you sure about that?

mussina is toast

pettitte has been pitching like crap for over a month

wang IMO is the only reliable starter

who knows what to expect from hughes

clemens has been on and off

id take my chances with the sox rotation hands down

Here is my point. Our top 2 consists of two very strong pitchers in Wang and Clemens. Both have been pitching very well and are giving us innings. The Beckett-DiceK tandem has been equally impressive. All 4 of these pitchers are needed to take the mound and give the team a chance to win every night. All 4 have been very good at this for this season. The sox duo has been marginally better ERA wise, so they can take a slight edge.

But where the rotation is set apart is the 3-5. Pettitte and Mussina have been pitching poorly of late, that much is true. But both have the track records to consider that they wont just fall off the wagon entirely. AND, both are healthy right now. Hughes is now in the 5 hole.

For you guys, the bottom three is Lester, Gabbard, and Wakefield. The only guy with a solid history is Wakefield. Also, Lester and Gabbard both possess arsenals that at this point are nothing to write home about. They have been effective, no doubt, but they dont possess the arsenal to dominate day in and day out.

Now, the wildcard is Schilling. I am thinking that Schill will come back as the mediocre pitcher he was when he left. If he returns to prime form, then you guys have the edge, no doubt. It is really close right now, but I'll take the track record of our 3/4 and the potential of the "best pitching prospect in the majors" over the knuckleballer and the rookies. But if Schill returns as an ace, then it is yours hands down. Right now it is close, very very close. But the homer in me will take what we have right now.

And the homer in you, the one who trumpets every successfully thrown pitch by a Yankee minor leaguer, isn't paying attention to the rest of what's happening in AAA. Schilling has been phenominal with good velocity. 14 K's in 8 IP, no runs, no walks, sitting at 92-93, yet you think he'll be mediocre?

sitting at 92-93? Um no. Schilling himself said that he isnt sitting 92-93. He is sitting at 90 while topping out at 93. Essentially the same as when he left. His problem was his location in the zone, though. If this "tired arm" phenomenon gets him back on top of the baseball and locating it down, he'll be effective regardless of the velocity.

In terms of thinking he'd be mediocre, well, he had a near no-hitter and then got buttf***ed. He still has the capability to dominate, but at this stage of his career, he also has the capability to suck. And this season, he has seemed to be solid half the time and crappy the other half and I dont expect that to change.

Link on Schilling quoting his velcity?

And, his problems were when he was sitting in the high 80's.

I saw the interview yesterday. He said that he was throwing 90 but the swings were looking like they were 95-96 meaning that his late life is back.

If he's 75% of what he was in '04 it'd be better than anything we could pick up at the deadline.

Tejada has killed the Yanks tonight. Warms my heart.

In short if he pitches well you guys are buttf***ed.

we might be regardless. The fact that you guys are throwing up the Gabbard's Tavarez's, and Lester's of the world (no disrespect to the kid, but he doesnt have much in terms of stuff or location right now) and widening the lead is a very ominous sign.

Gabbard has been pretty good and Lester has given up 6 runs in 13.2 innings. That's not exactly awful.

Gabbard and Lester remind me of Chacon and Small from 2 yrs ago. Neither had great location, neither had great stuff, but both had balls and went for it.

"Past a diving Jeter" may be my most favorite phrase ever.

Well, then you must be pleased quite often from April to October.

Bruney is going to fall back hard.

29 BB in 39.1 IP does not translate into success.

he is falling back with his velocity. When he is throwing mid to high 90s, nobody will touch him, so if he walks a couple it wont matter since nobody can hit him. But after going through the Joe Torre arm removing program he is having trouble sitting above 92 and he is getting lit. When his FB is on, it has very strong late life and sits 95. Right now it is flat and slow. He might be toast.

That's pathetic if 39 innings makes him toast then. There's no way you can pin that on Torre.
