I dont think he'll be able to start this Friday. Hansack is most likely the top candidate to take that start against the Braves. Lester is still throwing bullpen sesions as he tries to heal that fore arm strain

You know it fred. We've seen these types of wins pretty consistently from them in the past few years. I told my wife in the 4th inning that this felt like a 'walk off' game. I wasn't right, but it did feel like one of those where, if the flood gates were opened, the Sox would have a good chance.

this was a classic fenway game. The fans certainly came alive when the Sox showed even the slightest amount of life. They were patient at the plate and took advantage of that selectivity, especially Varitek who ripped that single when Ray had lost the zone and had to pump one over early in the count (1-0 I believe). You knew that would be essentially a 2-0 or 3-1 pitch: heater that gets lots of the plate.

EX, if you told your wife that you ought to take a few kuddos because I would bet dollars to donuts that most of us thought the game was a total loss by the eighth inning, especially with the worthless Pineiro in there trying to give the Orioles extra goodies. You know, the other night I was watching "Fever Pitch" as I do once every couple of weeks. There was a scene at Fenway where one of the fans in the choice seats said "THE RED SOX JUST DON'T LOSE GAMES; THEY MAKE IT AN ART FORM." I'm just starting to wonder if we are starting to make the way we are winning games a "new art form."

We've had some pretty damn dramatic wins the past four plus seasons going back to '03; maybe, possibly, hopefully, prayfully, this may turn out to be a new century for the Red Sox.:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Well, it was four and it was the 8th against the Yankees lol. Carry on.

EDIT: Obviously the point remains the same.

Yank, what does stand out is that the Red Sox never started doing this until the 2003 season when they started making some dramatic comebacks and emotionally charged wins. You Yankees were famous for doing what's going on with my team now. I've talked until blue in the face with long time Red Sox fans and they say the same thing. We had been known for some heart wrenching and painful losses but what we did in that game against your boys or what we did today??? Sorry, it just didn't happen very much.

I left the house and heard the 9th inning on the radio. I have a couple of observations.

First, the Red Sox radio announcers were in disbelief that Per"Dumbo" took Guthrie after an error, 91 pitches, and one out in the 9th. I couldn't believe it either. They hadn't touched him. I though that Per"Dumbo" could really regret that move.

Second, I was sure that Cora was going to win the game for us. I understand that many thought Youk was safe at the plate.

Third, after the 3-2 pitch to Lugo, I was so nervous that i changed the station to the Yankee station. At that moment John "the Shill" Sterling was saying that the Red Sox had scored 4 in the bottom of the 9th had the bases loaded with Lugo up and a 3-2 count. I found it amazing that he was up to the second on the Red Sox game and basically announced it in a play by play fashion. I thought the Yankees don't scoreboard watch? I guess their announcers do. lol!!

Finally, Cora remains undefeared... right? I'm loving this stupid guy.

A truly Happy Mothers day!

700 Hitter, believe this---In my 30 years as a baseball coach I never ever took out a pitcher leading by five funs with one out in the last inning and only one runner on base when he hadn't even thrown 90 pitches. Why Perlozzo did that amazes me. Guthrie wasn't tired, he was still throwing great, he still had the Red Sox totally outclassed. All I can say is that this could be a poster for over managing. I have no other idea why he would have done such a thing. Thanks Sam.

Steve Phillips of Baseball Tonight ripped Beckett's game today, saying he lacked control

4 innings, 2 Hits, 2 Runs, 2 Walks, 7 Ks

Eh I'll take those first 4 innings any day from my starter

Come on Riverside, you're smarter than that. When the hell did Phillips every say something that impressed you anyway? The guy is all over the map and way off the subject. He could have spent more time talking about how well Guthrie stopped the Red Sox offense so Beckett couldn't have left with a lead and maybe a win, that is, if he had gone five. No, he focused on the negative and what's ridiculous as you pointed out was that Josh's performance was not that bad to begin with.

