I'd be in favor of picking him up...he can still throw hard, and it's not like we have many other options. The more people with opportunities the better, I say...you have a better chance at finding a diamond in the rough if you increase the size of your mine.

I live in SF and follow the Giants as my west-coast team, so let me chime in here for two seconds. (and I mean this in no way as an argument against posters who recall his more effective years and perhaps haven't seen him recently)

If the Sox attempt to roll Armando Benitez out as our closer, much less give up anyone who might have the ability to someday get beyond A+ ball for him, I will douse myself in gasoline and cowshit, light myself on fire, and spend my last minutes on this earth screaming my undying love for Derek Jeter. There would be a ticker-tape parade in this town if Sabean managed to get rid of that worthless pile.

He pitched 20.1 IP away from the windy, spacious confines of AT&T last year. In those innings he managed to blow 6 of 15 SvOs, had opposing hitters bat .291 against him, and gave up 5HRs for a sweet 1.8 HR/9 ratio. His K:BB rate was a steller 16:11 (overall, 31:21).

He sucks.

I agree with this post, however; if we did get him it would be a even toss up between him our Joel Pinero for our closer right now. That speaks volumes of the state of our closing situation right now.

Obviously the Sox aren't going to give up anything/anyone marquee for him...but if we can pick him up for a low level prospect, I don't see a reason why not. Theo's been stingy with prospects in the past, so you know he's not going to give up anyone he legitimately sees a future with to get a guy like Benitez. If the deal gets done, I have faith that Theo will evaluate the situation and deal someone who he doesn't see ever making any kind of a significant impact in the Bigs.

Guys...plain and simple...we don't have the luxury of playing 8 inning games this year like the Angels, Yanks, A's, etc do. We've got to get a plethora of guys who have proven in the past that they have some talent and hope that some of that talent resurfaces. No one is in favor of dealing any of our big prospects to get a lock-down closer...but then again, no one feels like any of our big prospects are ready to be handed the ball in the 9th, either. Well, sometimes gotta give in that situation...

He's probably better than Tavarez. See if San Francisco willing to eat some of the contract and take a gamble. If he sucks, he can get the Rudy Seanez treatment.

Benitez is the best reliever ever, I sure hope the Sox don't get him! He would completely own the Yanks. Definetely the key to a Championship.

Word. We'll trade you Benitez for Pavano. Hell you can have the rest of our bullpen too. I don't think it'll matter much.

Send Kyle Snyder for him, he will probably not make the team out of camp and is out of options. I mean do this if hes not going to make the club instead of putting him on waivers and getting nothing. Maybe he will make a servicable RP tho. I'd be up for sending Abe Alvarez for him too.

If you get anyone who makes a major league roster for s***** Snyder, you should be lucky. Benitez has some value if he shows he can throw high 90s again. I dont expect the giants to just mail him to Boston in an express package.

Yeah, but Benitez hasn't thrown mid 90s since 2004ish.

I don't want him, but Kyle Snyder or Abe Alvarez should get it done.

This is really much ado about nothing, IMO. It says they inquired about him, but it doesn't say what the inquiry was. With somebody like Benitez, it was probably something along the lines of, "Hey Sabean, does he really suck as badly as we think he does?"

They could have Kyle Snyder and/or David Pauley.

mighty generous of you

kick in a 12 pack of old milwaukee and a can of skoal mint and i dont see how they dont do the deal

I am not really being that generous, because Snyder and I think Pauley will have to pass through waivers if they don't make the 25 man roster and they will likely be claimed.

how did we get snyder??

if kc waived him wouldnt every team behind boston last summer be in the hunt??

is he that bad where tampa baltimore and others passed on him??

i kind of liked his 12-6 curve ball but i havent swung a bat at a baseball in anger in quite some time

so what the f*** do i know...

i do know we're 2 weeks from starting the season with a 200M payroll and no closer
