Wow. Are these guys stupid? I would shed 1-2 mil off my contract to play for the Sox rather than the Royals' date=' without a doubt.[/quote']

You must have a lot of money then.

the question is' date=' why should he be the one taking the hit? The sox have the money and now they are getting outbid by the f***ing royals yet spend 14 mil a yr on J. DL. Drew.[/quote']Dotel sucked as a closer when he was healthy. The Sox were not going to give him the closer's job. He was a red herring to get Gagne to negotiate. Now, they'll have to try something else to get Gagne.

BTW Th e Yankees made him an offer to setup Mo, so the Yanks got outbid by the Red Sox and KC.

They didnt need him. He was AWFUL as a yankee. AWFUL.

Not surprised guys like Meche and Dotel went to K.C seeing as how bad that team is these guys are going to be the star players there. Now the Sox will most likely go 100% full steam to try and sign Gagne.

The Sox have $15 million to spend until they hit the cap, and factor in the Matsuzaka signing... so they should try to outbid for Octavio Dotel? Besides as others have mentioned, Id rather see that money go to Gagne

Dotel proved he was healthy last yr. Gagne has not. In Dotel, you will get a guy whose command was awful after his return, but at least he returned. Gagne is still not cleared to throw a pitch at full strength.

Somehow I doubt this was about the money being offered for 2007.

In Boston, where success is so important that if Dotel struggled out of the gate he may lose his job. This deal is about Octavio getting a chance to be a closer all season and hopefully get bigtime money after proving he's healthy.

He had Tommy John in 2005 which would mean that he wasn't at full strength last season. It typically takes a year and a half for pitchers to fully recover, which would put him pretty much at full strength to start 2007. That having been said, my guess is that the Red Sox didn't guarantee him the closer's job (and why should they, he hasn't exactly excelled in that role) and he took the sure thing.

Why did they make him an offer?

they set a price at which they thought he was attractive...the Royals bid more...so he goes to the Royals and now the Sox will look elsewhere.

Seems pretty straightforward to me.

I don't know so many of the people here wanted Dotel in the first place. The guy is a volcano ready to blow at any time, and if memory serves me right he stunk to high heaven when he was a closer for the A's. We can do better than Dotel. Then, again, I have heard that Gagne may go to Texas or Cleveland. I still think a trade for Cordero would be our best bet. We now have the chips to make such a trade. Drew's signing has made Pena expendable and the signing of Kiwajima (sic) might make Delcarmen or Gabbard expendable as well. One thing the Red Sox must never never do again is go with this bullpen by committe ******** that they tried in 2003. It cost us the AL East that year.

wimp, delcarmen, and gabbard do not have much value right now. They will not net a solid young closer.

What do you think it would take to get Cordero? I know you're a Yankee fan but give me your perspective. I think Pena if given a full chance with a team willing to put up with his fielding disasters and strikeouts could become a 30 homer man, even though he really should be a DH for an AL team. The Red Sox are running out of closer ooptions if Gagne as expected takes the money and leaves his brain in the locker. I just don't think we are going to hit paydirt in our own clubhouse suddenly with a new Papelbon. In this I think we had better act as soon as the Matsu signing takes place.

It would take WMP and at least 2 of the B's to get him.