Beckett says he ripped the finger on his first pitch to Millar in the 4th. I went back to look at it in the MLB.tv archive and you can see him checking out his finger after every pitch

You know what's funny.

If Beckett only walked two with a f***ing blister. That's some pretty badass s***.

but he didn't, he only injured the finger in the 4th inning

Sweet the Twins are putting the hurt on Detroit 8-3. The Tigers called up this kid named Virgil Vazquez to make a spot start. He only lasted 2.2 innings, putting stress on that bullpen as they head out to Boston after this game ends

Josh Beckett:

"Me and Tim Wakefield looked at each other on the bench in the ninth inning when they took Guthrie out," Beckett said. "We said, 'We're going to win this game.' We both believed it."

Julio Lugo:

"You're always thinking in your backyard, you know," Lugo said. "Bases loaded, last inning ... hitting a grand slam.

"I just want to get a hit," he said. "When I make contact, I just want to beat it out."

"I always liked Boston," said Lugo, who signed a free-agent deal in the offseason. "That's one of the things they're special for. They have a bunch of guys playing together. And that's how you win it. That's how you win championships, that's how you go to the postseason.

"You need 25 guys playing together. And that's what we have here."

amazing, we've only lost 2 series all year. the second one of the season in Texas and that 2-game mini-set against Toronto

Well said Crespo, and that tells me you don't think anymore of Phillips' expertise than I do. Let's just hope that the finger injury isn't too serious. I almost hate to say it because I don't want to jinx anyone but we have an eight game lead. Man, that sure sounds nice.

I know it is still early but is it possible that we just might have a very special team this year? I was still higher than a kite when I got home from my walk and put on the DVD "Reverse the Curse of the Bambino". I just wanted to see my fellow Red Sox fans celebrating and regaling our team in their greatest moment of triumph. Hopefully we here will be able to do just that in the not too distant future.

I think Lugo beat the throw to first even if they don't make the error.

especially after calling Youk out at home

Yea, as I saw it, and now in my book, Cora really had the game tieing hit (should have). He is just increadible. I just can't believe this win. This team is real special. I just hope to the flying spaghetti monster that the injury bug is nice to us this year.

Wouldn't have been a hit.

That's a FC.

Lugo would have been out, BTW.

Youks and Lugo both slid into their respective bases, even though they should not have. They'll get there faster if they run through the bases seeing as there were force plays at each of them.

at school we were watching a twinkies game and punto slid into first head first and i was like wow what an idiot and so literally the whole class turns and starts chewing me out

-"I think the Twins know better than YOU on how to play the game..." - thats what someone said which is another reasons why i hold twins fans in the lowest regards

yea, I dont support the thinking that players and managers cant be criticized for their decisions. I don't know how many of us would have pulled Guthrie yesterday.

And also, the Jays were down 2-0 and John Gibbons pinch hits John McDonald instead of Alex Rios, his best homerun hitter. That, and pulling Marcum after the 6th with 78 pitches when he had a no hitter going

BoSox, that just has to be over-managing and thinking you're in a chess match instead of a baseball game. The llate Gene Mauch was famous for that, a very very smart baseball man. So smart, in fact, that he outsmarted himself in the ALCS in 1986. Remember that?

And that's why so many fans of other teams are a pack of morons when it comes to knowing the finger points in the game. Five will get you ten that if you said that to a pack of Red Sox fans, they would have broken it down and showed why he actually was slowing himself down doing that, not to mention the fact that he was risking serious injury, not to mention, not to mention a bunch of other things the Red Sox fans would have probably brought up. Again, though, Boston fans are the most knowledeable in the country--make no mistake about that.

I... f***ing... love... this... team

2 times already have they come back from a 5-0 deficit. I'll agree I was one who was just dreading to see the end of yesterdays game. No more, even when the Sox are down by 6 or more I'll just sit back and see what they got. If I were asked "What word defines the 2007 Sox? I would answer with resiliency

The word I'd think of was "pitching", but whatever.
