From the Globe's Extra Bases:

The Boston Globe has learned from team sources that catcher Jason Varitek will have arthroscopic surgery for cartilage damage on the left knee he injured in the second inning of Monday night's game.

According to ESPN Radio Boston, Jason Varitek is going to miss four to six weeks with a left knee injury.

The Boston Glove's Gordon Edes said Varitek will undergo surgery for a cartilage injury in the knee. Doug Mirabelli will fill in for now, but the Red Sox may enter the market for catching help. Javy Lopez and Jason LaRue are among the available catchers likely to clear waivers.

Why can’t Lopez be sent down without having to clear waivers?

They should put Foulke on the 60 day and for now put Huckaby on the roster.

Edit: Nevermind, it was Javy Lopez that was being discussed.

how about trying to trade with the Braves for Jarrad Saltamacchia

After July 31st, the only players you can trade for is those who have been placed on waivers. Besides in a tight pennant race, we need a proven major league catcher to hold the reins until Varitek comes back from the DL. ESPN is reporting the 2 most likely options are Javy Lopez (yes please) and Mike Lieberthal (one of Tito's former players)

He's a top catching prospect. He'd get snatched up in a heartbeat, forcing the Braves to recall him from waivers.

Do you know how the waiver process works from Aug 1 - Aug 31?

I thought you had to be on the 40-man roster in order to be put through waivers. I think they could trade him without going through waivers. I'm not sure though. The problem would be that the Braves would probably want someone with MLB experience in return.

Jason Varitek pulled up at second base and hopped, tellingly. What happened was that his deceleration led to a small, probably pre-existing tear of his meniscus coming loose and "locking." There are several reasons this happens; the most likely for a catcher in his thirties is that the meniscus wore down over time and a small piece of cartilage was floating inside the knee or hanging by a flap. It moved into a position where it "caught," giving a small resistance to normal movement or pushing against one of the articular surfaces, felt as grinding in the knee. The surgeons will go in with a scope, wash out the knee, remove any free or hanging pieces of cartilage, and slap a bandage on the opening. To call this a minor procedure is overstating it. While no surgery is minor if it's performed on you, this is as minor and easy as surgery ever gets. Varitek should be out about three weeks, reminiscent of Jason LaRue after he had a similar injury just before Opening Day.

Will Carroll over at BP.

yes, I do, but I was just saying it as a possibility

He has the same thing I had with my knee. If he's back in 3 weeks it's a miracle. It should be more like 5-6 weeks. I had surgery 6 weeks ago and I was told that I could start physical therapy THIS WEEK. If 'Tek gets back in 3 weeks that's crazy. I would like it though.

IMO if its anything more than 2 weeks, they have to start searching the waiver wires for better hitting catchers than the duo of Belli & Huckaby. If so, I wouldnt be surprised to see the Sox try to claim O's Javy Lopez. I heard he has asked team to waive him and theyre likely to go through with that very soon

Damn I love it when Im right on target with my predictions

Some encouraging news about Tek. It looks like there’s a possibility that he could return in about a week.

Manager Terry Francona said catcher Jason Varitek may be only a week away from returning from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, which took place Aug. 3. Varitek initially was going to join the team in Seattle today, but the Sox decided it would benefit him more if he remained in Boston.

Yawn...

Who cares... Mr. Overated/Oversigned.....

You arent really buying all this "Tek is the reason that the Sox lost 6 in a row" BS are you?

The fanboyism around here is really off the charts sometimes.

Clearly Doug Mirabelli and Javy Lopez are better options?

When is the last time a Red Sox catcher threw out a player stealing?

Well seeing as how Varitek is on the DL and will be for awhile soon it's been some sad weeks for me not seeing V-Tek playing everyday. I'd like to see the Sox play Corky Miller. Can't be any worse than Javy Lopez has been doing since he's joined the Sox.

Corky Miller is just as much as a joke as a hitter as Lopez is which means he can't hit either.
