always on the hunt for it...

ummm, OUR starting rotation has been throwing batting practice? who exactly is throwing batting practice in our rotation?

Seriously, can anyone bust out the ROFL Copter on that comment? How about a LOL-acaust? Dice-K and Beckett have been fantastic, wake is wake, and Lester looks like a guy who could come in and be a very good fifth starter. If Schilling comes back right, we could go back to playing .700 ball with our 3 headed beast of a bullpen and our strength in the rotation.

Bullpen on 2004 was key to our success. A solid trio of Embree' date=' Timline and Foulke. Papelbon, Okajima and Gagne are far supieror to that. Well done Theo.[/quote']

That's what I was just thinking. I just went and watched an inning of Gagne against CIN earlier this year at mlb.com. His changeup is better than Foulke's was, AND he was hitting 94 on the gun (I only watched a few minutes). He will be the ultimate high leverage guy to have in that pen. Or choose your matchup between Okajima and Gagne, lefty/righty, historical success, etc.,

They went and added to their strength, which makes their strength a real force. Detroit's pen last year was formidable with Zumaya, Rodney and Jones. This bullpen is as good as the Angel's pen of a few years ago with K-Rod and Percival when you add Timlin and Delcarmen (who can hit 98mph) to the mix.

What the f*** is cervazio talking about with the whole pirates theme? Is this a little league team? At least give the pen a good nickname.

ahhhhh.....thats what the members of the bullpen call themselves. Nobody gave them any nickname.....thats what they choose to call themselves.

Maybe its just me....but if it was DelCarmen plus Pena on the table for Dye I would have done that too.

I don't think it's just you. If it was MDC plus Hansen +Pena it would have been fine by me. Really suspect MR's and a horrid borderline MLB player for 2 months of a bona fide dude who does great down the stretch can play multiple positions and who isn't JD Drew, gives Papi a rest which he clearly needs and real pop off the bench in a pinch. You do it. I'd like to see what they were really asking for, but if it were something close to this..it's asinine not to have pulled the trigger.

I am very surprised that Texas took 2 fringe major leaguers and then a kid who is likely 3-4 yrs away and swings a bat rather than throws a ball. The value you guys gave up is way less than what I thought it would take. Astonishing really.

the report is that Chicago wanted any 2 of the following 3 for Jermaine Dye: Craig Hansen, Justin Masterson or Manny Delcarmen. thats a lot to give up for a rental

The pen is sick and pitching is what wins in Oct. I'm still worried about the bench. Hopefully that will change when rosters expand. But right now I'm thinking Theo choked on the Dye deal.

No, he didn't choke, Kenny Williams just wouldn't bite on the very smart counteroffer of hansen and WMP. Giving up 2 out of Masterson, hansen, and Delcarmen along with WMP is too much.

I've heard it was 2 of 3, but not seen that yet. If in fact it was 2 of 3, that is high. I'm dissappointed he did not have a plan B, unless it is call ups?

Im almost positive that He Hate Me was joking.

you would be right. I'm just praying for a last place finish at this point so we can rip up this stupid buy everyone aat every price mentality and work on what got us those championships, namely developing a core from within, retaining them, and then sign complementary FAs. Instead my team is in the other direction, where we built our core from FAs and got complementary players from within. There are a few exceptions like Wang and Cano, but it pisses me off to no end to see it. Cash is reversing that trend, but its gonna take a while to fix the mistakes of the last 6 years.
