Well Kay just mentioned the trade on YES. They're not allowed to do that until it's official. So I presume this has gone official. Anyone know for sure?

Imagine how the Phillies fans are feeling? Abreu has been a marquee fan favorite slugger for them, Lidle has been a decent #5 starter.

In return-- double A shortstop who is just hitting .237, a non-impressive starting pitcher in minors I believe, and of course lots of cash that may or may not help the actual team

I'm a Phillies fan, well was, well maybe, I don't know what I am right now (kind of a mid-life crisis for me in baseball). You could just imagine the pain. We thought things would change with Gillick becoming the GM, but that obviously isn't the case. I wonder what Gillick plans to do with Abreu's $13 million of freed up salary. You can't sign anyone with that these days.

The worse part about this deal is that they threw in Lidle. They could have dangled Lidle until the last minute of the deadline and gotten something better in return. The picks we would have gotten would have been better than what the Yankees gave us.

At least none of you were around for the Ruth trade. We are suffering a much similar pain. I rather Abreu be traded for nothign to the Red Sox, or even the Mets than the Yankees. I can't bare to see him in those terrible pinstripes. This is an all time low to be a Phillies fan.

I'm sorry for your pain.

Wait a second..why would you rather the Sox than the Yankees? The Phillies and Red Sox have a pretty healthy rivalry over the past few years.

Phillies Press Conference:

Gillick: We traded a fan favorite who was last years home run derby champion and a decent pitcher and aquired 4 minor leaguers who will not be MLB Ready for a couple years. But I do have some good news, I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.

That was an awesome post...nice work. Good to have you here.

My thinking is that there just wasn't that much interest in an overpayed, over hyped OBP guy like Abreu and the Phillies just needed to pull the trigger. Add another roided outfielder to the Yankees roster, and remove any respect you may have had for the Yankees after their last 3 months of using in-house replacements for their injured stars. Now, they have done what we figured they would have done months ago by going out and getting an all-star, overpriced RF to replace sheffield.

Moneyball talks about getting guys who are UNDERvalued, preferably if they have a good OBP. It doesn't say paying a huge price to get guys who can only get on base and run a little bit. I know, the yankees didn't pay much in talent, but they'll pay like 7 mill for the rest of this season, right?

this is an indication to me that they will likely not be keeping Sheffield around but, in all honesty, SHeffield scares me MUCH more than Abreu's walks will.

Here comes a shocker: People that aren't Yankee fans pretty much tend to hate the Yankees.

Yeah, but it's extremely irrational to rather have a rival of yours profit than a team that really doesnt affect you at all. The Sox and Phils play every year in Natural Rivalry interlauge play, while we play them in only spring training and in interleauge rotation when the eastern divisions are matched up against each other. It's totally ridiculous. It's like if Bonds went to A's and a Giants fan said "I'd rather him go to the Padres than the A's." It makes no sense.

Come on, man. I don't know why a guy from Philly who hates the Yankees instead of the Red Sox affects you so much.

While we're at it, do people from upstate NY hate the NYC area and their teams? And vice versa.

A Boston/Philly rivalry is a fabrication of MLB and interleague play that apparently you bought into. There is a much more real and intense rivalry between NY and Philly as cities. I'm sure that has something to do with it. But, here's the kicker, the Yankees, Cowboys, Lakers, and Habs are hated by those that don't root for them. Part of it is their success. Part of it is the hype that surrounds them due to their success. Part of it is the fact that their fanbases remind everyone of their success so much. Part of it is the good fortune they tend to get over time with either injury/non-injury, call/non-call, etc., that contributes to their success. It boils down to their success for each an every one of those teams. Some of the hate is jealousy. Some of it stems from annoyance. Some of it just regional. But it is there nonetheless.

You think it is ridiculous for him to not want to see his team help the Yankees vs. the Sox. Got news for you, that doesn't come anywhere near to the ridiculousness of you not getting this about the successful teams in the major sports. Sorry, no Yankee fan by default for you.

As a former Phillie fan, I'd say this trade could work out well for the Yankees or completely blow up in the faces. Abreu was underrated for so long he very quickly become overrated. Despite his production, he's never been a fan favorite as everyone keeps calling him. There's been a noticeable lack of effort on his part the past year or two, he shies away from the media, he refuses to play anywhere in the lineup other than 3. 4, or 5, he's not a good clutch hitter. A lot of that comes from being in a losing clubhouse for so many years, so the change might be just what he needed to revitalize his attitude. On the other side though, the Yankees may find they have their very own Edgar Renteria on their hands.

So the Yanks pay 4 million for this year, and 15 million for next year of Abreu? That's not a great deal, if you ask me. Its like paying market value for Abreu, as if he were a free agent or something. Nothing to fear boys.

You do understand that the Yankees have no salary cap right? Money doesn't matter at all to the Yankees.

Except when he is facing one of our pitchers with runners in scoring position.

Money's not an issue with the Yankees. If you look at what they gave up and what they're getting, you have to admit this is a good deal.

It is a good deal despite the fact its crap. The Yankees continue to be the worst thing in baseball. Feeding off the teams that don't have the same market and money as the Yanks. I mean look at this projected lineup:

1. Johnny Damon

2. Derek Jeter

3. Jason Giambi

4. Alex Rodriguez

5. Bobby Abreu

6. Gary Sheffield

7. Hideki Matsui

8. Jorge Posada

9. Robinson Cano

.....it might be cheaper to just purchase the championship from Major League Baseball.

Their spending is the reason they're on a downward spiral, if they admitt it or not. They overpay for aging players, and then are stuck with them when they can no longer produce. Let them keep spending 200 million a season, and keep losing.

TO me this is no different than someone waking me up this morning and saying "example1, Gary Sheffield has returned to the lineup and will be in the OF starting tuesday". Yes, he is worthy of respect with runners on base. So are most of the rest of the Yankees. Matsui? Yep. Jeter? yep. A-Rod? yep. Giamboid? yep. Posada? yep. Sheffield? yep.

I will keep telling myself this isn't that big a deal. And, in 3 weeks when everyone is saying "looks like that abreu deal wasn't the be all and end all to determine who wins the AL" I will say " that's what I thought, beiatches!"

Anyone who thinking Abreu is going to win the divison for The Yankees is a f***ing moron.

This coming from a guy who roots for a team that robbed the D-Backs blind for Schilling.

This deal has the potential to be a monster improvement for the Yankees. Like it or not, they have been on the Sox ass with Guiel & Williams getting regular time in the OF. Abreu is an upgrade. Period. Maybe it's not a huge upgrade because Guiel has slugged .536 for the Yankees, but he will get on base a shitload more.

Where the deal could be a killer is if Lidle catches the SCE (Shawn Chacon Effect), where a journeyman pitcher stands on his head for a couple of months because Mystique and Aura just gave him a lap dance.

Well, I'm too lazy to go through this, but I'm pissed that the Phillies basically gave these 2 players away. That said, I understand it was a salary dump, but anyone who thinks that Abreu isn't an upgrade over Williams/Guiel in RF is on a different planet. Even if the Yankees gave up Philip Hughes in this deal it wouldn't make me feel any better while watching Abreu drive in runs against us.
