2.8 is league average pay right now. Timlin's good for it. I can't believe the guy gets injured and has a crappy half year out of 3 and everybody thinks he's garbage from here on out.

The signing of Timlin if is more than a back up plan isn't a good move. Timlin isn't close to the pitcher that he was in 2004 and if the plan isn't for him to pitch in the eight inning or better isn't a bad move, until the young relievers are ready.

This is fine, if he is not the 8th inning guy anymore, Timlin was so bad in august and September is was unbearable. I wouldnt mind seeing him in a Taverez/seanez role... however since Tito is so damn Loyal he will be out there in the 8th inning which is why I wouldnt sign him.

I'm not too happy with this signing. Bringing Timlin back gives Tito his bullpen binky to go to. His perif's last year sucked and he was clearly cooked last year. Its a good bet Tito will continue to use Timlin in high leverage situations in 2007.

agreed. Timlin is an aging guy whose luck ran out. I can certainly see another Seanez except worse next yr. I wonder how Timlin's albino look would fare in the san diego sun?

He's going to be 41 Opening Day. His BAA was .305.

It's a decent signing. Got him at a price that wasn't too bad. Even though he had a terrible August and September the Sox can still use him outta the pen. Prolly won't see him outta the pen as late into the game though. Plus it's going to be his last year anyways he's most likely gonna retire at the end of the year. I'll glady welcome Timlin back to the Sox for another year.

Neither is Keith Foulke but the Sox still have him.

Seanez has always been a bum. A 41 year old Timlin is better than Seanez at any age.

The bullpen was eradicated by injuries last year. Who else was left in the pen?

This is probably a repeat, but if Timlin is signed on as a middle reliever, I think thats a very good move and would give us some depth. If Theo is counting on Timlin for the 8th inning duties... We'll be sitting here doing exactly what we have been doing again next october...

There is no way that Timlin is their set-up answer. None. He was an easy and convenient way to add depth to the pen. I see him as a 7th inning answer, groundball getter and, hopefully, double-play producer.

Foulkie rebounded very nicely coming back from the DL and was probably the best reliever who wasnt closing games out the last 2 months of the season. Im thinking he could be in line for a comeback year in 07 & reclaim the closer's role

EDIT: Here is the current Sox roster (players locked up for 07) Another EDIT: Give me a break, I just woke up at that time. I only pulled a 12 hour night at work

Catcher- Jason Varitek

1st Base- Kevin Youkilis

DH/1st base- David Ortiz

2nd Base- Dustin Pedroia

3rd Base- Mike Lowell

Left Field- Manny Ramirez

Center Field- Coco Crisp

Right Field- Wily Mo Pena

Utility- Eric Hinske

David Murphy?

Starting Pitchers

Curt Schilling

Josh Beckett

Jonathan Papelbon

Tim Wakefield

Bullpen

Craig Breslow

Craig Hansen (should start season in Triple A)

Manny Delcarmen

Mike Timlin

Foulke? (still has that player option of $3.5 million he can activate)

riverside' date=' ya missed a certain DH, I think.[/quote']

I was looking through that roster and I was like HOLY HELL THIS TEAM SUCKS. And then I remembered that he completely forgot that certain DH, and then the team looked tenfold better

On another note,

I really like Breslow. Is it set in stone that he will be on the MLB roster next season? He's looked more and more like the lefty out of the bullpen that we need and he looks promising. Whenever he was given the chance, he was absolutely dealing. I'm excited to see what he can do given more opportunity. Any word on his situation in '07?

Here is what Timlin's contract consists of.

Under the terms of Mike Timlin's new contract with the Red Sox, he will receive $150,000 if he is traded. Additional details of his deal, according to information obtained by the Globe's Nick Cafardo: Base salary: $2.8 million. $125,000 bonus for 39 games; $125,000 for 50 games; $125,000 for 60 games; $125,000 for 70 games. $75,000 for 25 games finished; $100,000 for 35 games finished; $100,000 for 40 games finished; $100,000 for 45 games finished; $250,000 for 50 games finished; $250,000 for 55 games finished (maximum of $1.35 million). Other bonuses: $50,000 for All-Star selection; $50,000 for MVP of LCS; $100,000 for World Series MVP; $50,000 for Gold Glove; $100,000 for MVP ($50,000, second; $25,000, third); $150,000 for Cy Young ($100,000, second; $75,000, third); $150,000 for Rolaids Relief Man of the Year ($100,000, second; $75,000, third; $50,000, fourth or fifth).

Under the terms of Mike Timlin's new contract with the Red Sox, he will receive:

$150,000 if he is traded. - Possible

Base salary: $2.8 million. - OK

$125,000 bonus for 39 games; $125,000 for 50 games; $125,000 for 60 games; $125,000 for 70 games. 500k at most.

$75,000 for 25 games finished - possible

$100,000 for 35 games finished - not happening;

$100,000 for 40 games finished; -nope.

$100,000 for 45 games finished; -nooooooope.

$250,000 for 50 games finished; - are you kidding? Never gonna happen

$250,000 for 55 games finished (maximum of $1.35 million). - If Timlin finishes 55 games ate 41 years old, he should earn $100,000,000,000,000.00

Other bonuses: $50,000 for All-Star selection; - possible

$50,000 for MVP of LCS - possible

$50,000 for MVP of WS - possible - though I will say that if this happens he should recieve another $100,000,000,000,000.00

$50,000 for Gold Glove; - not happening

$100,000 for MVP ($50,000, second; $25,000, third) - I like coke

$150,000 for Cy Young ($100,000, second; $75,000, third) - and crack;

$150,000 for Rolaids Relief Man of the Year ($100,000, second; $75,000, third; $50,000, fourth or fifth). - doubt it.

So the Sox would owe him salary plus 150k if he's dealt.

If he gets into 70 games, finishes 25 games, makes the All Star team, wins MVP of the LCS and the MVP of the World Series AND wins the Rolaids Relief Man award, he'll make 3.5 million total this year.

Good deal

Good post.

why did they have to incentivize his deal at all? Was he thinking that 2.8 million was low? He needed convincing to come back?

I wouldn't be surprised if he's embarrassed to go back out there next year. After calling out his teammates in the papers this past season and then proceeding to suck, he probably needed some convincing.

Besides, maybe the Sox know he's losing it and if they have incentives looming over his head, he'll actually pitch better? I don't know. The point is, this money won't be wasted if Tito uses him correctly. If he's another 8 inning set up man I'm going to be pulling my hair out of head and bitching consistently about how he's being misused and how the money is being wasted.
