It looks like the Sox have been able to add some lacking depth to the 1st base situation by signing Carlos Pena. And he's a LH bat. Talking about it now on NESN.

From the Globe's Extra Bases

Sources have confirmed that the Red Sox have signed first baseman Carlos Pena, who will report to Pawtucket tomorrow. Pena, a Haverhill native and Northeastern graduate, was the Texas Rangers No. 1 draft pick in 1998 and was Detroit's starting first baseman from 2003-2005.

Most recently Pena was playing for the Columbus Clippers, the Yankees Triple-A club. With Columbus, Pena was hitting .260 with 19 home runs and 66 RBI.

Can he pitch?

Exactly....................

Not to worry, though...we still have Tavarez.....

This wasn't intended to be some kind of big impact signing. He was released from the Yankees organization and only signed to a minor league contract. He probably won't even be called up until September.

No, fox and nesn kept making clips of him being a boston boy or something like that when the A's put him up for grabs. He went to the tigers instead.

27 homers and 82 RBI in 142 games in 2004. His numbers dipped last year, but I think he has more potential than Choi.

His walk to strikeout ratio is bit nasty though. He likes to swing.

Boston native. Northeastern supposedly.

Why waive Snow and bring on Pena?

Early on with the emergence of Youk, Snow’s playing time was diminished and he was unhappy. He wanted to get moved or traded. When he was DFA’d it left a hole in the organizational depth that wasn’t filled with Choi’s lackluster year. Up until now there hasn’t been a legitimate call up from the minors to spell Youk.

Supposedly? If McPhee heard that....<_>

Off topic but..

Are you the poster formerly known as Cocoas Crispies?

If your talking to me, not I'm not. I guess I didn't read the first post completely and thought I was adding the info about NU, I didn't see that it had already been declared.

Honestly, I am somewhat disappointed to be losing him. I wish he was given more of a shot in our organization. Whatever though, it happens.

Good luck to him.
