Dodgers: 'Longest of long shots'

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Understand this about the winter meetings: Things can turn around in a hurry. But according to someone who was there, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti told his people this morning that a deal with the Red Sox for Manny Ramirez was "the longest of long shots.''

One Dodger official rated the chances of a deal "at 5 percent ... at best.'' The Dodgers don't want to give up the kind of prospects the Sox are seeking, especially Jonathan Broxton, the 22-year-old who they project to close for them one day.

So where does that leave the Sox? The Giants and Angels keep getting mentioned as possible matches.

Walking to class today, i had this thought. Astros are known to be looking for #2 starter...

Dodgers Get:

Manny Ramirez

Morgan Ensberg

Dan Wheeler

Sox Get:

Rafael Furcal

Jonathan Broxton

Loney/Laroche/Kemp

Astros Get:

Brad Penny

I'm sorry that this is purely speculation, but i still think a three way trade like this has a strong possiblility of occurring, as there are so many holes that teams have this year. It seems like there are surpluses at some positions for some teams, they just havent matched up one on one yet

Is this enough for the Stros? and who'd play SS for the Dodgers?

btw, that is a pathetic deal. First of all, Furcal would be a veteran being traded during a ling term deal, which means he could opt out of his contract or demand a trade after one season. And at 13mil, he could potentially get more especially if he wanted to go back to the cubs who are apparently flush with cash. Second of all, if the dodgers really wanted to do that, do you think they would have let the Lugo negotiations go for this long without making an attempt to sign him? Also, Wheeler may be their closer for all intents and purposes, so why would they want to move him and Ensberg (especially since their problem was with offense) for a broken down pitcher who was left out of the postseason rotation. Plus, the sox would be getting the steal of the deal, all three dodgers players a young starting SS, a hard throwing rookie closer, and a top prospect. The sox would love this deal, but it wont be happening any time soon.

new news out of the winter meetings. With the dodgers dwindling, the sox seem to be abiding by Manny's list of 13 teams. The next on the list is the Mariners who have Putz, Rafael Soriano and two solid prospects in Adam Jones and Clement.

I know it's very unlikely, but how awesome would it be if we could somehow acquire Felix Hernandez in a Manny deal. Rotation for years to come:

1. Hernandez

2. Matsuzaka

3. Papelbon

4. Beckett

5. Lester

The Mariner's one real strength last season was their bullpen. The rest of their team was pretty much garbage as a unit. I can't really see them giving the Sox the two best pieces of their best unit, plus two of their best positional prospects (they are so high on Yuniesky here, it's out of control) for Manny.

Any trade with the Dodgers has GOT to include Andy LaRoche. He is a third baseman with power and we will need one in a year or two. He has about one-half season of AAA ball before he is ready, and we should not be willing to take Wilson Betemit instead because that guy can't play defense worth a damn, is lazy and can't hit lefthand pitching. We need LaRoche, Loney and Beimel. They will not trade Broxton or Kemp.

giants and angels talked to Boston about manny

The Angels, who seriously considered dealing for Manny last winter, are scheduled to meet with the Sox tonight, but their understanding is that the Sox want either closer Francisco Rodriguez or Scot Shields. Rodriguez isn't going anywhere, and the Angels have consistently maintained they have little interest in moving Shields, either. Sox also asked about SS Orlando Cabrera, and the Angels' prized two young starters, Ervin Santana and Jered Weaver. Make the Angels a longshot in this one. The Giants also had a meeting scheduled with the Sox, and according to the lobby buzz, they wonder how serious the Sox are in wanting to move him. The rumor sweeping the lobby is that the Washington Nats might be part of a three-way with the Sox and Giants, offering closer Chad Cordero as part of the deal, with a pitcher like Noah Lowry headed toward D.C. Seattle also appears to be in the picture--they have two top bullpen arms in closer JJ Putz and setup man Rafael Soriano, who has closer stuff.

This and that: Terry Francona and new pitching coach John Farrell met today with Florida residents Mike Timlin and Tim Wakefield. Club blames Timlin's subpar performance last season on a weak shoulder, which they link to the WBC. GM Theo Epstein said Timlin is on a new strengthening program that has proven beneficial and talks of Timlin returning in his 8th-inning role.

J.D. Drew evidently remains in a holding pattern. Theo sez he wants to sift through all the trade proposals for Manny by Wednesday midnight--that's a SOFT deadline--then turn his attentions elsewhere.

i find that deadline a little interesting

I wonder if the Mariners/Sox would do Manny/Youks for Putz/Sexson/Morse/Ichiro (would Ichiro come here to be with the other two japanese guys?)? Putz closes, obviously. I'd probably be OK with an outfield of Crisp (and/or WMP)/Drew/Ichiro, Sexson's bat protects Papi, and the Sox could see if they catch lightning with Morse at SS. He was once touted. Ichiro is older, but his fitness is pretty impressive, he hasnt dropped off, and Fenway's short RF porch would suit him at the plate.

On Seattle's end, Jones could play right and Lahair beat the crap out of Tahoma last year, and they save some money and get a decent young player in Youks. So, if Lahair pans out they can move Beltre, or if not, they're set.

Ah, random speculation. Good times.
