I saw this on rotoworld.com

A rival GM said the Red Sox have "very strong" interest in acquiring Bobby Abreu, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

I don't understand this at all. Perhaps the Yankees are interested in Abreu and the Red Sox are making an offer to push up the price on the Yanks?? Perhaps the Red Sox are working on a three-way deal?? I find this pretty odd and can't put the pieces together. This rumor will probably get scrapped but I thought I should bring it up for anyone else who has insight for this topic.

This seems like the most likely scenario, because I can't see where we would put him, unless it included Nixon, which wouldn't make much sense. A 3 way deal could happen, but who would be the 3rd team?

The two teams I see who could use another bat in the lineup and who could be in contention...Houston and the Angels. Both teams have some decent pitching too which could help us.

If we include, say, Murphy and Edgar Martinez, or something more, send them to Philly, Angels get Abreu, and we get Santana/Wood or something. That makes sense for us and the Angels, maybe not the Phillies.

They certainly wouldn't trade Ervin Santana and Brandon Wood for Bobby Abreu and David Murphy.

I would say Pedroia's name could come up but with Howie Kendrick and Wood...why would they have interest??

...I'm not sure the rumor has any substance....I don't know how credible Ken Rosenthal is but the only thing I could think of is a three team deal. I can't name the team or players involved.

Very interesting, it could possibly be to drive up the price for the Yankees but a 2007 OF of Abreu, Coco, Manny and a 3-4-5 punch of Ortiz-Manny-Abreu could go a long way.

This one isn't that hard to figure out. It COULD be the Yankees thing, that's true, or it COULD be Abreu's .447 OBP and career .413 OBP numbers. He's an on base machine, another Youkilis with more pop. He would be a good hedged bet on a continued plan to move Manny in the next year or so and reap the benefits, as that would leave an outfield of Abreu, Willy Mo and Crisp with the addition of whomever Manny gets in return to the pitching staff or infield. That lineup would likely have guys like Crisp, Youkilis, Willy Mo, Ortiz and Abreu, along with the standard Theo-type pickups in free agency and from the minors.

I could see the sox making a legitimate push for Abreu if they have offers for Nixon and can make the deal without moving their best prospects. I don't know how realistic that is, but I can see it as a legitimate thing.

It's not for sure or anything

Considering the money involved with Bobby Abreu....I'm not sure he would cost a complete fortune (talent wise). I would guess the Phillies would want financial relief from his contract and of course....the Red Sox can do that. One thing for sure...if they made a move you can guarantee another move would soon follow as they can't have an outfield of Ramirez, Crisp, Pena, Nixon, Abreu, and Kapler.

I still think this is just a move to keep the price up so he stays away from the Yanks.

Well, I would think if there was a deal Nixon would probably be included

um, we already have a thread for this in rumors central, but yeah, it would definitely involve lots of other people, not just Abreu for Trot

Mods want to move this?

I've been hearing the deal would have to involve either Delcarmen or Hansen, and if thats the case then the trade is tragic and doesn't make any sense. Who cares if the Yankees want Abreu? I understand they're in the same division and are Boston's historic rivals, but stop making moves based on what the Yankees desire. I understand Abreu is an on-base machine and is also sporting a .914 OPS so far this year. He certainly would be a good # 5 hitter. It's just that they are starting to develop a nice little bridge to Papelbon with Manny in the 7th and Hansen in the 8th. I don't want to sacrifice the future bullpen.

How long is Abreu's contract? If it expires at the end of the season, him for Nixon and Hansen isn't worth it at all.

VORP: Abreu: 27.8, Nixon: 17.2. Yeah, it is an upgrade, but with Hansen in the mix, and if Abreu is gone after this year, it's a no-no.

im not really sure what to think of this. Sure, Abreu is the better player then Trot, but would it really be worth it? We don't need a stud RF. Instead of working on something that is not a need, Theo should be focusing on upgrading the pitching staff.

As some of you have speculated, maybe we would get Abreu and flip him for some pitching, but I'm not sure how we would get Abreu in the first place without giving up Trot. But even if we did do that and if Wily Mo was ready, we could trade Trot and put Wily Mo in as the starting RF.
