Wow if this holds true' date=' this is an absolute STEAL! All you Theo haters out there better bow down![/quote']

No. I don't hate Theo, but he's not God by any means. He killed our season last year by not doing anything to help the team at the deadline. Now he's trying to make up for it. I want some consistency.

As much as I hate Theo. The team was doing great up until the deadline. There was no urgency to make a deal. It's the teams fault.

Holy crap does your avatar suck. Not the message, but the format. Use the auto-shape tools. It reminds me of thebestpageintheuniverse.net. F.

This makes no sense. No offense intended, it just doesn't make any sense. Are you referring to the 2006 season?

To put the Matsuzaka deal in perspective: even including the posting fee, we're paying him $11 Mil more (total) than what Houston gave Carlos Lee. And I'm betting we're all comfortable that he'll be significantly better than Carlos Lee.

The Zito signing will be very interesting.

I thought you would get him, and you go him for less than I thought you would. Congrats Sox fans. Have your day in the sun, and enjoy it. I will not rain on your parade. Your office came through, defied what most people thought needed to be done, and signed the consensus best pitcher on the market for pretty much market value in today's market.

Good job.

See you in the ALCS.

The bottom line is that 103 million dollars is an incredible amount of money to be invested in someone who has never thrown a pitch in an MLB game and he better be one hell of a pitcher. I will not accept anything but greatness from this guy.

Yeah' date=' 6 years 52 mill is a steal, sounds like D-Mat stood up to Boras or Boras flinched[/quote']

That's what I'm thinking. Matsuzaka probably saw his chances of being in the majors next year being hurt by Boras and told him to just get a deal done.

Interesting point from a briefing on the E.A and Pacific Affairs Six-Party Talks, strangely enough: http://www.state.gov/p/eap/rls/rm/77794.htm

Clip:

QUESTION: Chris, on the Matsuzaka issue, not confirmed but it does appear that a deal has been struck; Matsuzaka stepped in and made the deal happen.

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: He stepped in.

QUESTION: It appears.

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: And was John Henry there as well?

QUESTION: Larry Luchino and Epstein and Boras and Matsuzaka.

ASSISTANT SECRETARY HILL: This is a terrific Christmas present. Thank you very much. (Laughter.)

what's up with his yellow tooth? we paid 51 million for this???

The first rule of Yellow Tooth Club is..... you don't talk about Yellow Tooth Club.

I think it's being ignorant to look at it like the Sox are spending $103 million for a player because essentially, they're paying $103 million for a player AND access to new revenue streams. This isn't like paying your typical free agent pitcher with similar potential and attributes
Posted
the whole access to revenue streams is a garbage proposal. That money will hit the revenue sharing bit and be split 30 ways.

Bitter much? Matsui brings in revenue for the Yankees but I'm sure Matsuzaka won't bring any revenue in right?

There are certain revenue streams that are shared (merchandise) but there are others like selling the rights to broadcast Sox games that aren't.

Also $17M per year (including posting fee) isn't too bad in this market. Zito will sign for right around that much per year and I would much rather have Matsuzaka than Zito.

exactly, there are tons of revenue streams available that cant be touched by revenue-sharing

hell, have NESN follow Dice-K around for a year and call it a reality show and sell the f***er to Japan

Bitter much. Absolutely, I admit it. I went to bed last night feeling all warm and fuzzy that Matsu was going back to Japan. Today I get smacked back to reality. Score one for the sox, AND the rivalry. This is gonna be one hell of a yr.

Pettitte too. Mark him down for $22.4M next year.

I mean, if the posting fee goes into Matsuzaka's salary, then Pettitte's $6.4M luxury tax hit should go into his.

i cannot wait for next season to start.. i swear.. i hope we make no mistakes, we have 6 SP [pap, beck, schill, dice-k, wake, lester] and illl be pissed if we trade anyone one of them away [shades of last year]

Bingo, and Boras used him as an example of taxes while talking about the posting system. Altogether Pettitte will end up costing New York $46 million over 2 years

I have to say, we may have made ourselves look extravagant with the spending for "Dice-K," Drew and Lugo, but so far this has been a successful offseason. I think we have improved our team more than the Yankees have improved theirs. The Blue Jays have not gotten all that much better. All we need is a closer
Posted

you have improved your team more than the yankees have. Unfortunately for you, there was a VERY large difference between the 2 teams. You needed a SP - check. You needed a RFer I guess - check. You needed a SS - check. You need an entire bullpen - still in progress.

The Yankees needed to deal sheff - check. Deal Wright - check. Add a top line SP - check. Didnt really need Igawa, but - check. Improve the farm - check. Now they need a first baseman - pending.

Good point ORS. Good point. The Yankees paid 22.4m for Pettitte? ha ha ha ha
