This thread is hereby dedicated to the power house pitcher Josh Beckett.

After a 5.01 ERA last year, Beckett is truely a come back kid with a 7-0 win-loss record, 2.51 ERA, 40Ks, and only 10 walks.

Beckett as of now has Cy Young award written all over him. Let's hope he can continue his undefeated streak and make 8-0 and some more Ks when he pitches again, despite his recent injury.

Beckett has really shown his stuff this season, but let's hope this torn skin doesn't affect him.

GO BECKETT!

He said in his news conference that he doesn't know if he'll miss a start or not, he didn't say anything about the DL. If he goes on the DL, I'll be a little bummed because right now he is blowing away everyone. I really want some more word right now, I'm itching for it because I'm really pulling for Beckett to become the pitcher I thought he was after 2003. He is the kind of guy who can win 20 and keep an ERA under 3. He has the electric Oswalt or Halladay type stuff.

I missed the game, what finger was it that he injured?

Posted

Just the finger needed for his damn curveball.

Well this is exactly what people were predicting. We were going fine but a single injury can bring us down. Beckett is on day-to-day right now but if that finger doesn't heal fast, we've lost our best pitcher for a few games. Most likely a 15 Day DL.

The way the rest of our rotation is pitching, I think we'd be fine without him for a 2 weeks. Lester could probably be back soon enough to make a difference. I just hope that Beckett wont miss more than 1 start. Get well soon Beckett!

I could make a case that Wakefield has, in fact, been our best pitcher.

I beg to differ. I think Lester is a lot further away than most think (I'd expect him to be ready mid to late June), and if Beckett is gone that necessitates putting either Kyle Snyder, Devern Hansack, Kason Gabbard, or David Pauley in the 5th spot in the rotation. That means, along with Tavarez, you now have two pitchers who on most nights will not pitch into the 6th inning.

I think the team should bite the bullet and put Beckett on the DL. I hope the rest of the rotation can pick up the slack for him. Having an 8 game lead makes this move easier, and I prefer to have a healthy Beckett for the summer months.

The Red Sox should not rush either Lester or Beckett.

I say with an 8 game lead, have him miss two starts, just to make sure it is 100% healed. No sense risking this being a season long problem.

The only reason I don't want Beckett to miss his next start (Friday)... is because I'm going to that game, I don't wanna see Hansack pitch against the Braves, I can see him pitch 5 minutes down the street damn it... unless they go with a highly undoubtly 4-man rotation and I get to see Dice-k pitch :D ...

per Boston.com

Its all wait and see but Theo has been meeting with Francona "possibly discussing candidates to start the game. Right now its looking like either long man Kyle Snyder or as mentioned repeatedly Devern Hansack

Id rather see him miss one starts now and be done with it, instead of it being a nagging problem for the whole season.

Hansack isn't an option unless Beckett hits the DL. He was optioned back down on 5/11, and unless he's replacing someone who goes on the DL, he can't come back up for 10 days.

EDIT: My guess is Snyder for the Braves and Gabbard for the Yankees if he misses two starts. Gabbard for the Braves if it's one. Gabbard was pulled last night while throwing well after 64 pitches, so 3 days rest shouldn't be an issue.

I doubt Beckett misses too especially with Rain maybe on Wednsday, we can just keep our rotation on a normal schedule like Josh did make his wednsday start and on the next time through, I think he'll be back in. Apparently, the avulsion is just an annoying thing that can keep him from making a start, but not really DL threatening...

sounds worse than a blister to me, but eh, never had either because I don't have baby skin.

I am surprised Tito hasnt DL'd him already to be honest with you. It isnt like he has never had these problems before. And his problems seem to linger on longer than most people's do. With such a big lead and with the season being so young, you shouldnt take any chances.

thats why i dont think it warrants putting him on the DL, because it would have been done awhile ago if it did. they don't take chances, and we have Lester on the way, gabbard down in AAA if we need an arm.

Gabbard against the yankees is a smart move. Soft tossing lefties own us.

You know Jackson as much as I like and respect you sometimes I think you're full of it and are just trying to sandbag me and the rest of the Red Sox hordes here.

ksushi, Beckett's finger was that other shoe dropping from my vantage point. I remember reading about how the 1946 Red Sox just ran off and hid from everyone in sight that year, winning the AL by 12 games and winning 104. I allowed myself to dream that it might be that kind of year for us THIS year but quickly dissolved that from my mind. I guess I did just in time. This finger crap was bound to kick up again and I hope it is only of a short duration because we already have a black hole in the rotation with Taverez; we might have another one with Snyder if he is the man.

I've heard this rumor flying around:

Option J. Lopez to Pawtucket, call up Gabbard for the start Friday against the Braves.

If Beckett is good to go by Monday, throw him Monday in the Bronx. That gives you Beckett/Schilling/DiceK at Yankee Stadium. To extrapolate further, taking into thought the off day on the 31st, you could theoretically have Beckett/Schilling/DiceK at Fenway again at the start of next month.

Interesting thought, not quite sure how it would work out totally, but we'll have to see.

I still think he gets DL'd.

Is this thing on his finger better or worse than a blister?

I get blisters every so often on my finger tips and just pop 'em and cover them over in super glue. C'mon Beckett use the superglue! Use the superglue...

I dont know if Gabbard is a soft tosser, but Jackson is 100% correct. I think Jamie Moyer has owned us for like the last 10 years. We tend to do terrible against soft tossing lefties AND righties, plus big bonus points for Gabbard being a rookie, we must have the major's worst W-L record against SP we face for the first time in the Joe Torre era.

You can't use superglue, it would doctor the ball.
