His career is pretty much in jeopardy. This is exactly what the red sox have feared and its only 2 years into a 4 yr deal.

An actual good call by Theo of letting this former Sox star go. Pedro ended his Sox career helping them win their first World Series in 86 years, thats how we would want to remember finishing his tenure with the Red Sox.

And we saved ourselves 56 million in the process. I know we have matt clement's dead money but essentially both pitchers are in the same boat except clement is at less money and with one less year.

$52 million for Pedro. $24 million for Clement. Saved $28 million wasted $21 million on Renteria. Net savings $7 million. Less $1 million wasted on Jason Johnson ( a total loss). Net saving $6 million. While he made a good decision on Pedro, he did n't spend the money wisely. He basically flushed it down the toilet.

I got your point. However, it's somewhat of a crap shoot when acquiring players. Some work out, some don't. Part of this is due to "immediate need", cost, impact in future terms ( both dollars and prospects ), the lisy goes on. What if we resigned Nomar ? Damon is a wreck waiting to happen. Hind sight is always a winning proposition, especially when selectively applied. Just taking selective deals and gross numbers doesn't cut it. You have to look at the circumstances at the time and the impact to the big picture.

So my point is, you're mixing : different years, different contracts ( lenght/terms ), different positions, other deals, etc. I do however agree that some of the moves ( or lack thereof ) have been questionable.

It was long rumored that Pedro had some damage in his shoulder. But even so, I recall that Theo was willing to give him 3 years, but not 4. Watching Pedro pitch this season it was very obvious he was hurting, he was tossing side arm in his last start. He did throw well last year and no doubt could have helped the Sox make up the one game they lost the division title. His rehab will not be easy, and while he may try to come back it looks like the end of his career. It's sad, but I'll remember sitting at Busch Stadium and watching him finally shining on a World Series stage in a Red Sox uniform.

It was about the same when we had Pedro. That money $17 million in his last year has not been re-deployed in an effective manner. The proof is in the results over the last two years. Last year they had no bullpen and got knocked out in the first round. This year they have been out of the race since mid-August. The budget has been the same or higher. The results have been worse. No money has been saved and the team has gotten worse, so there should be no pats on the back for the FO.

Yet the Yankee ballwashing writer in the New Haven Register still says the signing was a good one by the Mets because he put a face on the team.

Anything NOT to admit that the Sox might have made a good FO move not re-signing Petey.

in fairness to theo(which rarely i am)

clement ended up being our #1 in 05 and was an allstar who lost a s*** load of games courtesy of the bullpen...the deal looked great at the time.....

From today's Herald

Pedro progressing

The word from associates close to Mets starter Pedro Martinez is that the three-time Cy Young Award winner is ahead of schedule in his rehab from rotator cuff surgery, and that he could return to action ahead of schedule, meaning before the All-Star break next season. Former Red Sox doctor Bill Morgan and Mets doctor Richard Altchek used an innovative technique during the surgery in which they reattached portions of Martinez’ shoulder in such a way that he would not lose flexibility, allowing him to retain full range of motion once his recovery is complete. His velocity should also improve upon the mid- to high-80s fastball he was throwing last summer. Although the surgical technique may not have been available five years ago, this procedure repaired the same tear in the rotator cuff that Martinez developed in the middle of the 2001 season with the Red Sox. Martinez, fearing that the operation would turn out as disastrous to his career as it proved for his brother Ramon, opted for rest and rehab instead.

It was a good move for BOTH teams. Pedro did put a face on the Mets, both Delgado and Beltran said they may not have signed if Pedro hadn't been there. Good move by the Red Sox for not paying for damaged goods.

If Pedro comes back healthy, which I believe, it turns out to be a great deal for the Mets.

I thought Delgado was traded for?

He was.

I think it's reasonable for one to expect our source of "Enlightenment" to know that.
