The Sox have just informed Javier Lopez that he has made the Opening Day roster (over Manny Delcarmen), which means the 25 spots are now set. Here’s how it looks:

PITCHERS (12): Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tim Wakefield, Julian Tavarez, Jonathan Papelbon, Hideki Okajima, Jaiver Lopez, J.C. Romero, Joel Pineiro, Brendan Donnelly, Kyle Snyder (Mike Timlin, DL)

CATCHERS (2): Jason Varitek, Doug Mirabelli

INFIELDERS (7): Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Julio Lugo, Mike Lowell, Alex Cora, Eric Hinske

OUTFIELDERS (4): Manny Ramirez, Coco Crisp, J.D. Drew, Wily Mo Pena

hey' date=' can one of you mods change the title to 25th spot. The title is stupid. My bad.[/quote']

wow your yankees just blew it way to go

Why 3 lefties?

the only reason I can think of for having 3 lefties is because, Okajima can pitch to Lefties and Righties, Romero had a good spring and I'm not sure about Lopez but maybe because he pitches side/submarine style and is a lefty specialist...

From the rest of that blog:

Craig Hansen and Manny Delcarman were optioned to Pawtucket today. Catcher Kevin Cash was also sent to Pawtucket and catcher Alberto Castillo was traded to the Orioles for outfielder Cory Keylor. Mike Timlin, Jon Lester, and Matt Clement will start the season on the disabled list.

Did anyone else completely forget that he was a part of our organization? Just me?

Exactly, I was hoping Bryan Corey would fill in Timlin's spot for the first 2 series. But why lopez? The Sox already have a lefty specialist in JC Romero, and thats what Lopez is only good for. Although Lopez doesnt pound the strike zone with great control. Corey wouldve been a better asset in middle relief in my opninion. Honestly how much work will Lopez get?

Probably None, I'm with you on the Bryan Corey thing, didn't he have a good spring? I remember hearing about him pitching really well...

...and neither of the two stud prospects (Hansen and MDC) that we refused to trade for Helton made the Roster.

....because Helton's contract is atrocious.

I read that they held firm on the prospects not the money. THe Red Sox after the fact might have squawked about the money, but that is almost always a damage control BS story. They cried about the $ after they lost out on Abreu, and I had people on these and other boards believing the obviously planted cover story. They had no money for 1 year of Abreua, but they had $105 million for Dice K, a ridiculous 4 year deal for Drew, and a boat load for Lugo. The FO has plenty of money, plus HElton would have come at a steep discount from his current contract. Now we have two bags of s*** in the minors and a first baseman who on his best day can't carry Helton's jock.

Youkilis is only at 1st base out of necessity, I agree that I dont see why the Sox held onto either kid when they had a chance to get Todd Helton. Likely secnario for next season is that Youkilis moves back over to 3rd base, which I would mind he put up a consistent 15 +/- HRs, 75+ RBIs, 100+ Runs, 100 Walks. But who do they get to play 1st base? Todd Helton couldve had them not pondering that for awhile

Helton with his back and knees and 6 years left on that contract shouldn't be an option considered by the Sox front office. I posted earlier (of course I know that I'm posting seriously early in the morning at the moment and I'm just posting the same idea in multipe threads now, and ranting on top of that) other names will be available as the season goes along that will be more valuable in terms of contracts (still bad, but better than Helton's).

Show me a link where Theo balked at giving MDC/Hansen and not the contract.

I'd rather spend $14 mil per on Drew, especially with this market, and than Helton who has been on a massive decline.

If they want a left-handed hitting first baseman I'd prefer they attempt to get Nick Johnson out of Washington, although since he makes a lot less than Helton they'd have to pony up some significant pieces of the young pitching corps.

I read somewhere that Bowden is asking for the moon for guys like Cordero and Johnson.

I like Nick Johnson when he's on the field, but has some injury history. I think it's a broken leg this time and he's out until June.

Nick Johnson is perhaps the most underrated player in baseball. He posted a .900 OPS in RFK, and that's saying something. However you're completely correct on his injury history. Still if they wanted Hansen and Moss or Murphy for Johnson, I do it in a heartbeat. Can you imagine Johnson and Youkilis in the same line up. :harhar:
