I've learned that the Yankees' latest offer was Eric Duncan and Tyler Clippard, plus one low-minors player. Due to Boston's involvement, this probably isn't the final offer, but we don't know what the Red Sox are offering. If a dam near you ever springs a leak, call Theo Epstein--he's apparently the master at plugging leaks.

So basically the Philadelphia Phillies just gave them to the Yankees. I wonder how much money Pat Gillick got for his own personal pocket.

Imagine how the Phillies fans are feeling? Abreu has been a marquee fan favorite slugger for them, Lidle has been a decent #5 starter.

In return-- double A shortstop who is just hitting .237, a non-impressive starting pitcher in minors I believe, and of course lots of cash that may or may not help the actual team

Usually in a salery dump you dont get much back. It sounds like the pitcher is Matt Smith btw.

If the Yanks somehow get healthy there lineup would be:

1. Johnny Damon CF

2. Derek Jeter SS

3. Jason Giambi 1B

4. Alex Rodriguez 3B

5. Bobby Abreu RF

6. Gary Sheffield DH

7. Hideki Matsui LF

8. Robinson Cano 2B

9. Jorge Posada C

Just to put this is perspective exactly how much money in contracts are the Yankees taking on? For Abreu to waive his NTC I heard that his option year was to be guaranteed.

According to Buster Onley Abreu will not ask that option to be picked up.

Hopefully indeed the Sox were able to drive up the price of those 2 lower tier prospects mentioned before
That will make me feel much better as Abreu is raking our pitching.

Either Matt Smith or Steven White. Can't complain too much. I am a little disappointed about losing Henry, but i'll deal. I am definately pleased about getting Lidle, as I have liked him since his Oakland days, and especially when he was in Toronto. He and Jason Giambi are good friends and were high school teammates, so hopefully that comfort could help to overcome possible difficulties involved in the transition from small-market pitcher to New York pitcher.

If Abreu doesn't want his option picked up, waived his no trade clause, and the Phillies get average prospects for Abreu and Lidle???

.....that doesn't make any sense....someone had to give the Phillies a better offer.

Perhaps, but maybe those other teams arent willing to take all of the salary of Abreu and Lidle.

I expect Sheffield back. Matsui is more hit or miss.

Well we'll learn more about Sheffield tomorrow, as he is going to see the doctor and could get a better idea as to when he can return to action. He has his cast off. As of late it seems that Matsui should make it back mid-late August with Sheffield coming when the rosters expand in September.

Damn, how much did the Yankees secretly give him under the table to say no to picking up his option year?

wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

M. Smith could be really good, and CJ Henrycould be a good player but he is a SS and is stuck behind Jeter

I dont think the deal improves the Yanks all that much

Lidle sucks and Abreu is nothing more than avg at this point. The short porch in Right might help him though

Smith isn't very good. The sole purpose of this trade was a salary dump. The Yankees could afford it.

Abreu will help the Yankees because he gets on base about 40% of the time.

Abreu killed us when we last faced him.

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Phillies will get SS C.J. Henry, LHP Matt Smith, C Jesus Sanchez and RHP Carlos Monasterio from the Yankees for Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle.

Quantity over quality. Pat Gillick may fool some fans by picking up the additional prospects, but he's really getting just a quality shortstop prospect and a lefty specialist in return for a superstar outfielder and a decent starter. Henry, a 2005 first-round pick, hasn't even put up decent results yet. He's hitting .237/.326/.350 in the South Atlantic League.

I agree with a lot of what you said. While I hope this is a big, impact trade, I can see it not turning out that way.

As for Henry, I remember reading last year that the Yankees were hoping to convert him into an outfielder. Maybe take CF after Damon or something. George was pretty angry when he was taken over Hansen.

NOT JESUS SANCHEZ!!!!

...I just realized something. How ironic would it be to have Abreu make his former manager switch numbers so he could wear 53.

The Yankees fleeced the Phillies. The Yankees can sign another CF when Damon shows he can't do it anymore.

BTW, who the f*** is Jesus Sanchez?
