Just in case some of you don't see my post in the other thread .... here:

Report: Red Sox, Matsuzaka agree to deal

SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Red Sox and Daisuke Matszuaka have agreed to terms on a six-year, $52 million contract.

Did someone call him from the plane? According to Heyman, the deal contains escalator clauses that could bring it up to $60 million. Dec. 13 - 2:36 pm et

If this is indeed true, that was a steal. Nice job, guys. Seems like, from the report, that they were able to get Boras to accept incentives in the deal. This is about 8.66 million/year. I can't believe that Boras would settle for that in guaranteed money. I'm ecstatic that we were able to get him for less than 15 million, because I was ready to dish out that much. Boras lowering his guaranteed money demands by almost 7 million? Unheard of.

In this day and age, this market, we are able to lock up for D-Mat for 6 years/$52 million... f***ing incredible

Haha Royals have Meche for 5 years/$55 million. We have D-Mat for 1 more year and less cost of $3 million

Im ecstatic right now and cant wait to get this season started!! Already got my tix for opening day which should be his Fenway Park debut... Facing Seattle... 1st pitch is to Ichiro Suzuki

whoa whoa whoa. Great deal, but dont start pissing on the royals just yet. They didnt have to spend 51 mil on meche to speak to him. This is no bargain overall, so leave it at that. But as for what the player is getting, it is a good deal, a great one actually

yes let's forget about the $51m posting fee.

You guys are just looking for any reason to stop our celebrating. The point is, we defied the market. Matsuzaka, in this market, should have gotten at least 12-13 million/year. We got him at a BARGAIN when you look at it.

Or, you could look at it this way when you include the total amount spent on Matsuzaka (with posting fee):

Meche is making about half as much as Matsuzaka. If Meche were to pitch in Boston, he'd be the number 5.

You paid over $17 million for him, it isn't exactly a bargain. It falls right in line with the rest of the market.

However, I told all of you that a deal was getting done no matter what. Don't act so surprised.

This deal isn't a steal. It's what you should expect to come out of the posting process. The agent has one arrow in his quiver. The clock, and we see how far it got the best agent in the game. That said, it is a good deal if he performs to his hype. They'll have a very good pitcher for 6 years at well below market rate for the talent.

Actually the majority of us were banking on a last minute Boras signing

The f*** I care about the posting fee if it doesnt factor into the payroll. It came out of Henry's pockets' date=' god I am crying now. If thats the best argument to try to rain on Sox fan's parade today...[/quote']

I wasn't trying to rain on anyone's parade, just pointing out to the poster that it cost the Red Sox more than what he said.

I was also under the impression that John Henry's pockets were somewhat affected by the Red Sox payroll and vice versa.

I actually think it's a great deal considering what Boras was asking for earlier. I've also posted before that I thought 9 or 10 mil a year was a fair price for Matsu. I just don't think it should be overlooked that $51m is still $51m.

Congrats to the Red Sox for getting a great deal, now I hope he sucks it up for the next 6 years (but not because of injury).

Question about semantics, I know that Fenway is kinda crowded for media coverage already. I've also seen the Japanese media contingent in Hideki's first year, scary.

What's the question? Where do they fit? Haha, I was wondering the same thing.

Henry was just on WEEI denying the deal but obviously no Red Sox official will confirm the deal until the physical has taken place

yeah, Hideki had like 20 guys follwoing him for a while. With the pub around Matsu, I think it will be an even bigger contingent. Maybe time to hold all press conferences on the field.
