David Murphy had a very good carreer at Baylor and became Theo's first amatteur pick in the 2003 June's draft. Murphy a RF in College was signed as a Cf.

Murphy doesn't have the plus tools of a top Cf prospect, speed and range, but he has an above average arm for a Cf, gets good jumps on balls and positioned himself well. As a hitter Murphy hasn't change much since his days at Baylor. In 3 plus years Murphy hasn't being able to gain the strenght not only to be a HR hitter but to be a top hitter, in at lot of bats Murphy shows the lack of strenght to handle the pitches.

In 2007 Murphy chances to stick with Boston isn't not better than as a fifth OF and unless the Sox trades a OF at the ML level his playing chances are very slim. Because having a young player sitting on a ML bench isn't a good idea the Sox brass would have to make a desicion on Murphy.

1- Keep Murphy as the 5th OF

2- Send Murphy to Pawtucket to play LF (Ellsbury will play CF and Moss RF)

3- Which is my choice, its well known that Marlins have a need in Cf and have been scouting Murphy for some time. The Marlins have a lot of pitching depth in the minors and if the Sox can get a middle level starting pitcher prospect, one who could perhaps starts the season at Portland, they need to make the deal.

i dont see murphy as someone who can help the sox win a world series, i more see him as a guy filling in when we have no chance. id say trade him. we have too may others ahead of him in line anyway [pena, ellsbury]

Murphy is as good as gone. To where is a question. I've heard Florida and Texas have been interested. But at age 25, I'm not sure how big of a prospect we'd get back.

David Murphy is likely to find a 4th OFer spot somewhere. Boston should hang onto him as a 4th as he can play D, can run a bit, and has a potential to be an ok hitter. No reason to deal him away for nothing.

it would make sense to trade him especially to a team, like the marlins, who have a lot of prospects... hey maybe we should try and get Sanchez back haha..... but really, I don't see Murphy playing in Boston especially with Wily Mo and Ellsbury on their way to the everyday roster...

I dont think anyone views him as a viable everyday option' date=' so your return will be minimal at best.[/quote']

David Murphy loses points for being old in my book, but I put together a statistical comparison of Murphy and a second player (who gains points because he's younger)

Average career OPS

Murphy: 745

Mystery: 760

The past two years:

Murphy: .775 ( AA, AAA, MLB )

Mystery: .757 ( AA, AAA, MLB )

Now, the mystery player in question earns points for spending more time in the big leagues than Murphy, especially at a lower age, but these two players aren't all that different. In fact, my mystery man's already been dubbed a corner outfielder while Murphy has the range and defensive skills to man center.

I'll agree with you on one point: Murphy doesn't look to me like an everyday player, but in my book he's every bit as valuable on the trade market as the man behind door # 2.

I don't think I have to tell you who the mystery man is.

the "mystery man" has had a solid season in the major leagues. David Murphy has had a cup of coffee in the bigs.

Like I've said, one mediocre season in the big leagues doesn't prove anything.

My point is not that Melky Cabrera is better or worse than Dave Murphy. My point is that they're both 4th outfiielders and should be valued as such.

There is a big difference is spending most of the season in the majors and most of the season in AAA. David Murphy is a decent hitter and an adequate defensive player. Melky I think can be viewed as a decent and improving hitter with plus defensive skills.

Plus, Melky is 3 years younger. Murphy is fine as a 4th or 5th outfielder, but if value can be had for him in prospects, it should be taken.

Unless Murphy is traded before Spring Training or has a blow out pre-season down in Fort Myers, David has little future in Boston. When they brought him up last summer he over-achieved and did fine, especially against the Yankees, but was soon relegated back to the bench where he even was at the tail end of the season when he could have been getting some valuable experience in the lineup. For that reason I think the Sox have little interest in him and do not portray him as a regular on our team.

we all agree he's not going to be a star' date=' so if they could get a couple good arms i'd pull the trigger on that.[/quote']

A couple?

They'll struggle to get one good arm for Murphy.
