Four teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox, have asked the Tampa Bay Devil Rays about acquiring shortstop Julio Lugo, the Tampa Tribune reports. Lugo is enjoying a career year but he likely won't be rewarded with the five-year, $40 million contract he is seeking. More

I lifted that from Yahoo Sports - MLB,,

Color me confused..:dunno:

In as much he’d be an upgrade offensively, he’d be much more of a downgrade defensively. When the team was constructed at the beginning of the season the emphasis was defense from the SS position. For the amount you’d end up in overpaying to get Lugo for a half season rental and the overall drop in fielding (compared to Seabass) I hope the Sox stay clear of him.

He'd be a huge defensive downgrade.

Theo's probably just trying to up the price for the Blue Jays, hard to believe he's gonna try to get Lugo when Gonzo seems ready to solidify the ss position for years to come

Personally, I don't think Gonzo is ready to solidify the ss position for years to come. He has been a nice addition. A VERY nice addition to this team. But I think the Sox are still pretty sure that that player exists somewhere who is capable of making 98% of the plays while getting on base at a .380 clip. I know its a lot to ask, but I think that's what they're looking for.

As I see it, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Sox. Theo had many concerns (per "Feeding the Monster") that this years team would be WORSE than last years team, which clearly isn't the case. I think he hired some "stop-gap" type players who have overachieved and really filled those gaps nicely (Lowell, Loretta, Gonzo).

I imagine that Theo will, nonetheless, continue forward with his rebuilding/retooling plan. They may sign Gonzo to a longer deal, but I imagine them trading him to another team at some point.

Does anyone have any WARP #'s on Gonzo? That would be useful in a conversation like this one.

He signed a 1 year contract, so trade is not an option

The Red Sox won't do this, since both Schilling and Theo Epstein have publicly praised Gonzalez as the Gold Glover this year and have criticized fans/writers that call for a new SS. Obviously if the GM loves the current SS he won't go get a new one. PLus Lugo isn't all that great offensively.

not so fast there...Theo will do whatever he can to better this team short-term and long-term...even if it means moving someone he really likes.

Did you look that up to verify that claim?

Lugo's OPS is almost 150 points higher then Gonzalez's. Who, by the way is having a "good year" at the plate.

Lugo may be a downgrade defensively, but he won't be that big of a dropoff. Lugo's got good range, and a pretty good arm. Plus, he can steal a bag or two.

I'd go with Gonzalez for the rest of the year, and sign Lugo to a 4 year $28 million contract

He wouldnt settle for that. Ive heard Ken Rosenthal & Gordon Edes both say he's looking for 4 seasons/$40-45 million

I heard 5 X 8. He may want that, but I don't expect him to get it. He'll probably come down to the 8 million dollar range, which is fair for a SS of his quality.

At the risk of sounding redundant...we don't want Lugo

Personally I'm not excited about Lugo. I'd rather the Red Sox keep Alex Gonzalez.

I've seen a lot of shortstops play the game...Alex Gonzalez is one if not the best defensive player I've ever seen. Its a crime this guy has not won a gold glove.

I dont want to give up valuable prospects right now to get Lugo, hes going to be available in the offseason, and he wouldnt help us as much as a good SP/MR would. But in the offseason id be all for signing lugo and have Pedroia play 2B.

Okay...he's all yours!!!....and i thought this was the Red sox room

What the hell does that even mean? s***, a person that calls Yankee Stadium, "Skankee" Stadium is certaintly a Rhodes Scholar.

Anyway, I don't see how you guys can say why adding Lugo would be a bad idea. The guy's a good defensive SS, who has an OPS of .885. That's .150 points higher then Gonzalez's. He may be costly, but Gonzalez is probably going to turn his good year into a long term extenstion. I wouldn't be shocked to see him get three years around six million per.

Lugo is having a career year in OBP, SLU, and AVG while probably setting a career high in HRs. I would think Lugo will be looking to cash in with that too. As far as defense....Lugo is alright.....makes 20+ errors a season with a fielding percentage around .960-.970. Not a bad base stealer but not great. He is also a year older than Alex Gonzalez.

You can pretty much guarantee better defense from Alex Gonzalez (nobody can argue that). He will make less than 20 errors a season and his fielding percentage will be around .980. His batting numbers are ok and most of that is because he plays half his games at Fenway with a good Red Sox lineup. He is a year younger and may come cheaper than Lugo.

I certainly respect what you say and can see your point. I'm going with Gonzalez though.

As much as Ken Rosenthal can sometimes be a homer, he always has the inside track and promptly lets all of us know

In his daily tidbits, he says that this offseason the Red Sox are going to make a strong push for Julio Lugo.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5813252

Doesn't it make sense that the Red Sox are simply increasing the price because the front runner for his services is the Toronto Blue Jays??

What makes people think Ken Rosenthal has the inside track on what is happening?? He knows as much as ESPN analysts...who don't seem to know much either making claims Soriano was deffinitly going to the White Sox

Im just referring to a number of big trades that was heard first from him

About Lugo, he was mentioining the offseason not the upcoming trade deadline. Its not like Im all for getting Lugo because I want Gonzo to become a mainstay in Boston.

This just doesn't make much sense. I think it's tough to compare the two based on range, arm, errors, ect.. There are a lot of things that we have seen gonzo do that are amazing. His instincts, quick hands, ect... far outweigh what we saw (at least me) from Lugo in the times that we have played against him. Lugo's not that much of an upgrade offenseivly, especially the way gonzo has been coming on lately after a terrible start to the year. We are getting much more than we expected out of Gonzo, so why try to move him?

SS is not our problem right now, we have the 2nd best record in the AL (majors mabey, but i have to look that up) behind the tigers--and that's with all the pitching injuries we have had. If we are going to change SS, let's move for O-cab--not the wife beater!
